Bilateral TKR Recovery Diary

Congratulations on the six months! I pray things continue to improve, and that I'm as successful as you.

I pray things continue to improve, and that I'm as successful as you.
You seem to be gaining on me at the moment, so it's looking good. I'm not planning to do any near 400 milers either, a 10 mile time trial, 30 mile criterium (circuit race) or 50 mile road ride is about my limit.

:wow2: Roy, you're really doing great at 6 month! You give me something to look forward to!:thumb: However I won't be doing any races except for maybe racing my husband to the car to go to dinner or a movie!:th_heehee:
I would like to feed off of your experience a bit, if I may since you had both knees done. When you got home did you use underarm crutches, forearm crutches, walker or cane? I'll be starting with a two wheel walker to start and thought I would progress to a cane, but now I'm thinking maybe one cane won't be enough with both knees done. Your input would greatly be appreciated, thanks.:friends:

Walker for just the first day post-surgery, forearm crutches thereafter. At 10 days post-op was walking around the house without crutches or cane, slowly.

Standing was not a problem, getting to standing was -- force goes through the damaged knees. Walking was OK, just gentle and slow. But it was 3 weeks before I left the house, to walk 200 yards with a walking stick.

HTH.

:yay::yay::yay: way to go Roy!!! Great job at 6 months :thumb: Your reports have been so enjoyable to read and great for any prospective knee folks to read :thumb:

I've just worked out mileages since last year:

Apr: 803
May: 471
Jun: 283
Jul: 177
Aug: 74
Sept: 6
Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan: 0
Feb: 45
Mar: 137
Apr: 503

You can see how things declined as the whole thing went to sh went to pot. But I'm amazed having just counted up to hit 500 for April, with no real effort. Now to try for post-decline mileages and maybe a bit of racing again.

Congratulations on returning to the riding the you want to do. The added bonus is you can walk and do everyday things without pain, really I found that part to be the most life changing.

Thanks, Roy, for that info about my signature. I haven't had any training as a moderator since there's going to be the software change the end of the month. Jo is waiting til then to give me training----so I don't know these things. She just ask me to continue as I have been for the time being. She took care of the disclaimer for me.

Six months today
. . .

For anyone pre-op reading this who's also read the tales of woe on here, consider that a full recovery is normal. Most people who have successful knee surgery just get on with their lives and aren't boasting and showing off on here like me.

Hi Roy,

You're doing even better than you thought, because it's only 5 months since your BTKR.

I had my Revision TKR 3 days after your BTKR, and I only make it 5 months.

Your progress has been a good example of a normal recovery for everyone and your posts have been very useful for me.

Like you, I've had a normal, uneventful recovery adn I am pleased with my progress.

Thank you for your posts.

Celle

Hey,

Here in NZ, we'd call you a Pom, not a Limey! :wink1:

I can say that. because I'm a Pommie-Kiwi, having emigrated from the UK to NZ in 1968. I still have dual nationality and carry 2 passports when I travel.

Keep up the positive posting!

:hysterical: Oh, Lordy, I woke my husband up from a nap laughing out loud! :loll: He fell back asleep before I could tell him why.

Good job, Roy. Right now I am stuck in the beginning again and I can ride 20 whole minutes a day. Kelly

Hi Roy
I can't remember where I saw it but you wrote recently that your knees are more or less normal at five months. Is that from the moment you wake up or do you still start with any stiffness?

I ask because I am now 7 months and 4 months and still wake with lots of stiffness particularly in the younger knee.

Also now you are cycling a lot more do you still do any rom exercises? I find the new knee is still quite stubborn and aches when I push it back beneath the chair.

No morning stiffness in my knees; they click still, much of the time, but no pain and the clicking is gradually reducing

Yes, we are all different. No doubt some stretching eases it?

The cycling is absolutely no use (for me) in extending flexion beyond that needed actually to ride. I don't do enough ROM stretches, because I'm lazy and because I often forget. My flexion is about 135 and not really getting any better - no reason why it should unless I actually do some stretches, I guess.

But from the cats' prospective: what's the fun in that? :th_heehee: And you, of course, are supposed to be flattered by the fact that they're willing to share even this with you.

@roy: Does it really matter if ROM stays at 135 if you can do everything you want ?
