@Zebra when I went to the hip class, we had to fill out a scorecard for the discharge coordinator relating to help and home, age and a few other factors that determined whether or not you would need rehab. I think that may have been for insurance eligibility as well.

@NoraJ I'll be in for 3 days, so I'm thinking I'll need some entertainment. They didn't tell me anything about needing real clothes rather than pjs, but I bought pajamas that are shorts and the hospital is literally down the street from my house, so someone can bring me clothes or whatever I need

@muckingabout

I'm sorry if I give you advice you may not need or that may not be appropriate for your hospitalization. I just know that I was overwhelmed with all the stuff I brought because PT, PT, Nursing etc...were doing so much education that I, even as a nurse, found overwhelming. And PLEASE remember that NURSES ARE NOTORIOUSLY THE VERY WORST PATIENTS. Thankfully my OS office is well organized and were really responsive to all the questions I asked (via phone call) after my surgery. A few more days.

Last night I slept on my "bad side" (sorry PT) for the first time in years. My body pillow between my legs, hugging a pillow in my arms. It was the most restful, pain free night!!!

I'm sending positive thoughts your way and it seems like so many others are as well!!!!

Oh, no. I'll take any and all advice from those who have been there. I can sort it out when I need to :) I think I'm being cemented and screwed, so that sucker is not going anywhere.

@muckingabout I am back home now. I will not give my summary in this thread, but I feel I am recovering well. You have absorbed tons of good information here. I can certainly understand your anxiety leading up to the final days. I was very casual until that last hour or so prepping process. I was in hospital day of surgery, day 1 after and released about 6pm day 2 after. I had an ipad and brought books, but never opened the book like I thought I might. The time there was fairly busy at times. Between resting, eating, in- patient PT and general monitoring I did not feel much time to do more than a few emails with family & friends. Best of luck in your own surgery and I will be putting healing thoughts out there for you. Be well

@muckingabout

Hello again. Yesterday I had my 8 week followup with an x-ray. It was cool to see my new hip on that x- ray!!! Here is where I am at this amount of time out KEEING IN MIND THAT EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT!

With my anterior approach and at the same age as you, 50, I was given the green light to proceed, AT 8 WEEKS, without the postoperative restrictions as before although given a VERY stern warning by my OS and PA NOT to suddenly increase my activity to the point where I would move backwards in my progress.....this would, in fact, be what I would do without this warning. The only true restriction they both want me to follow is lifting my operative leg straight up from a lying position; using that leg as a fulcrum, but again every OS is different in their restrictions.

But what I wanted to tell you was, at least according to my OS, my progress will somewhat reflect the time it took for me to get as bad as I did and so I should consider the way I was using my muscles in all sorts of bad ways to compensate for my declining condition. I tell you this in the hopes you will not get discouraged by things like waking up very stiff. I will also tell you on this blog (how embaressing but I want you to know) that in the morning I am very stiff and often wake with a very full bladder and have a difficult time making it to the bathroom and have had a few little accidents.....OK there have been a few "bigger ones". But this is really because I do not anticipate the time it will take to get there....Remember you will be stiff i the morning. That is the time, at least, that I the most stiff.

I know you are very nervous and I know I was, but I am very very excited for you! Imagine you may soon be tying your shoes in a normal kind of way....this is down the road a little (maybe not, we are all different) .....and a lot of other things you thought you could never do again.....Remember....Nice deep breaths when you get nervous.....try to recall the names of the people caring for you in the hospital.......exercises to distract you (but the second one is also polite)...maybe sadoku (wrong spelling).

More later just to let you know my thoughts are with you..

Thanks. I really appreciate the good thoughts and advice.

@muckingabout

Hope all is well!!! Thinking about you! The first few hours after surgery are so filled with stuff like "did you pee yet" and that sort of stuff! Coming out of the twilight sleep is really weird. I was scared. I remember it. And I didn't like not feeling my legs AT ALL. Some people say its nice to not feel the pain.....I hope all is good.

Thanks @lee0605. I seemed to come out of it fine. I was just so grateful to open my eyes and know it was done. Thanks for all your advice

Hey!!!! Your on the other side!! I thought I had written before but I sometimes have trouble with this site and my alerts. Hope your feeling OK. Stay ahead of the pain. Don't be a hero and wait until your in pain before taking your meds. Then you'll have to play catch up. Not a good idea. The was one of the first concepts I learned in Nursing school. Not to give advice but everyone should have been educated about that. Congrats!

Hey @lee0605 I feel great. I'm at a one medicated, but I've run half an hour behind a couple of times.then I've spiked up to what I call a 5, but I think might be higher on their scale. My poor roomie had a spinal fusion and she's at like a 10 All the time.

My biggest issue now is dizziness

@muckingabout

I'm glad you're keeping on top of it. Frankly I hate that pain scale. What is 10 really? Some nurses call it "being hit by a bus". In that case my pain scale is always 0-1. I mean come on! Being hit by a bus!!! My husband says a 10 should be "being hit by a bicycle". Glad you're doing well. The diluadid made me feel dizzy. Plus laying down and getting up fast. You should really sit at the side of your bed for a few minutes before standing. I'm used to just insisting on that because I have really low blood pressure (orthostatic hypotension). I faint if I stand to quickly. Try asking if you can sit on the bed for a minute or two. Nurses are so busy they have a tendency to stand you upright right away. But they are all probably assigned 100,000 patients!!!

muckingabout has a new thread, " Today is the big day" in the Hip Replacement Recovery forum.

@muckingabout

I hope you are recovering well. I dropped off the internet for the most part after. I hope you keep a better log and account of your recovery. Congrats on putting this behind you and I hope you are feeling great in your 3rd day and heading for home

@grnplatebird I'm feeling great! Thanks. I have a thread on the other side. I'll probably update more, but I need to read what I wrote already because I'm repeating myself a lot IRL, so I probably am here too:)
