TKR New Year, New Knee - Jan. 3, 2017<

@jaschembra

It sounds like you are doing great!! It seems really early for your doctor weaning you off painkillers. I'm glad mine refills them quickly and easily! I don't need as many as he prescribes, but it's good to have them just in case.

Jen

@KarriB thanks for the link. She did just show me the ottoman/chair one today and the lengthened stride. These will definitely help. How to measure with the hand, fingers, etc was really good to know. She comes again on Thur. Glad she only scheduled 2 days- I like the amount of exercise that I've been doing. :) Next week I will be back home and going to OT.

Oh yes, @UACats70 - I received it this morning (gotta love Amazon Prime) and tomorrow is my big day - shower. I can't wait. The PT did bring me a couple of water proof bandages as well. Haha I sat on my raised toilet seat today and shaved my legs - at least the parts I can see. Those little hospital wash tubs come in handy!!

@ACDCJen hi Jen, I kinda agree too, but I have Plan B in my back pocket. His standard script included Norco, which I filled, but I can't take for more than a couple of days (headache/nausea) I'll be on Tramadol with Tylenol. My plan is, during PT, if I need extra relief, I'll take one of the Norco occasionally (watching the amount of Tylenol. :)

I'm sure you've been told, but don't take pain killers before pt. They mask the pain and you'll do too much and pay for it later.

Paula is right, it's not a good idea to mask any pain you have during PT. Usually you end up paying for it that night or the next day, wondering what in the world happened. I stayed on my regular meds schedule so that when I went to PT I was instructed to do squats, I did one, felt the pain and said, "no more".

Last night for my lovely compression straps. I haven't minded wearing them except for taking them on and off.

I got a most treasured shower today!

The funny of my day: I was eating a couple crackers with peanut butter before my 7:00am medicine and a clump of peanut butter fell on my knee about 1/4 inch from the glue on my incision. I'm thankful I didn't have to wipe it off my glue

Oh, I'm so glad to see a fellow food dropper! I spill, splash, and throw my food all the time (it's a special talent)... My best was eating spaghetti on my couch that backed against an apartment wall. When I was finished, I took my dishes to the kitchen. On my way back, there was a piece of spaghetti with sauce stuck to the wall about a foot above where my head had been! :rotfl:

Two weeks today!
I know I'm doing well. I honestly believe that my porous implant has something to do with my ability to place 100% of my weight on this leg. I go back to my OS quote: don't get discouraged in PT if others are making circles around you. You will ache longer than a cemented implant
I also know I need to trust my new knee. But it does hurt pretty much when I'm putting full weight on it. My lengthening of my stride with the walker is definitely helping many things.

What I do know is - looking back - I'm a whole lot better than I was 1 week ago!!

It's great that you can see improvement already! How encouraging for those coming up behind you!

Hi Julie @jaschembra i just caught up on your thread glad your surgery went well and you are on the mend. I am 6 weeks post op no I am still taking Norco and Tylenol combo. Everyone is different my last knee I was only taking Tylenol by end of 8 weeks. This time this knee seems more achy and I had the tight band feeling which I didn't have last time. You mentioned about icing all night I do it all the time love it. I did it with my last knee and it really helps with pain management. Anyway you seem to be over the worst and just to echo everyone else don't worry about pt don't do it to often and don't worry about the bend etc it will come. Over doing just leads to pain and inflammation and longer recovery. Hang in there :tada:

@UACats70 My PT brought 2 waterproof bandages yesterday so I used one of those today instead. :) I'll let you know how it works when I use it.

Hi Julie, your incision looks great. Isn't it amazing that they can just glue it shut. I am glad that you can see that you are making progress. Just try to focus on that and it will help you to not get discouraged. Hopefully before you know it you will be able to walk on that leg without pain.

Thank you @Ronsgirl From what I've read from Josephine's education, there is a whole lot more that went on under that skin surface, however, I can only read so much because if I think about it, I wouldn't like it lol. I'm not a blood, pain, or needles kinda girl! Never could have been a nurse. Too much passing out. I told my mother that she still holds the record for smallest scar. Both of hers are only about 4 inches. I honestly thought mine would have been smaller, but it's not bad. My glue is holding strong. I don't see it coming off anytime soon.

Yes, I try and focus on that. I'm in for the long road. Went into this with those thoughts and will continue one day at a time.

@jaschembra, surprisingly, my scar is only about 4 inches, as well - your mom didn't happen to have her surgery in sunny St George, did she? I was all prepared for a battle scar to brag about....and all I got was this weenie line! :loll:
Seriously, I'm glad to hear you are doing well, and hope the pain pill saga continues to go uneventfully!

@L.I.T No, she was here in gloomy Missouri (during the winter). Her first was 10 years ago and it's 4 inches so when she went back this summer (age 83) she told the OS, she was holding him to a bet to make sure this new one didn't exceed the old one. :)
Thanks. Love the kitty picture.

Just catching up @jaschembra - took time off for my own surgery. It sounds like you have been really proactive with the meds and PT and really doing well in pain management and recovery. Love your scar - wish they had done the glue finish with me. Keep up the amazing progress!
