TKR New Year, New Knee - Jan. 3, 2017<

Julie, I hope you all make it through the storm unscathed. How are things going? I'm making little bits of forward progress every day The island I saw treating me well now. Hope your surviving the dark days, your smack in the middle of it now.

@mbrown No generator here at my temporary recovery house (my mom's). Although my sister was just saying that we probably need to gather her candles and find her flashlight in preparation.

Hi @Red's Mom Hope you and your baby/infant knees are enjoying the island! Today didn't seem like a dark day at all. I noticed some things like setting my foot on the floor and putting it into my slipper and standing would be like a 5-7, we'll today, it was more like a 3. Overall it was a good day!!

We are cutting 1 of the Percocet in half tonight so I will go from 4/day to 3 1/2 per day. I think there are 9 pills left after tomorrow- I don't plan on renewing that prescription and I don't think my OS would anyway. Stingy fella. One good thing with removing the Percocet, I can add in Tylenol. I think the Gabapentin is doing wonders as well

10 days post op and all is well!! PS: I added my Magnesium back into my nightly medicine and the fairy is visiting daily!

@mbrown turning out the lights and praying for the best! :)
Iced up and compression straps on. All is well in the neighborhood

Does anyone else sleep with their ice on all night? My machine is running all night and my sister restores the ice during the night

@jaschembra ... I'm concerned that you're trying to wean yourself off pain medications too soon. Please don't worry if you need to ask for a prescription renewal. If your surgeon does not want to renew the Percocet, then ask if he would prescribe a step down medication such as hydrocodone or even tramadol. I would be very surprised if just Tylenol will keep the pain at bay this early in recovery. Your GP might be able to help you with medications if your surgeon is not willing to. Proper pain management is critical to a successful recovery.

Hi @Jamie Thank you for your concern. I am on 100 mg Tramadol every 6 hours. Upon hospital checkout he sent me home with his standard protocol of Percocet and Norco. In the past, Norco has made me feel ill/headache which made me ask for Tramadol plus from reading on here all the folks who took it. But what I'm getting st is, I have a bottle of Norco, worst case scenario. We will see how it goes. Plus the Gabapentin is in a sense a pain med, and hydroxyzine (spelling bad) paomate. There is no way I could be on just Tylenol right now.

Julie, you can combine Tramadol with Tylenol. That combination worked well for me.

Josephine has created a couple of charts to illustrate how that regime goes. The first chart is for 4-hourly doses and the second one for 6-hourly.

The safe dose for Tylenol (paracetamol) is 4,000 mg in 24 hours. You need to check that none of your other medications contains Tylenol. If they do, factor that amount into your daily dosage calculations, so you stay within safe limits.

When the time comes to stop taking Tramadol, you will need to taper off it slowly.

@Celle Thank you for that. I knew it was on the site somewhere, but hadn't looked for it yet. This will be very helpful after the Percocet is finished. I have been adding up my Tylenol amounts as I've added them into my day. My sister has kept control of my meds. I think she was nervous that I would accidentally take something I shouldn't. She's the pharmacist in this house!

I had the pleasure of a hair wash in the sink this morning. Yeah! My PT was cancelled yesterday due to the ice but she was going to give me a couple of waterproof bandages. OS said not to get it wet until I see him at 4 weeks. I also have the cling wrap. Shower in the upcoming days will be wonderful.

I must wear these TED hose for 4 weeks. The problem I am running into is at night - they come up to about 2 inches onto my incision. I have used a bandage to cover the area at night so the TED can sit on the bandage. We are out of those, so I'm thinking of using a wash cloth over that lower couple of inches of incision so the TED can sit on it. I've haven't worn the TED on my surgical leg during the day as I have the compression pumps on and I do plenty of ankle pumps. My glue has started to peel at the top of my incision (where the most knee bend is). I know not to pick at it.

How long does a TKR incision take to be closed? 10-14 days?

When the day begins with the normal bodily function, you know it's going to be a very good day!

I had staples which were removed at two weeks and it was three before the incision was totally closed and steristrips were gone. I used cling wrap on my PICC line, be sure to double wrap it and if you have a hand held shower head it's helpful in keeping the water out of the cling wrap.

@jaschembra I hope you don't lose power!!! I bought a seal tight knee protector and never used it. I was allowed to shower day 2. Didn't realize I'd be allowed to do that.

Thanks for clarifying your meds. It sounds like you will be just fine then.

@UACats70 ha! Doesn't take much to get me shopping on Amazon - even while on my back, elevated and iced!!
My sealtight will arrive Monday. No need to hassle with cling Saran Wrap!! Thanks
:dancy:

Yeah Julie! It sounds like your on a good road. A shower, how luxurious Your sister sounds like a keeper! I still fall asleep with my ice machine on and Keith recharges it early in the AM. Sending best wishes and aloha...

Good Morning fellow BoneSmarties.

I experienced the beginning of the non-linear recovery yesterday. Yesterday, by the end of the day, I had experienced yet another new pain to add to the sensations experienced throughout the day...
Had a good nights sleep, waking at 1am and 4am for meds and woke up feeling good. I am ready for another day of healing, icing, elevating, taking short walks in the house, PT (she comes at 1) and I'm looking forward to entering my third week.

1 day away from 2 weeks.
PT measured my ROM: bend 95 and extension 7-8
The extension hasn't changed, except there is less pain. She did show me a couple of easy stretches that felt good and she showed me a better stride on the walker. All felt good.
