TKR New Year, New Knee - Jan. 3, 2017<

You go girl! I've only driven twice since Picchu. Today I drove to go snorkeling and I was so tired when I got back home I could barely get up the stairs. Snorkeled two hours though!

Today is my 3 week left kneeversary!!

I fixed my dog's breakfast this morning and it felt nice. I told hubby, don't throw away that gallon jug as it makes giving her water, easy! While doing this I had my FIRST recognition of mild discomfort and NO arthritis pain in my left knee. I think I had too much surgical pain/discomfort to feel the missing bone/bone pain. SO... if I get nothing more today or this week (and I find this highly unlikely), I will take that ah-ha moment and savor it!

By the way @Red's Mom Nancy - My "tiny little puppy's" back is level with this hospital bed. :) She loves having me back home and I am loving being home.

Time to move around a bit, then take a nap.

Happy 3 week kneeversary to you! It sounds like your "tiny little puppy" is about the size of mine. He is 85 pounds of little lap dog. He seems to realize that he can't sit in my recliner with me and just puts his paws in the chair beside me and snuggles up a bit then goes and sits with my husband and looks longingly over at me. I hope today is a very good day for you!

Getting back to some normal routine is so uplifting! Congrats!

@Ronsgirl Thanks Martha. She, Thunder, is a 148 lb. Cane Corso Mastiff (ears not cropped), fawn color. She knows that she is not a lap dog, but no leaning on mama right now either and no slobbering. And... mama must be cautious when walking through the kitchen if said dog has gotten a slurping drink of water!! We keep a mop in there just for her.

I'm getting much better with my cane today and have had the ice off for a few hours at a time (no ice = less pain).

@UACats70 I hope you may be getting a little relief with the rest, ice, and elevation.
Just wanted to let you know that I used the seal tight tonight for a shower and it worked perfectly. My leg was completely dry.

With so many people getting put on aspirin for the anti blood clot medication, @Jamie is there any concern with being on the NSAIDs for inflammation? I am taking 1- 325mg aspirin 2x a day. I was on Meloxicam then my OS switched me to Indomethacin and I'll probably go back to Meloxicam when this script is over since I have plenty of Meloxicam. I realize at some point the anti inflammatory medicine will be stopped and the aspirin stops in 2 1/2 more weeks for me (6 weeks total). I was just wondering since all the interaction warnings mention aspirin with these meds.

Obviously your doctor should know about everything you are taking and should make the final determination about what is best for you. But generally it is not wise to take multiple NSAIDs because of the risk for stomach or kidney issues. For most people, NSAIDs are not effective for post surgery inflammation and some studies actually indicate they could interfere with bone healing. The 325 dose of aspirin is common short term for anti-clotting medication.

If you were taking anti-inflammants for pre-suregery arthritis pain, you shouldn't need it at all after your TKR. However, many people with arthritic knees have other joints that give pain.

Just be sure to check with your GP if you feel you need an anti-inflammant once recovery is further along.

I take Meloxicam because I still have bone on bone arthritis in my thumb joints, and I also take aspirin as a blood thinner. I took both after my first knee, too, and haven't seemed to have any adverse reactions. I am curious as to why you are still having to wrap your knee to shower. I was allowed to take showers as soon as my staples were out. No tub baths until all the little scabs are gone, but showers are okay.

Your puppy makes my 85 pounder seem small. lol He has the same dribbling problem when he gets a drink of water. He is part Lab and part Pit Bull Terrior. We adopted him from the animal shelter. He is a perfect fit for our family. He loves everyone and never meets a stranger, kind of like my hubby:heehee: He makes me smile when I don't feel like smiling, and has been a big help to me getting through all this. He even came to see me twice while I was in rehab and met my therapist whom he acted like was a long lost friend.

@Ronsgirl I didn't have staples on the surface, only glue. My OS instructions were not to get it wet until I see him at 4 weeks post op (Feb. 3). My glue sure isn't going anywhere!! A couple weeks ago it peeled just a bit at the top and stopped before the incision. Nothing else has happened since. Of course the skin is drying around the edges and I'm sure it will be a peeling mess once it can start getting wet.

Thanks for the reply. I was just curious. We all have such different protocols.

@jaschembra, is this the first time you've had glue? How do you like it? This was the first time I had staples and they pulled just as bad as stitches. Does the glue pull?

@sistersinhim when you say pull, do you mean when they get removed or the pull as you bend the knee? I can't tell when I bend the knee if it's pulling or not. I think as some of the initial swelling left, the skin/glue kinda crinkled.

Yes, as I bent my knee, the staples and stitches would really pull painfully. I was wondering if the glue eliminated that. If so, I'll ask my OS if he'll do it the next surgery.

So... I'm a lifetime Weight Watcher who has been free since June 2016. You must weigh in within 2 lb of your goal 1 x per month (min). All that snacking (saltines and peanut butter) prior to taking meds had me concerned. Well, I'm just .8 above where I need to be!!! I emailed my OS a question about my glued incision today and said, PS, how much does my implant weigh? :) He wrote: I just put my model on the scale and it's 1 lb 13.2 oz So... I'd say I'm not doing too bad :). Wonder how much the bone weighed that he removed!!

Speaking of my glued incision. I asked him if it was ok that its all still in place. This glue is really on there. OS says, it's healed, feel free to peel it like you would a scab or sunburn. Um.... not to sure I want to do that, kinda grosses me out.

Lastly, I just have to share my PT visit.
First, I'm walking really good with the cane. Too afraid to try it outside yet, so I use the walker to/from and the cane while I'm there.
I ask him if he's going to measure or if he does that every time and he replies - I'm not really a numbers guy and would rather see that you're walking well and doing okay with your movement. I'm thinking, sounds good to me!
Then, I was looking at the exercise sheet he has for me and he says, see the reminder I have on there for myself- he has a big NO, circled. He said, that's his reminder NOT to push or pull me, my leg, etc. I'm giving him a high five!! He listened during out first meeting.
