TKR Physio left me disheartened

Yes, yes.....sleeping a lot is part of a good recovery. It's the time that your body does its best healing. So snooze, nap, siesta, nod off, zonk-out to your heart's content.

Well...an update! I have been feeling a bit down for the last few days, as although I can see daily progress in the exercises, I didn't feel that it was transferring itself into walking properly. Also, after a good walk three days ago that ended up in a nice wander round our village churchyard taking photographs, I was rewarded by two days of hell when as well as a stiff, painful right knee, the muscles at the top if my left leg (hip replacement less than two years ago) decided to give up the will and were knotted and painful.

Anyway, I woke up this morning and was surprised to find things were much easier, which was just as well as I had the dreaded physio! Today I saw a different man and he began by saying how impressed he was with the way I was walking. He didn't seem at all worried that I'd arrived on two crutches and said that I didn't seem to be using them for support anyway. I explained that I'm not using anything round the house and he was fine.

He commented that the knee was healing very well...great scar and minimal swelling. I said that I was concerned that it wasn't bending too well and he had a good look, then showed me a new exercise. Then he measured the bend...and...it's gone from 50 degrees three weeks ago, to 70 degrees two weeks ago, to 85 degrees today! I know there is some way to go, but it's exactly six weeks today since the op and I am finally feeling it will be ok.

I have also ordered a float to practise leg kicks with when I start swimming, which may be next week.

I have also given the theatre visit some thought, and following an offer from my son's girlfriend I am now being driven to Plymouth, so can rest up on the back seat of the car, am arranging with the hotel to chill an ice pack, getting a taxi to the theatre, then back to the hotel for a good rest before being picked up the next day. In the meantime I am going to gradually increase the time I can sit with the foot down on the floor, and if I can't manage the whole thing I'll stay as long as I can.

Sorted.

Well done you! @Lizzie Pearson - you know what they say: 'slowly, slowly catchy monkey'. Not that I am saying that you are a monkey, or that your knee is - heaven forbid.:heehee: But slow and steady and you will see gradual and constant progress.
Hope the theatre trip is a big success and you thoroughly enjoy yourself.

Be very careful with leg kicks with a float and be absolutely 110% certain that your scar is absolutely and totally healed before using a public pool. Nasty things lurk in those waters! IMHO - at this stage in your recovery you should still really be doing gentle hydrotherapy exercises, not kicking with a float. Plus exercising in the water will totally wear you out - so be warned! You should be able to find some exercises on the internet - if not, I noted down all the ones I was taught as I had weeks upon weeks of hydrotherapy. They are really straightforward. A couple of friends here wanted to know what they could do in the pool so I PM'd them the list and descriptions - they found them useful. If you want a copy for your Pool visits, just let me know.

Anyway - have a good weekend and take care

Yes, I'd love a copy, please! Thank you! Incidentally, the theatre visit is to see Lee Mack!

Great to hear you're making good progress. The walking "normally" is a gradual process, but it does get better. It sounds like you're on your way. :)

Saw the consultant today. He was very pleased with me! Laughed his head off when I explained why I was still using crutches ('cos it's like parting the Red Sea...people get out of my way...), was pleased with the scar/swelling, etc, said to keep working on the bending and that from now on I can do what I like...kneel (dream on, at the moment) swim, drive when I feel ready, etc. All in all very pleasing. Don't have to see him again for 12 months when they'll X-Ray it and make sure everything's ok. He showed me the post-op X-rays...impressive bit of metalwork!
