I was doing better today by widening my stance when walking with the rollator, but when I extended my op leg back so that I could fill the dog’s water bowl, a sharp pain made me yelp. Got back to the recliner on ice. Still can’t put full weight on the op leg either. But, as you’ve all reminded me, I’m just 10 days out.

What approach did you have? If anterior that is one of the few movements you shouldn't do.

Mine was posterior, and my surgeon said I could do it if I needed to pick up something I couldn’t get with an extender. That’s why the sudden pain took me by surprise.

Day 11. The sharp pain has subsided, and I’m able to walk more easily, although leaning heavily on the rollator or countertop. Knocked a package of cookies off the side table at 4 am—Bentley gulped an unexpected morning snack before I could get myself up to grab it. Typical lab. I wonder how long it will be before I’ll feel comfortable standing with full weight on my op leg. Still feels like it’s longer than the non-op leg. Will be so happy to be back with my trusted physical therapist Friday, but not looking forward to bandage and staple removal. Have to increase my activity a little tomorrow. Happy hips, everyone!

I have two large house dogs. I have a yard work type grabber that has been super helpful! Sorry to hear about your leg pain.

Happy One Month Anniversary!
How are you doing? Wondering how the staple removal went and if you're enjoying steady progress in PT?
Please let us know when you have time. Hope to hear from you soon!

Thanks! Staple removal was painless (33 staples), and PT is going well. I’m walking my dog 1/2 mile a day now; hip is definitely stiff and wanting ice after. Because of the discrepancy in my leg length, I’m having more back pain, but am hoping that resolves with time. And I get to drive to PT tomorrow (it’s right in my community, so an easy 2 miles)!

I’ll start by saying I absolutely love this group! It helps so much to see that others have had the same issues and they resolved over time.
I’m now 7 weeks out from my anterior RTHP and was discharged from PT Friday. I have my post-surgery appt with my surgeon July 10th. I was doing great with little to no pain as of Friday, but woke Saturday to pain in the hip and my knee that had me limping all day. I’m hoping it’s just that I overdid it in my final PT session. I cut my usual walk in half today (Sunday) and am back to icing after I walk. Has anyone else had this weird relapse around week 7-8? If it continues, I’ll push for x-rays at my appt Weds. Up until Friday, I was walking, driving and bending almost normally. And because my surgery was anterior, my therapist had given me clearance to sleep on my stomach around week 4. Heavenly sleep! Finally!

Not weird, very common, and can keep happening. Our bodies didn't like what they did to us and the healing goes on for a long time.

I’m hoping it’s just that I overdid it in my final PT session.
That's most likely what it is. Our bodies let us know (unfortunately, often the day AFTER) when we've done more than it is ready for. Take it easy for a day or two, spend a little extra time icing and elevating and it will probably resolve before your appointment.

Please let us know!

Follow-up appt with my surgeon was yesterday, at exactly 8 weeks. I’ve been released with NO restrictions other than to follow my body’s cues and not overdo it! He agreed that last weekend’s pain was probably just that, partially because I’m not allowed to take NSAIDS with my blood thinner. Instead, he put me in a 5-day course of steroids to reduce any that may remain, noting that my gait and inflammation may not be 100% normal until about 6 months. At least I can bend and do things like carefully fasten my shoes and cut my toenails again. (They seem like such minor tasks until you can’t do them.) I dropped back to 1/2-mile walks this week and will increase back to 1 mile next week. And Bentley can go back to monthly baths! Hallelujah!

Have you added Bentley to our social thread of pets?

The thing about our orthos saying "no restrictions" is that we've had members who said "oh, then I can go ahead and ... (insert hanggliding or riding camels or whatever)" and the OS looked panicky and going "No, not that!". Also those who went ahead and did a favorite activity and having a setback leading the the OS looking befuddled and saying "well why did you do THAT?!"

So proceed prudently; at less than two months out there's still healing taking place PLUS what I have called The Great Reset - the muscles, tendons, and ligaments that slowly adapted to our prior structure are still figuring out the new one.

Love Bentley, he is a handsome boy!
Happy Two Month Anniversary! I hope you have a great week.

Hi there . I am 8 weeks now and still waiting not to limp, when I dint use my crutches and to be able to sit in a notmal chair without having pain and a feeling like everything is to tight around my scar. How are those things going for you at the moment ? I think your dog but also your living room lookes so nice :puppysmooze:

I’m doing great after a course of steroids that finally fixed that “tight” feeling (I can’t take anti-inflammatories). Try not to get discouraged. I found 8 weeks was the tipping point; I suddenly woke with no pain and no limp. Just don’t overdo it and keep icing! Thanks from Bentley!

Not limping does seem to take a lot of concentration. It seems like we're in self-protection mode because of the long-terms pain. Maybe we just have to unlearn that habit of being so careful of our formerly "bad hips".
