PKR Patella femoral recovery'

Oh god, are you ok?

You have been doing so, so well until now. Really hope you've not done too much damage xxx

I would definitely call my surgeon and see what she/he says.

Often falls “just” upset the soft tissue but it’s still a good idea to get it checked out, hopefully an X-ray, to be sure there wasn’t more than soft tissue damage.

My knee twisted in s way I thought was not humanly possible. Totally excruciating ,
The knee is swollen but not actually feel to bad .. my calf is double in size and a bruised ... do you think that’s ok just ice elevate etc? Or should I go to the go for a check up??? Thanks
I think you should let your surgeon know what happened, and ask to get your knee checked.

It's most likely to be soft tissue damage, but it will be reassuring to know that.

Hi all thought i would give a little update after my tumble. So was confirmed i have a grade II calf muscle tear after my tumble. Had a scan of my leg and the implant is holding firm yay. Actually all the med crew said how impressive it is and it shows how the implant is set rock solid.
My knee is actually fine now but have been told not to enter the gym for 2 weeks (due to the calf) back to baby physio again but know its for the best.
Even though a bit of a set back still feeling stronger in myself - have now stopped all pain meds but keeping the naproxin for the moment as my knee (and had a friend now in my calf) swells .
Off with the family for a week holiday so hopefully the knee (and calf) will behave themselves - will report back in a week.
Hope all are doing well
x

It's amazing how tough these implants are! Thank God yours is OK. That tear is going to take a while to heal. Please take it easy and let it heal at its own pace. You can't force it to heal any fastest than it will. I'm so sorry you had this set back. But, it will be fine in the long run.

Well officially 4 months today - cannot believe its 4 months yikes.
So glad to report knee is doing great.
I am back too full time work, running (well more of a shuffle jog but still..), managing to make it up and down some tors on Dartmoor, cycling (on my recently purchased new bike.. well a treat to myself) and just all in all being able to do normal things again.
I guess i went into this with my eyes open.. i never have expected to get to a place where my new knee is as good as if i had never had an injury, or some maniac in scrubs with power tools chopping bits off it but i wanted it to be able to get to a place when i was not tailoring my life around it.
So yes it still swells, still niggling at times, still more than niggling at times but i would have the same again in a heart beat.
I go back to see the consultant end Nov for x-rays etc and hoping that he is happy with everything at that point.
Will keep you all informed.
Good luck all

Sounds like you are doing great @newpartial ! Still plenty of healing going on at 4 months so all that discomfort will ease. Just takes time.

Enjoy your new toy! :biking:

Welcome!
I’ve had 2 lateral PKRs, both with short joint recoveries. BUT underestimated the toll of any knee surgery on all the ligaments , tendons, etc in both good and bad legs.
BS go slowly advice is perfect.
Walking, I was advised, at first is usually slow 200 steps a time, 3x a day. So jaunts to the bus stop ?....
PS Her Nurse Dog reminds me of yours, @Motherbone
LOL, my iphone is still opening at older posts ! Not to worry,BS—I enjoyed reading about her PKRs first days

Hi , it was an Avon patella femoral , my surgeon actually said he preferred using the Sigma but that has been taken off the market I think for pat fems.
I really think it’s more to do with the skill of one with the knife rather than the metal work.
Only thing about patella femoral they used to use inlay types years ago the onlay designs they use now are looking better in the joint registry studies .. England and Wales (njr) just published theirs which shows the stats if you are interested ?

@newpartial .... do you have any documentation that Stryker's partial hardware has been removed from the market? All their items are still listed on their website. Could it be that the Stryker components for PKRs might just be removed from the NHS program and not completely off the market?

Hi Jamie sorry was a typo it’s the Sigma DePuy (PFJ) that has been discontinued. The Avon is still going strong. Thanks
