Hi Cathy, thank you so much for posting that question. I am 2 1/2 weeks post op and my operated leg is definitely longer than my right. I thought it odd that when lying down or sitting they looked the same length, but when standing this was not the case. I also could not understand how a leg could just grow by an extra inch. your comments have made me understand that this is normal that I had definitely been compensating in the way that I was walking. Thank you all so much and happy healing, I have only just found the forum and it is really so helpful. God bless you all for sharing.

Hi soyoungforanewhip;

Welcome to BoneSmart, great that you have joined.

Perhaps you would like to start a thread of your own in the post side of the forum, and tell us a little more about yourself and that way other members can interact with you directly.

Once again great that you have joined.

LLD, quite often settles down with recovery..

Hi Cathy,
Just dropping by your thread to see how you are doing. Syracuse trip sounded great and glad you feel that turn in the corner!
Thanks for the tip on "Departures"...:)
Hope you are enjoying the New England autumn.
Hugs
Elle

New England autumn? Aw, now you are making me homesick. That is about the ONLY thing I miss. Living in Arizona up in
the mountains still doesn't have the changing of the seasons like New England does. I used to love riding the Kangamangus Highway up in New Hampshire looking at the foliage.

Hey gang, need some healing energy my way. [Bonesmart.org] New hip 3/7/12

Dang it all, (and dang is not the word I really want to use) I was having a really really good run there for a while, doing so well. Only 11 days after my oh so positive post and a few days ago things went downhill quick [Bonesmart.org] New hip 3/7/12 . Somehow I ended up doing something to my ever so tricky back. Was it trying the treadmill again??? Was it using the big exercise ball to try some core strengthening stuff??? Was it getting back to some other excercises??? Who in the heck knows, but even after the chiro on Friday, I can hardly even stand up straight. Makes me sooo mad :hissy: that after feeling so good I am so #{£%$ fragile and can be brought down so quick.

So today I spent some time posting on others threads then decided I should post on my own, the downs as well as the ups. It scares me when things like this happen and I, like many others, think " am I ever gonna be stable again"? So I had a good cry, got support from my spouse, took a pain pill and am laying on the couch watching football. We'll see how I feel in the a.m. Guess as I tell others, 1 day at a time. There, I feel just a little better already putting it out there ( just like I got done telling Diane to do).

Can't keep me down for too long ( I hope). :bicycle2:

Hey Cathy, you're getting more healing energy than you'll know what to do with, if I have anything to say about it!

Backs ARE tricky. So yeah, you twisted wrong, or you did an exercise you maybe shouldn't do, or you did something a shade too long. Question: do you keep an exercise journal or log? Something that allows you to look back and see if there are patterns, or if anything stands out as different? If not, maybe it would be useful.

A new day's coming....it really is.

Sharon

Hey Cathy,

I can so relate! Sorry for you and sending all the healing energy I can muster...our bodies will always tell us when to slow down in the most unfortunate ways. Some people seem to bounce right back from THRs but for those of us who don't it is such a physical, emotional and spiritual ride...kinda like a big, long roller coaster. Only problem is I want to get off and you can't get off a roller coaster until the ride is over. We can only stay on and go with it and try and get used to the ups and downs.

Off to do some deep breathing, it helps.

Peace.

((((Cathy))))) Drat (and other D words) Definitely sending you healing energies! Your "treatment plan" sounds spot on - maybe add a heating pad for a while? Or soak in the tub? Sure hope you are much much better by morning!

Hi Cathy

[Bonesmart.org] New hip 3/7/12 Poppet on her way from down under with energy and healing vibes.. You will bounce back, heat packs, pain meds, R&R for a day and I am sure it will settle.

Whew, that was intense. Started on Thursday and there was no relief, it just kept getting worse. Miserable all wknd, up half the night again last night and finally when i got up this a.m. i could stand up straight. Had another chiro this morn to make sure all aligned and a low key day but finally on the mend :ok: She thinks it was the core stuff I was doing. Kind of reminded me of a hula hoop move sitting on the big exercise ball. Guess I won't be going out to get a hoop any time soon Anniepops I was not terribly out of alignment today so it must have been more of a muscle thing. I really thought I did something bad. Funny how my mind totally plunged to the worst.

sharonslp good idea on the log, and no I do not keep one though Cardie has suggested it in the past and it is a good idea. Thanks and you were right, a new day came

Thanks deb, diane, and sandy too. Your healing energy got here and must have helped :console2:
Relieved and appreciative of all the support, cathy

Wonderul Cathy, so pleased for you.. Two steps back, one step forward... On and on we go!

NEW SHORT TERM PLAN
Since my body has barked at me big time and since after several days of being down I actually feel better than before being down, (a little tentative, but good) I am going to try to listen to the body and take a break from trying to force myself into new things and just stretch, walk or bike, things that have felt good. Especially since I want to feel really good to travel back to Syracuse on Sunday (going to see the Dali Lamma).

I guess it is not rocket science  and I will push myself again soon, but that fine line between what works and what doesn't is so so tricky isn't it? Ok, off to take a walk, cathy

Hi Cathy

Popped in to see how you were and gutted to hear you haven't been feeling great, although things have picked up I am sending some tartan healing vibes all the way from bonnie Scotland.
Walking is all I have been doing and since I have started driving my left knee Isn't hurting as much so I am putting that down to me using my excelorater in the car with my left leg and it getting more exercise and a bit stronger.
You take care Cathy keep safe.

Billy

Oh Cathy sorry to hear about your back troubles....I know where you are coming from on that one, had the same myself a couple of times recently and boy does it hurt, my PT thought it was because of the way I am walking...who knows why these things crop up, we are doing so many different exercises that sometimes we can't figure out what's helpng and whats not quite right for us.

I asked you on my thread about the ball exercise that perhaps done your back in and now I understand. I think I will give that one a miss now, I know I can swivel standing with the hoop but I'm sure doing it sitting down will not be good for me. Somehow it seems it will be far more stressful and concentrated on the hips than when standing.

Hoping you are all better for Sunday and your trip back to Syracuse.....

Take care...big hugs :friends:

Ann

I hear you--don't you get sick of being so fragile!!?? I've talked about feeling the same way and getting so frustrated.

Here you are an active, healthy person (who, BTW, looks considerably younger than your age!) and you are used to being active, but now it seems like you try to move in a good direction but get set back on your butt when you try. I swear we have to take things in such small baby steps while we are recovering from the hip replacement. So many other parts of the body are affected by the hip problem, surgery, and recovery. That's another reason my surgeon told me not to go after aggressive treatment of my back for at least the first 6 months--things just need time to heal and adjust to get to a new baseline. I feel your frustration coming through loud and clear, and I can sympathize with you big time.
I'm glad your back is easing up (Finally!! Doesn't sound like a pleasant few days).

It's exciting that you are going to be seeing the Dali Lamma!!!! I could make a joke and say "tell him I said hello (as in "Hello Dali!") but I won't --- but, look--I already did!! :-) Seriously, that should be a really fun time and very inspirational.

Take care. I find stretching to be the most important part of my recovery exercise regimen. Otherwise I tend to seize up so easily. I think that helps my back more than anything ... and then I use my IF machine too--that makes things feel better. You might want to look into getting one. It's called Inferential Stimulator. I got mine through a company called Empi. I found their website and called. Talked with Rich Hauge who took it from there.

Dorothy

Thanks Dorothy rider1960, you made me laugh out loud - here's one for you,
The Dali Lamma walks in to a pizza shop and says " make me one with everything"
[Bonesmart.org] New hip 3/7/12

...and that was such a good validation of how I feel, thank you soooo much. You DO know exactly how I feel.

Thanks Ann Anniepops and yes, I think you should avoid hula hooping on the ball haha, or at least that motion on the ball. I feel better today too so I will be ready for the drive this wknd. Thanks again for your support too.

Hi Cathy,

Wow, I'm sorry I am late to the thread about your back flare up! Hate it when that happens and you cannot figure out which of the dozen or so things you did that might have been the problem...

Seven months, keep it nice and easy still and remember to build in recuperation time from your activities. Even serious athletes factor in breaks and recuperation time in their training schedule -- Alex told me that once and I've taken it to heart! It is good that your back settled down after a few days and that the chiro was helpful in adjusting you.

Get that little journal going -- doesn't have to be anything fancy or with lengthy writings, just keep track of your activities. I write how long I biked what level it was set on -- same with the treadmill and then I do amount of weight and number of reps for the machines that I use when I lift. This helps to guide you for when you can make an incremental increase in something or add some new thing into the mix and will also help track your soreness (or DOMS - delayed onset muscle soreness).

How's your pelvic tilt doing? Does your chiro give you any input on how it seems from her perspective during adjustments?

Have an awesome time in Syracuse

Take care,
Cardie

Have fun in Syracuse.. Will you get to see Diane?
