THR Noxus recovery thread

Boy, that’s quite a story! And it’s amazing that you’re back strong at hockey. I have to agree with you that there is probably a very small percentage of our community who can relate to lifting weights to the point of exhaustion and nausea, but if that floats your boat, I’m glad you have been able to go back to it. Sorry about your son. I hope he doesn’t need surgery, but at least you’ll be able to help him through that if it’s needed.

Happy One Year Anniversary!
Thanks for stopping by to update. Wow…you're really back! You're right, heavy barbell squats and lunges to the point of being nauseated is not appealing, but if that's your thing, I'll zip it. :wink:

It's wonderful to hear you're doing well and feel THR was the best decision you ever made. I am sorry about your little guy and hope that surgery isn't necessary. He's lucky to have you as a loving supporter, I am sure that is comforting to him. I wish you both the all the best!
@Noxus

Happy anniversary!
You are doing great! Hockey & weight lifting both so strenuous & glad the new body part is doing right by you!
My 9 year old grandson's hockey team won the championship last Sunday! So much fun, was like they won Stanley Cup for goodness sakes.
Hockey is one of my favorite sports along with football.
Keep up the great progress & I'll tell you, Year 2 will be even more fabulous.
All my best to your son. Let's hope no surgery is necessary but with your strong mental attitude if he does need surgery he will be in good hands.

Well an update, the rhino brace inexplicably worked! Both boys have very very mild dysplasia now on the one side, but literally nothing to do about it. No surgery needed, no physio, nothing! Just annual screenings till they're 5 and then only come back if they start having pain or problems which the Ortho does not suspect. Over the moon.

That's fantastic news! I'm so pleased for you :flwrysmile:

Great news for your boys!! All sounds good for you and family. Here’s to a great summer for you all.

I am 5 days postop, and just had a bad few days. This whole thread was so well written, a joy to read, and very motivational. A heartfelt thankyou to everyone who contributed to this. Cheers, Gary

@Noxus
Thank you! Hockey season just ended and though I only got in for the last month or two, it was really good to be back and pain free. Time to hang up the skates and bring out the mountain bike, snow is gone and it's summer time coming.

It gets easier. I'm very happy that the read meant something to you, I hope you tackle your recovery and get back to life on your terms quick.

2 year update

It's crazy to think back and remember the fear and uncertainty I had going into the surgery. The bar I had hoped to achieve was so laughably low that I just shake my head at what I was hoping for vs what I actually have. I have made a 100% recovery and there is nothing I can't do. I don't even think about it most of the time, I do all activities including hockey, weightlifting, baseball etc. Last summer I began running again and I currently run 3-5 times a week with zero pain or issues. The range of motion is full and its such a revelation. I'll naturally have the same fears of what if when I eventually have to do the next one, but for now this has been the best thing I've ever done for myself in my life. The shift from feeling crippled to capable again cannot be put into words.

What a beautiful post, @Noxus. Words like this from someone who has completely recovered from a hip replacement can mean so much to someone who is worried like you were prior to surgery. Thank you for taking time to make someone’s day here on BoneSmart.

What a great thing to read! I'm happy you are doing so well.

Thank you for sharing your recovery story. I know it will help ally some of the fear that our new members are wrestling with as they consider having a THR.

Thanks for the upbeat and heartfelt update.
Good for you! So happy you can enjoy all your activities.
My grandson has become quite the hockey player these past two years. Our weekends are now spent in hockey rinks and I wouldn’t miss a minute!
We’ve had the last two weekends off cause winter season ended but in April summer hockey begins.

Happy Two Year Anniversary, Noxus! It was so thoughtful of you to take the time to stop by.
It's wonderful to read about how well you're doing two years post op.

The shift from feeling crippled to capable again cannot be put into words.
The Best!
It is so true and was the type of confirmation I was looking for as a lurker here, trying to gather up the courage to schedule my surgery. I hope Spring / Summer 2026 turns out to be one of your best. :SUNsmile:
Take good care!

Noxus, thanks so much for journaling your experience. I am 77 and headed for R-THR in two weeks. It has been a great reality check for me to read of your experience; ups and downs, doubts and successes. Your experience, so well communicated, will support me well through my journey.

I'm so happy for the good news of your sons! Such a great relief for you and your family.

Again, Thank You!
