THR My Christmas time recovery

I was wondering if anyone else has a bad knee on the operated hip and how you dealt with that. My knee was actually the first to go about 7 years ago. I have a torn meniscus and severe osteoarthritis. The hip came along several years later then surpassed the knee if my problem of walking. My knee would have spells where it didne bother me as much. Also it responded well to injections. Since I have had my surgery it has flared up worse than ever. I am in my cane most of the time and I’m finding my knee is causing most of the walking problems. They said at my checkup no injection til 6 weeks. I can’t take nsaids but can put topical Voltaren on it. It wasn’t bad before the surgery I’m not sure what happened. I cannot even think of a knee replacement for at least a year I have had a major surgery every year for the last three years. What we take for granted :(

@Sdfoxy1 unfortunately they really give us the what for when we have our THR so even if you didn't have existing knee issues you might still feel pain, swelling, etc.

I have arthritis in my right knee but not to the extent of needing replacement yet. It was screaming its head off prior to the surgery having to accommodate for the bad hip. After the initial first few weeks after THR it seemed to totally calm down. It still rears its ugly little head now and then though.

If you haven't already tried icing your knee, please do, worked wonders for me. Still does when it acts up now. I also use one of those pull on elastic knee bands at times when its hurting. Understand that this would probably not be good at this point but later if still having issues. I can't take NSAIDs either and didn't want to chance the Voltaren so I tend to use lots of Icee Hot, Bengay or Tiger Balm.

I see you said you're on your cane most of the time. This could be adding to the knee pain. You may want to consider using the walker for longer, may take pressure off your knee.

Guys I hate to ask a question every day. But yesterday I walked pretty pain free with my cane. Pain was prob just slight soreness today when I got up soreness was about 6 where it’s uncomfortable to walk with my cane. Is this normal.

No worries! Ask away, that's what were here for.
Is this normal.
I'd say yes, it is normal and common. Possibly you were more active yesterday, walked more, exercised more? Even if not, you are only seventeen days post op. You will struggle with some discomfort and pain. Rest, Ice and Elevate and back off from any exercises you're doing until it eases, then re-engage slowly.

I was wondering if anyone on here had to go back to a job where they walk, bend and stand all day after a posterior THR. If so how did it go for you. Thanks

When do you have to go back? That will likely determine how you handle walking, bending, standing all day. Are you able to sit at all?

Ideally, we recommend a phased return to work beginning at twelve weeks, but understand that is not an option for everyone. Read about it here -> Phased return to work
@Sdfoxy1

Yes I have 12 weeks. I work retail there is no sitting. I can go back at 5 hour days tho. I’m so sore I don’t know how soon I will be able to start working on my stamina. Not anytime soon for sure

Well, I am happy for you that you have twelve weeks off! Something that really helped me was the Activity Progression for THR. You can follow those guidelines as a rough gauge for the first eight weeks as you build strength and stamina. I found following it kept me comfortably mobile, without overdoing it. I only overdid it once and it was on the day I decided to get off the walker and over practiced with the cane. It took a full day of icing and rest the next day and I was back on track. Check it out and see what you think about following it. Activity progression for THRs

Happy New Year everyone. I have a question. This morning when I was walking I felt a painless popping up in my hip very close to where my hip used to pop. I know It shouldn’t be my new hip. I kept walking around trying to get it to stop. Lol. Had anyone had this ? Thanks

Very common - most hippies experience this in the early days of post op. The muscles, tendons and soft tissues were pushed aside to access the joint. They now need to firm up around the joint again. This sensation will fade with time.

Thank you Jaycey for always alleviating my fears. Happy New Year

No problem @Sdfoxy1 ! I've been down this road twice and know it can be a bit scary at times. That's why BoneSmart was created.

Happy New Year to you as well!

It sounds like you have all of the normal symptoms of THR recovery. I had popping and clicking in both hips post op. They both were from different movements, but both had them. If my math is right you're 3 weeks in on a long recovery period that can't be rushed. Stamina will come but it will take time and nutrition, our bodies need a lot to rebuild from the trauma of THR.
Are you icing? That helps no matter how far along in recovery, I would ice after walking and it helped with soreness. I never went back to work but if you can ease back with shorter days to start with it might help.

Hello everyone. Yesterday was three weeks. So far doing okay. I did notice something this morning I got I hadn’t noticed before. I don’t know if I just hadn’t paid attention before or if it’s a change. Around my incision which is about a foot long. It is red and swollen I mean in about a 8 inch diameter. It also feels hot. I don’t think it was like this before Any thoughts

Hello @Sdfoxy1
Since this is a new development and for your peace of mind, I think you should notify your surgeon's office today and see if they'll let you forward them a photo or two of what you described above. It's best to have it checked. Let us know what you hear.

I know everyone is different but could anyone give their experience when they did not feel extreme muscle soreness when walking after a posterior replacement. Thanks. Three weeks 3 days post po

Some days I am still waiting, other days it's all good.

I hope you have a call in to your OS about this....
I’m going to post a pic.
Not seeing it, but is it possible to ask if you can send one for your care team to look at?

Posterior or anterior.... I think at 3 weeks we all had quite significant muscle soreness...I sure did for months!
They do alot of disturbing that soft tissue to get our implants in...
I iced like a fiend whenever I was sitting so that helped alot!
