You go, Bamagirl! I am having a bad hip day, wishing my surgery date was sooner, my right hip has worsened beyond what the left hip was about before surgery. Hearing your words mean more to me than you know. So, bottom line is the right hip still feels good while the left hip is nearly pain free and getting better everyday? I am ready to join your club and thanks for writing. May the best of luck and blessings always be with you...

@waterman1 My right hip feels pretty dang good most of the time. It is still a little stiff but we will be working on that in therapy. The left is only 2 weeks out and of course getting better every day. Most of the time I forget to take anything for pain. I can go 8 to 10 hours before I realize some ibuprofen would be helpful. It really sucks I know having one sort of good hip and a bad hip. You'll get through it though. Not too much longer for you to wait and you'll be happy you had it done. My doctor told me yesterday that as I heal it will only get better. So much different than before when the future looked bleak. Hang in there!!

I'm so happy for you @bamagirl ! Finally to be rid of that terrible arthritis pain in both hips! It's really a miracle, isn't it! @waterman1 I had my left hip done May 5 and am doing great and we'll soon be scheduling the right hip THR so I look forward to reading the recovery story of your second hip too. Best of luck!

Hey Bamagirl!
Just checking in to see how you are feeling/doing? You know I'm scheduled for my second hip surgery on June 9, so tell me the bottom line you know I want the details, right? Did the second one go as easy as the first? Take Care...

Hi @waterman1 I'm doing good. I am back to work today and walking around without a cane for the past 3 or 4 days. My walking isn't "normal" yet because we are still working on strengthening my muscles in PT so I don't waddle when I walk. But my walking is improving every day. I am so happy to be feeling relatively normal again. My body certainly lets me know though when I am overdoing it. I was busy a lot yesterday and even though I rested in the afternoon, I felt pretty run down and sore about 8pm. The best thing ever is sleeping comfortably. I cannot yet sleep on either side, but just to be able to sleep without pain is amazing. I can almost sleep on my right side since it has been 3 months since surgery, but it is still a little uncomfortable. So I am going to wait another month or so before I try it again.

I think I told you before that I had a little more pain with my second surgery than the first. Goes to show you that each hip is different. I had an awful burning pain in my left thigh for about 4 days following surgery. They think it was nerve pain in that one of my nerves in the area got nicked or moved around and bothered. It was really difficult getting around the first few days but by the time I got out of the hospital it had greatly diminished. After that the recovery has been really smooth.

You'll do great. Just relax and let it happen. It will be over before you know it!

Hey Bamagirl!
Well, you are in the same situation as me though I still have one bad hip - I can't sleep on my bad hip side so might as well have two hips healing as far as sleep goes I'm still on my back just like you. Hey, what type implants do you have, please? I'm asking everyone the same question now, guess I have gone nuts, LOL...

@waterman1 If I remember correctly, I have ceramic ball and cup with polyethylene liner. Doctor said it would last longer and are strong in case (heaven forbid) I am ever in a car accident.

Week four update: I have been getting around now for almost a week with no cane. PT is helping to normalize my walking by strengthening the muscles around the hip. Otherwise I fall into a "waddling"-type of gait. I don't want to waddle! Working part time this week. I think full time next week. Still have sanding/walking limitations by the doctor. Strange thing is my right hip (done in February), is bothering me some with pain in the groin area. It isn't there all the time, but more times than not. If it continues, I will bring it up with my OS when I see him next month. Other than that, I'm doing great. Can't believe I can walk around stores and such and not have to hobble and lean on the basket! It will only get better so I couldn't be happier. I'm looking forward to getting back to the gym for some exercise, especially I miss swimming. But I'm going to wait a week or so more before trying the swimsuit to see if it bothers my scar areas.

Wow Bamagirl, that is really awesome to think of 'no cane'. You are doing it, keep it up, walk any way you want, like a duck is OK with me!! Great news...
I'm having a delimma of my own with surgery number 2. I went for a second opinion so Oh Boy here I go. Second doc believes in anterior surgery is far better and less pain and less hospital time. He also believes resurfacing is possible and highly recommends it with one THR already. I'm thinking of changing surgeons and waiting until June 23 with a hip that hurts worse everyday. I have to make a decision on Friday, so it's stressful. My big question is if anterior surgery is better than posterior, then why doesn't the insurance companies demand all surgeons learn anterior and stop posterior altogether?

@waterman1. I had posterior approach and even though I have restrictions I know that my surgeon was top of field in this approach. She doesn't do anterior way. I couldn't anyways due to my hip displaisa. Some say with anterior recovery is better. But I have read some have struggled. My recovery has been so awesome and I am thankful and grateful everyday st 23 days post op. I am sure you will make the best choice for you. All my best. Sue

@waterman1 My surgeon will be doing posterior as well and as far as I am concerned if that is what he is trained in I really don't want him experimenting on me by changing to anterior... THAT would be scary stuff!

Hey Sue and thanks! Yep I am there with all of you who feel blessed with a great surgery and recovery with posterior THR. Looking towards having two implants changed the playing field a little bit for me and of course this board and all the great input from everyone who has this in common now. After witnessing anterior surgery on this board, and experiencing posterior 4 day hospital stay, I am starting to believe anterior is the better way. The surgery was hard on me and I'm in pretty good shape. Go look at my purple scar? Now a surgeon tells me in detail why anterior is better and that is why he was re-trained anterior approach. Then, the next big subject. Modular vs. solid stem and cobalt vs. ceramic. If you must have two hip implants, what is the best choice and I know we can debate this stuff for weeks to come. Why did my first surgeon go with modular, cobalt implant? Why posterior? Is it because he is not willing to be re-trained in the latest technology? Then why do we read about others who have problems with the very implant I have? Therefore, maybe I have little to lose to have each hip with two surgeons and two implants and two techniques? Who knows, right? Ugggg, stress, and confusion? Yep, and I don't want to be some 'trouble maker' who creates doubt in all the 'comrades' of this board going through the exact same thing everyday, but thanks for listening and maybe I should just shut up and quit whining...

Sorry Bamagirl, I may have hijacked your thread so moderator please move the above if needed...

Well, I haven't checked in here in a while and I'm not sure who is still listening, but thought I would provide an update. I've been looking at other threads and providing advice where I can, but have not updated my thread.

So, it has been 6 months since my RTHR and 4 months since the LTHR and I think I'm doing great. PT was a big help in regaining my muscle strength and walking normal again. Over the summer I was able to take my daughter and nephew to a local water park and to the Circus Circus in Vegas to ride the rides. I even rode 2 roller coasters! And walking around isn't such a chore anymore. I took my nephew to the mall for school clothes shopping. I could never have done that last summer. I saw my OS last Friday and he said the x-rays look great - no changes since surgery. He wants to see me in 6 months. My only issue right now is stiffness after sitting (seems to be a common problem) and tendon pain in the right groin area (I think it is the psoas tendon). The tendon pain comes and goes and is better when I stretch it good every day. The OS said to give soft tissues more time to heal - 1 year he said. I think it may be scar tissue, but I'm not sure. It isn't bad and certainly nothing like that darn arthritis pain!

So overall I'm happy and trying to get the weight loss back on track. I need to lose at least 100 lbs more. I had lost 70 lbs before surgery but then gained 10 lbs back afterwards. Still working on losing those 10 lbs. :) I have some mild/moderate knee arthritis under the knee caps and certainly do not want knee replacements too.

Lovely to hear that all is going well @bamagirl....great report!! I'm sure the weight will come off in time...something I'm struggling with too! X

@bamagirl What a great update...I was only 6 days behind you on your second hip. I am so glad you are doing so well. I just finished my last pt and I am doing so great. My goals: to tie my shoes again ...success ...and to walk without limping...success :)...I always get stiff if sitting too long, but it works itself out after few steps. I thought you might be interested in this: I have a small spot in groin area that is being stubborn..like a knot ...They suggested i get the "The Stick"..(a massage roller) .I got it on amazon and i use it every morning and at night and it deep massages that area and its working. Stretching does help. So glad we are both doing well....:)

@bamagirl Great report!
Glad to hear you are doing fun things you couldn't do last year.
I have the stiffness upon standing. And, sometimes a slight pain every now and then in the psoas area, too.
I can tell it is muscle as it goes away overnight.
@Sue629 glad you are doing well, too! Interesting about the 'stick'. I will check that out.
Way to go ladies!
