Quick update at 4:30 am - had about a 4-5 hour long stretch of sleep before lady next to me needed to use the washroom. Vitals are good but some comcern that IV isnt dripping very fast. By the way, if I didn't day it yesterday, don't worry, anybody, about the catheter, they put it in after I was numbed and I didn't feel anything, it isn't bothering me at all, and it's nice to not have any "pee pressure". Resting well.

I've been pretty itchy and now understand "log leg". Mostly all the thigh muscles have been pulled like a one sided workout. Very sore last night - cramping a bit, but better now. Doesn't hurt at all to do ankle pumps and I can do some leg slides to knee about 2 inches off bed. Biggest challenge is knowing how much I'm able to move the leg, and in which ways.

@MisFit1 - how are you this morning. Everybody scheduled for today: (sorry I'm a bit too groggy to successfully look you up and tag right now) but I know God knows and I'm praying for you. It'll be ok :)

Dang! They just removed my catheter! Oh well.

I am getting a bit annoyed that my morphine drip isn't functioning at the moment. Not so much because I'm hurting but because I need more sleep. I got about 5 hrs and feeling tired now. With the room and hospital waking up around me, I need sleepy stuff to drift off :(

Good morning @moms4tne ! It's hard to get rest in the hospital, isn't it? Nurses kept checking on me and taking vitals all night long. When are they going to let you go home? I have to stay another day because of low hemoglobin levels and low blood pressure. Anyway hope they can get your morphine drip working so you can get some rest!

@MsFit1. Good to see you!!! :) Yes, it is (usually) hard to get any rest in hospital, but I'm finding "the drip" is quite nice :) I was up earlier with the PTs for my first walk, and needed to sleep after. Napped most of the afternoon - feels good. I'm also having issues with low blood pressure (96/58 this morning) - OS has been saying I'll go home Thursday but they only allowed me up once today and I came close to fainting, so I guess I could get pushed back. Don't mind really, this is a wonderful hospital and the nurses are very good. Even the food is good. So we shall see. When are they talking about letting you go?

the low blood pressure occurrence is very very common.
I had it. Made the first standing a bit noodly/wobbly.
Low hemoglobin seems fairly common, too due to blood loss. Some require a transfusion.
Glad both are doing well. @moms4tne and @MsFit1 !

Blood pressure all over the board - just now it was 122/80. Nobody seems concerned so I won't be either. The biggest struggle I'm having now is getting out of the bed. I feel so uncoordinated and weak. Having to use my left side as my strong side is hard. I break out I. A sweat and I'm exhausted before I'm even on my feet. Anyway - that's my story and I'm sticking to it. How are @Dieter and @MsFit1 doin' tonight?

Surgery was 48 hours ago right now - seems like forever. I feel like I'm not progressing like I should, but I have to remind myself that 48 hours isn't that long. I understand " log leg" now, my operated leg is so heavy and it doesn't help that I have major bruising at the incision site. Nurses say I need to show the Dr - I may have a little hematoma. I think I should be icing, but what do I know? Sure hurts though when attempting to move, and interferes with PT because it's so painful. I'm a redhead - all my life medical professionals have said that means I'm a bleeder. I guess I also bruise easily. Sure hurts tho and, being overweight, too - really hard to get comfy on this bed. I was literally stuck to the mattress pad this morning. Finally they got me up to use the washroom and I'm more comfy now. Will post more later. Wishing all my other hippies this week a smooth day, and praying for @FionaW and @Machine who go in today.

Good morning! Yes, you're right - it's very early days, I would think much too early to be concerned about progressing as you 'should'. I don't think there is a 'should'. You'll recover in your own time. I know that I have to re-read my thread to remember what happened in the first few days after my operation. This first week is kind of a write off in a lot of ways, just recovering from major surgery, getting your meds straight, pressure settling down, getting your head around the whole event. Is there a reason you're not getting ice? I know that at my hospital in Kelowna, the physiotherapist didn't like for us to use ice all the time, but the nurses brought me ice when I asked for it. That would probably help your incision pain quite a lot. Cheer up my dear - MUCH better days ahead! Your horrible hip pain is gone, isn't it? I knew that would happen but I still felt surprised. I am 3.5 months out and sometimes I'm still surprised! I hope the rest of your recovery goes swimmingly. :)

@grandma chris thanks for the encouragement. The hip pain is gone, yes - but at this moment it's replaced by a whole lot of other pain and discomfort. I'm really shaky after physio today - got clammy and nauseous. Couldn't continue to sit in the chair for lunch like they wanted me to. I don't know. I'm feeling discouraged and dead tired

I'm very sorry that you're having these problems. I wish I had magic words to say to you and help you feel better, but of course I don't. I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks :)I don't want to be discouraging to anybody , but this PT is darn hard work.

As if trying to sleep on my back sans the morphine squirts from the previous two nights isn't hard enough, I've been awakened twice in the night (2:30 and 3:30) by the confounded alarm on one of my three roommates' IV drip, PLUS somebody else's TV is on AND the last nurse in here didn't shut my drape so the bathroom light is shining right in my eyes. I'm s'posed to go home tomorrow - I guess this is God's way of showing me I'm ready, even if I think I'm maybe not.

Well, the sun is up and it's a new day. Should be heading home today, so I hope it's a good day. Praying for @twodogs today. Hope surgery goes smoothly and recovery is swift.

@moms4tne I have been getting sweaty and nauseated when I get up and move around also. I think it's normal. I feel fine when I lay down again, so I haven't worried about it. I found the pt difficult too. I am still sore from it and it's been 24 hours. I think all that you are feeling is normal. I bet we'll be feeling more normal this time next week. I am a redhead too. Do you have hip dysplasia? When I research hip dysplasia, I see lot of pics of redheaded babies with the leg casts/braces on. I wonder if redheads are more prone to hip dysplasia.

@younghippie - no, I slipped on the ice several years ago and wet down in a "splits". Apparently the resulting labral tear robs the joint of the fluid that nourishes the cartiledge, so it all went away (i.e. Osteoarthritis). Because I was immigrating to Canada, I had to wait a long time - it's been almost 10 yrs since I fell - to have healthcare, so it got very bad.
Good news I am Day 4 post-op and home. Bad news is I am VERY weak and being on my back in bed has been absolutely punishing. My worst fears of not being able to get comfortable, or sleep/rest are being realized, and I'm really struggling. Had a minor meltdown tonight - feel a doosey coming on. Pain meds are helping I guess but not with the stiffness and soreness that sets in no matter how I try to get comfortable. The only time I don't hurt is standing on the crutches. Anybody have any suggestions? I hate to be a big baby, but my back muscles are seizing and I'm desperate for some relief. I need to sleep!

@moms4tne Sorry you are having a hard time getting rest. I was miserable when I first came home until I realized I could elevate my legs. I had my husband put pillows under both legs so that they were both elevated. Took the pressure off my hip, knee and my back. Maybe that would help?

@younghippie Yes, I did finally ask hubby to put a pillow under my knee on my operated side. Although I'm not sure it's strictly allowed, my knee took quite a beating during surgery, too, and it was swelled up to twice normal size. On my back with it extended flat, it felt painfully hyper-extended. Something else I've been getting is all these little "electrical zaps"(for lack of a better term) along the length of my operated leg. Has anybody else experienced that? Kinda like RLS, but more painful.

If you are having RLS type symptoms your pain is not in control. Are you taking the prescribed meds around the clock?

Back sleeping is tough if you haven't done it before. Pillow under the knees helps reduce the pressure on your lower spine. Don't fight the sleep thing - nap during the day when you can. Read this thread again Sleep deprivation is pretty much inevitable - but what causes it?
