THR Recovery greetings from an Aussie - my journey

@Sukuma, that’s exactly how I would describe my walking. I stayed on crutches for 6 weeks before going down to one for two weeks. I’m sure you will break my slow records but I’ve learnt this hip just doesn’t want to do things quickly. It’s a good thing it likes being in the pool - which is my happy place - or we would just not be speaking to each other. :heehee:

It's comforting to know that someone else experienced a similar feeling with the walking, as when you have these things in isolation without being able to share with someone else it can be worrying. I suspect I will remain on crutches for a while aswell.

I am so looking forward to getting back into the swimming pool!

@Sukuma, you’ll find your strength will come along in leaps and bounds once you can get back in the pool, and you’re definitely not alone. Don’t hurt yourself trying to break records - your hip will do what it wants in its own time. I wish I could have forced myself off crutches earlier and claimed the title of “superhuman”, but it wasn’t to be.

Well, I was having a couple of good days in a row and I know there’s always a backwards step to come shortly after, but I didn’t think it would happen the way it did. I was awoken this morning to 4 1/2kgs of kitty mass trying to tightrope balance right on my incision scar! That wakes you up in a hurry!

@Mintae Oh those mischievous purr-a-medics. And yes my cats did pull some of those ouchie stunts... but mine were Maine Coon cats and weighed 18lbs and 22lbs! Shouting OUCH loud did deter them ... for a while. :catdance:

@djklaugh, kitties do have a knack for finding your sore spots! I’m just glad my two aren’t as big as yours when it comes to that skill!

And once the cat finds comfy spot next to you or on top of you they NEVER want to move!

It will be 9 weeks later today that I had my surgery. I’m in a lot of pain today as I think my leg is overworked from using a cane all week. It’s fine when it’s at rest but when you move, wow! Achey, pinchy, stabbies, burnies - the whole gang. That leg must be so weak and worn out.

Happy Two Month Anniversary...to date. :wave:
I'm sorry you're in pain. Please rest and ice and hopefully it eases soon. Take good care, Mintae.
@Mintae

I keep wondering if I’ve damaged something because the pain isn’t getting better. I’ve gone back to one crutch, and am contemplating two. Pain has spread back into my rib cage, with groin pain, buttock pain, lower back pain and outer hip pain. This is where I was weeks ago. In going forward, all I’ve done is end up at the beginning. When does this ever stop? I looked out at my pool this morning, which I didn’t get into, and burst into tears. I’m so tired. This week started out so promising….

And yes, I know there are people way worse off than me and people doing way better than me. As per usual, my problems fall through the cracks of nobody giving a darn because I’m not on the “interesting” end of either spectrum. Yeah. I think this will be my last post. I would like to thank those who have been kind and friendly. It’s been very much appreciated.

Hi @Mintae Sorry to hear you're in pain and that you didn't get to the pool this morning. Don't despair you know from others that there are peaks and troughs in this journey and I suspect a heavy kitty attack didn't help. One day at a time, keep taking the painkillers as you need them, even it means restarting some you thought you had stopped. Take care and best wishes.

@Mintae....I hope you change your mind and decide to stick around here with your fellow BoneSmarties. Where else are you gonna find a community that actually understands what you're going through!!

I know it's hard when recovery is slow. But to be realistic, you are dealing with more issues than just your hip and that will impact your ability to get moving again and be pain free. If it's any consolation, I don't have all those other factors and I'm still working on my gait .... my THR was last August. I was not expecting my recovery to take this long, but I have been dealing with a bunch of muscle tightening problems that are just now sort of resolving. I've been working with a therapist who does (and taught me to do) pressure point massage. This process releases the tight muscle spasms so that you can walk like a normal person instead of quasimodo. This is a slow process and the muscles can easily spasm and tighten up again if you're not careful. They get "trained" to be in spasm rather than loose and flexible. The pressure point releases work to train them to be normal and loose again instead of tight.

Do you have any way to search out this type of therapy to give it a try? It hasn't been quick either....I've been in therapy for just over 2 months and still have to do the pressure releases almost daily on my groin and upper thigh. But it does help.

Even if you don't try this type of therapy, I hope you can begin to feel like your recovery is "normal" for you, just like mine is for me. Some of us just take longer than others. It's why the surgeons warn people that complete recovery can take a year or more.

Hang in there and know we'll always be here to support you.

@Mintae
I’m on the same timeline as you and my back was really sore yesterday. I think the advice on here is really helpful in terms of being active but without overdoing it. Every time I push a bit harder, I get a new ache or pain but so far, they’ve all passed. I hope yours do too. Take care. It’s going to be a long slog I think.

Yeah. I think this will be my last post.
Hopefully you'll reconsider. We are here for support and encouragement when you need it.
