Mojo2013 recovery thread

Day 18 and still feeling pretty good. Did a nice walk with my husband and the dog yesterday. Our weather is finally nice so it was great to be outside. A mental uplift!

Two short trips outside today via uber, punctuated by an afternoon nap. No pain involved, but now I'm beat. And I also feel like somebody stuffed my glutes with tissue paper. A little stiff.

As always, it's much better than the pre surgical pain so no complaints here.

Sounds like a good day any day walking or being with my pets rock. I'm so glad you had a nice day ..stiff no....but nice weather YES

Hi Emma, how did PT go for you today?

Hi all! First outpatient PT today. I liked the therapist, although I think he's going to make me work hard. None of the exercises were too crazy though. There was one exercise I didn't want to do, mostly because in didn't think I could even do it, and he respected that decision. He said ok we will just work toward that. Some old, and a few new movements that caused a little stiffness. We will see how it affects me come tomorrow.

After a couple of active days I'm pretty beat. I think tomorrow will be a nice rest day for me.

GrannyC, how you feeling?

Sounds good for you too... YAY us...
Lol both of us had first PT today . I'm not gonna rest too much tomorrow but they say it will be mid 80s sooooo maybe as that's hot here this early in the season

Mojo.....just remember that you don't need a lot of therapy to recover a hip. Walking is best and even that should be done in moderation. Remember you have the right to be in charge of your therapy. No one should "make you work hard." If you have any pain or stiffness (a form of pain) during or the day following a session, it means you're doing too much.

It sounds like your recovery is going great. Congratulations on your new hip!

Glad you had a good experience at PT. If I decide to go next week at the earliest to a new PT considering the other ones were horrid...I will ask them specific questions about their philosophy on bilateral THR. Hope it keeps getting better every day.

@Jamie I hear you about the PT. I think when I say he will make me work hard I mean he will encourage me to do the very best I can at any given time.

The increase in stiffness I feel around the incision and glutes seems to be related the scar tissue there, and PT recommended some very gentle self massage around that area. It felt really really good.

Is that normal to feel more of the scar tissue at this time (almost 3 weeks out), or does it mean I'm working too hard?

You're not even a month out from your surgery yet, so it is possible that the tightness you're feeling is from overdoing things a bit. Tell me what your average day looks like in terms of exercise and activity balanced with rest and icing/elevation and I may be able to tell you more. The massaging of the scar is fine and if it helps, continue with it.

Thanks @Jamie . Average day is, sleep in, get up and make breakfast (smoothie, so super easy), shower & dress, take a walk or do home exercises, rest, lunch (either ordered or takeout). Lots of TV watching, back and forth around the house. A few minor chores here and there, like putting things away or helping with dinner prep (husband does most of the work). PT if scheduled. On the weekend I went to church (1 hr service, back and forth in Uber) and a couple of meetings (similar length and transportation).

I'm so glad to hear the massage is OK! It feels great. I actually bought a tool I can use with little roller balls on it. Wonderful on the tight muscles.

Strange as it may seem to you, you actually are doing quite a lot for this early stage of recovery. If you continue to experience the tightness you describe, I'd cut back to doing one thing a day (short walk OR therapy), no outings or meetings and no home chores unless they are absolutely necessary. Also, go easy on that roller device. You actually would be better off right now just using your hands gently.

Busy Lady for less than a month out.
Strange as it may seem a day of rest might help all those aches a lot.
Going Good though.
Joe........

I'm going bonkers and need a little socialization! Today will be a rest day for sure.

Sometimes the social contact seems a fair trade for a few aches and pain...

Plan a social day followed by a rest day. Pretty soon the rest days will get shorter and shorter.

Emma like you I NEED the social contact and to do and get out not to crazy excess but like we are I think we both have a pretty good balance of rest and non rest. When you walk do you do it outside? I don't as I live in the country no sidewalk etc so I mega walk my house and if we are out and it's paved where we are I walk a bit there.... I'm going crazy not enough human contact and stuff to do it's 84 here and I have no real plans but will soon do something

@MyAussieGirl I do go outside and usually walk around the block just to get some sunshine. Spent all day today inside though to try and get ahead of the stiffness, especially since I have PT early tomorrow morning. Also, it is super windy here so I'll wait for that to change before I venture back out so I don't get knocked down. Just a couple of trips down to the building lobby, once to buy breakfast cereal and once to get mail. Super tired today.

Emma, it sounds like you are doing well. I wonder if the stiffness is from too much PT?? Josephine keeps saying we don't need the PT to heal so I asked her if I would get my range of motion back without the PT and she said I would. Very interesting. I didn't do much at my first PT on Monday but I got tired even from that little bit but not sore. I was supposed to go today but it got cancelled as pt's little boy broke his arm so she had to take him to hospital. Thankfully I don't go back until Monday.

I have finally been able to do some reading and actually finished one book already and have started on the second one. It is a good way to pass the time rather than watching tv.

Emma Emma don't end up blowing to KS it was hot and windy here humid but it's going to go down tonight and stay down 30 degrees I'd rather do 73 right now kind of in the middle... I took a ride with hubby...he helped me crazy 3/4 shower but man it feels good sooo good as I was sweating like a hog switching out my winter fall clothes to summer.

Yeeeze I got lots of stuff...then to shower now I'm resting bored but can't really walk another inch lol.... I also practiced my cane and wishing you well on PT I go Monday

Day 23! 3 weeks and 2 days. After a rest day yesterday, feeling much better and less tired today. Had PT this morning. Still going well. Nothing too intense. Transitioning to cane, gait training, etc.

My husband is gone overnight to our niece's graduation in upstate NY. So, dog had to go to boarding because I can't do all his care without the husband. Will be a little bit of an empty and lonely house today.

Temps are so crazy here. It has now gone from the 80s back down to the low 40s.

LOL on not blowing away @MyAussieGirl !

@GrannyC I'm finally getting around to reading. Brain feels a little more intact.

How's everyone doing today?

Emma
