THR Rhiannon89's recovery thread

Could you not follow him as you can be treated at other hospitals than your local one under the NHS? Just a thought.

as my surgeon is leaving I will need to see a new consultant before they can do my left hip
That's such a shame @Rhiannon89 :console2:. I had a similar thing happen just before my R hip revision. However, they did keep me informed as to who would be able to carry out my surgery and the timing of it. I had yet another outpatient appointment to meet my new surgeon and talk things through, but that was really good and put my mind at rest. Unfortunately, surgery was delayed for a while. Would it be possible for you to give your current consultant's secretary a call to discuss your concerns?

I have enjoyed following your thread. You, among others, have given me hope that all will be well. I am sorry you are losing your surgeon and feel.lost in the shuffle. I love my doctor and hope he will be around when my left side needs replacement.

Blessings and peace

@SurreyGirl I hadn't really thought of it as an option but I think I will pop an email over to his secretary now. I always feel like I'm being a nuisance but being left in limbo is such a horrible feeling. I would much rather stick with my surgeon than have to start again, I guess there is no harm in asking!

@SarahBee I hope you are recovering well! It will only get better from now on :)

ETA: Just had an email from the scheduling department again assuring me they are chasing things up so i'll wait a little while longer i think. They were very quick to assure me I wouldn't get lost in the system and that they are being pro active about it which has put my mind at ease.

If you can stick with your surgeon it would be a good thing as you have confidence in him but great that the hospital has got in touch.

We don't have that choice in my part of the UK!
Correction - everyone in the UK has this choice. It's just that many don't know it or are given bad information. Many GPs object to referrals to another area. But it is your choice as a patient to go anywhere and see anyone.

@Rhiannon89 I would urge you to contact the consultant's office and see if you can see him again. Unless he is leaving the medical profession altogether - there is no reason you can't see him in another area.

Thanks, that's interesting @Jaycey. I'm confused now, it's not been my experience and just found this on NHS Direct Wales website -

Patient choice
Whilst a patient may request to be seen in a certain hospital, patients registered with a GP in Wales do not have a statutory right to choose at which hospital they receive treatment. However patients on the border who are registered with a GP in England are entitled to exercise Patient Choice.

It could be different in Wales. My information was based on my experience in England and former work experience within the NHS Choose and Book team.

There was an article in radio 4 just today about the English nhs not accepting welsh patients. I had to check today’s date to make sure it was not April 1.

@Bionic - we are outcasts! We must move to Surrey, then we can join the swanky health club too!! :)
Thanks @SurreyGirl, I'll try to listen on iPlayer. We are very restricted within Wales too. It's my experience that it's only in exceptional circumstances that we are able to have treatment outside our local health board area.

I hadn’t realised until today that Wales had this issue re “free movement amongst the “NHS”.... reminds me of a certain little political issue going on right now ;-)

Haven’t joined the SHC yet but may do this weekend. All the walking up and down the hill-from-hell this week has caused Hermione to swell up so icing and elevating right now. Hope to be a bit better tomorrow.

Have a lovely weekend everyone xx

Yes, I fear it still is, one of the consequences of devolution.
Sorry for de-railing your thread @Rhiannon89 - a Welsh name without the restrictions of the Welsh NHS!
Have a good weekend all.

No problem, it's interesting to see how different things are!

I was named after the Fleetwood Mac song rather than being Welsh, I feel thankful for living in London now!

I think the issue not accepting any Welsh patients was one particular hospital or health authority. The problem is that the hospital is being given Welsh money.
One benefit of the Welsh NHS is that we don't pay any prescription charges. So, as you get older that's a bonus.

Hi @Rhiannon89
I don't know a lot about the NHS but I understand your disappointment to a certain extent. So offering my sympathy. My OS baled, unannounced from the large practice he was a part of. Didn't even make it to my first anniversary appt with him which was a bit distressing. I can only imagine how you must feel since you liked yours and planned to have him perform the replacement of your left hip soon. I hope it all works out for you.

Was going to ask you if you were named after the song. Thanks for sharing.
Hope you have a nice weekend!

Hoping it all works out for you with your surgeon. So sweet that your horse understands that he needs to be easy with you. I’m sure smelling him and touching him felt amazing. Prayers for peace and answers soon for your other hip. Take care. ❤️

I hope you get news on your 2nd hip soon! I had to re-learn walking about 4 years ago and benefited greatly by pool walking. I used a pool noodle to keep my posture good and painted my toenails a bright colour so I could watch my feet from 5 feet up. (My husband thought they were bright pink so he could find me in a snowstorm) Holding the side of the pool is helpful for some gentle leg stretches too. I found a warm therapy pool great for relaxing my muscles.

Well! My poor hip has had to take a back seat the last 2 days due to my horse... he had a run in with some barbed wire and needed the vet, luckily now I can drive I could get up to see him. Vet was very worried he may have punctured his tendon sheath which would mean either surgery or.. the worst... I couldn't cope last night, I just cried and cried. He only had surgery a few months ago for something serious so I didn't need this, it almost seemed like my hip was so unimportant at this point, I just did whatever was needed. I kept saying how I would go through surgery a million times if it meant he didn't have to. LUCKILY it seems he may be okay, I still need to keep watch but so far he might have just missed it by millimetres.

I have spent a lot of the last 2 days in a field, I've walked a lot, but also had friends change his bandage and make sure I can sit down if I need to which makes me feel very lucky.

Sorry to go completely off topic but it just shows how life can get in the way when all you should be doing is recovering!

I'm down for the evening now, I've got my comfy clothes on, I'm lying on the sofa with my feet up and I'm not moving for anything!!

Here's a picture of my beautiful boy and me today...

Aww, this made my eyes well up. Selfless, unconditional love for your beautiful horse. Thankfully it sounds like things are on the right path. Please take care of yourself in all of this. It sounds as though you are, happy to hear it. Don't forget that you can still be icing if you're feeling sore at all.
Nice photo of you two. Wishing speedy healing to you both.
A peaceful evening to you, Rhiannon.
