THR Mayhip8's recovery thread

Maybe we could attach Pom poms to walking sticks ( remember I am vertically challenged ) so rather than having someone on our shoulders or us on theirs we get the additional height from the stick! So here we go gentle lean to the left, gentle lean to the right, stand up , sit down, keep the leg extended, ice, ice, ice!! Go hipsters!

Ari now messing up the living room so I have a few minutes. I love real wood too. We have a dining table of old recycled barn wood on the top -- I bet that could tell a story. It is blessedly imperfect so any small imperfections we inflict are not noticed.
I was just a little taller on one side but that new hip settled in and now I'm back to my shrimpy height -- 5'4" used to be 5'5". He's promised to keep me evened out with this next one.
I've been on one cruise in my life and that to the Carribean the food was good and there was so much of it!
The public pools were a mainstay for me and my friends in the summer --was an avid swimmer.
I was told by my OS that every time I get any dental work done even a cleaning I need to take something-- a big load of antibiotic, a one time dose. A hippy friend of mine told me always take it with food it tears up your stomach. Hmm more good news:bored:. So my next cleaning appointment was made for Decmber 5th. Had to be at least 3 months out from surgery! I drink so much coffee and tea-- I will have to buy tooth whitener.
Well I await with baited breath for @Mayhip8 surgery date. @ChrissyW you and @Calgal may be shaking those pompoms for some time to come:yes:

@ChrissyW @ahipgma @Calgal fab cheerleading there !!!! Loving the colours -is that to the tune of "Titanium" or 'Silver lady ?"

No swimming for me today as we need a canoe to get out here! :kayak:Such is the rain ( not quite that bad but nearly ) I still feel a bit worried about slipping on wet ground- how strange? - might opt for a relaxing bath instead :bath:
Today was unexpectedly busy with one thing or another
The hospital rang and gave me a date 13th for signing consent form and 14th for bloods and pre-op - no date as yet for surgery.
I spoke to my boss and HR and arranged phased return for 20th so I'm on Al from tomorrow.. Feel a bit sad that I had no holiday as such booked - still - this time next year when I'm all mended we can have a proper holiday ( might sneak a cheeky weekend if I can )
I have a vague dental ache ? irritated crown ( the one that fell out with toffee ) I looked on NICE guidelines and its up to dentist/ patient and possibly consultant if Antibiotics are required- they seem to indicate that they're not necessary anymore after reviewing studies in the past - however I suppose your dentist might be able to offer advice ? I'm going to see how mine goes but not let it get too bad because obviously I don't need toothache or a problem with my teeth either following or before surgery. I don't know !! If it's not one thing it's another.

I'm 178 Cm again ( went down to 175 !) not sure if that's because I couldn't straighten up properly ? I should imagine I'll stay at that now - no need to alter my trousers then :heehee:
Teenagers a calling me so I'll pop away now
Stay safe and well my lovelies :loveshwr::roseshwr: back soon

Good afternoon
Golly ! It's horrid weather ! @ChrissyW @ Calgal are you affected by the torrential rain?
We have heavy local flooding, my kitchen has sprung a leak ! I have water I ingressing via a flue in the boiler - My mother in laws cellars have flooded and she's got no power - hubby and children are round there now sorting out services. She's 89 and sprightly but it's obviousLy not good.
So all in all its a wet start to my Annual Leave- I've cleaned the house and found a place for the bookshelf which means everything else got shuffled and moved about . I too have a big old table in our dining room- it's marked and stained ( but clean!!) and tells so many stories . There's a song by 'The beautiful South 'called ' The Table' which describes ours down to a T . My favourite time is when it's filled with freinds and family eating, drinking, playing games, doing puzzles, chatting and putting the world to rights ! Many happy memories .
@ChrissyW how are you settling back on land ?
@ahipgma how are you feeling today ? You Have a busy week this week
I can't quite believe it's 12 weeks today since my Op! I can't wait to get rid of this horrid pain in my right hip. - not long now though( hopefully!)
Have a safe and dry evening ladies :loveshwr:

Hi ladies:wave:. As much as I'm Yorkshire and right on the border between north and West Yorkshire we have been blessed and lucky to have escaped the floods. Some places of North Yorkshire are devastated by the flooding. It has rained heavily, especially yesterday evening when the water was running down the road like a river but fingers crossed and touch all that wood we have the house has stayed dry. We too had issues the last round if flooding a couple of years ago and had water running down the void in the brickwork and in to the kitchen resulting in new kitchen ceiling and new roof!! Hope your mopping up ok and they your mother in law has services restored @Mayhip8 . Just need to see now how @Calgal is doing. Perhaps we all need to pop over the pond and dry off with @ahipgma , what do you think? We could practice our cheer with our planned audience as long as they promise not to laugh as we are still in rehearsal stage.:dancy::happydance::spin::egypdance:( we must incorporate some of these moves!)
I've got my land legs back but we've booked another shirt get away at the end of August. It's naughty, I know, but travel last year was limited and even when we did go away I struggled. I don't know about the rest of you but did you feel less inclined to go out socially when you were struggling to walk (though I know you still have hip #2 issues @Mayhip8 and @ahipgma ). My limp was very pronounced and I was very conscious of it so preferred to stay at home.
Sleep patterns still seem sporadic and last night I was fully awake a 3.15. It's not pain and I'm still taking the herbal sleep tabs. Are you all back in regular patterns at all? I'm going to pop off now and watch another episode of big little lies and I can honestly say I'm enjoying series 2 as much as 1 though I'd read the book years ago and I still think the book was better. I always struggle with character appearances I have created from books when they differ on screen, biggest disappointment was interview with a vampire characters having read the book as a teenager. Tom cruise did it no favours!!:tantrum2:
:loveshwr:

Oh goodness hope all will be safe in the rain! Be careful with puddles, and no falls:no-fin:. We have had flash floods in our hilly city where the hills have slid, and little creeks and runs have overflowed -- sometimes you think water is almost as dangerous as fire. The city officials are promoting this saying " turn around dont drown" to people who are thinking of driving thru a flooding road. We drove Ari home her 80 miles last night and on the way back we had torrential rain, pitch dark and on top of it a mist was coming up! My hub drove us down so I was driving back I was a nervous wreck because I have a little bit of cataracts starting and night rain is not my friend! Made it home and almost kissed the driveway. Whew!
We are needed to watch Ari again sat- Tue coming up so these few days are busy, had preop testing today and preop physical tomorrow.
@mayhip is there a chance we may both go at the same time? I think it might be a blessing just to be told and then just go right away instead of knowing months in advance! What is an annual leave? Will it give you time to recuperate?
Certain pieces of furniture have wonderful memories attached like your table in fact the house my 88 year old mom lives in has welcomed 5 generations of my family to one house! I hope someone in my family keeps it.
@ChrissyW I used to limp all over the hospital with even my patients asking what's wrong. I don't know if I would say I was self conscious about my limp but kind of sad to say many nurses in my age group limp at work from knees ,hips, and back, even, beat up partly from what we do. I am determined to really work on it after hip#2 is done, heel toe walking!
Sleep? Still all over the place! I have to confess part of it is old age trips to the loo and our personal female summer type flashes waking me!
Having takeout pizza tonight, after I clean my bathroom. Big excitement!
Stay safe and dry
:loveshwr: and:friends:

@ChrissyW and @Mayhip8 glad to hear that you are realtively safe and dry. We're very waterlogged but fine down here in Worcestershire. Spent the afternoon tying up my tomato plants. They are now above their stakes. Got just a few ripening but tons on the way. Salsa canning soon!

Wouldn't it be funny if @ahipgma and @Mayhip8 had their ops same day/ week? They could be twin hipsters again! Troubles shared troubles halved. :friends:

Hope everyone stays safe with all this crazy weather! :thumb:

My favourite time is when it's filled with freinds and family eating, drinking, playing games, doing puzzles, chatting and putting the world to rights ! Many happy memories .

There is a beautiful Italian saying that translates as 'you never age at the dinner table'. My favourite. I'm going to have it made up as wall words and plan to put it on our dining room wall. :)

@Calgal i wonder if that's a northern Italian saying we have something far less romantic in the south based around the silence that suddenly happens around the table when people are eating a good meal 'quando mangia si combatte con la morte' which unromantically translates when you eat you fight death!! It really means you appreciate each mouthful of food rather than being distracted by people. I love sayings people have specific to particular areas, we seem to have our own language in Yorkshire dialect and sayings people use, my grans favourite used to be 'never cast a clout til may is out' and I think of it every may when we have those odd hot days ( I shall leave you guessing the meaning as brain teaser of the day)
It would be good if both you @Mayhip8 and you @ahipgma had surgery #2 around the same day, if not the same day. It would be a bit like deja vu but would make our virtual vacations possible again and simplify the cheerleading (@Mayhip8 i think the music of titanium works and we could incorporate the line she uses 'I am titanium' or what about 'ice ice baby' by vanilla ice ' stand up slowly, sit down slowly, leg extended ice, ice, ice. Shake it left, shake it right, elevate, ice, ice ice baby yeah':yahoo::yahoo::ice::ice::ice:

'A tavola non si invecchia mai' @ChrissyW don't know where it originated but I have it on a little tray from Deruta so perhaps a Tuscan version? The southerners are so pleasantly straightforward though! :)

Whenever mayhip and ahipgma go for their seconds we'll be ready to cheer!

Oh ! @ChrissyW @Calgal I love the Italian sayings you described :roseshwr:
I can see in my minds eye large families sat a length the tables loaded with meats and cheeses and wine and papas and Nonnas and babies and children chattering and yabbering then momma brings out the lasagna ( which is almost as good as mine :loll:) Then all,of a sudden silence ensues and all that can be heard is the gentle appreciation and murmuring of deliciousness being eaten.
In Wales when we ate as a family there was an unwritten rule that we had to be silent and ate impeccably with our cutlery and chewed our food and took our time - in reverence to the food God had provided ( much like a monastery or convents silence) It was stressful and relevant in its day I suppose but nowadays give me people, hands(clean!!), chatter, tearing and sharing of breads good manners or ' just good enough' , laughter appreciation and joining in with the cooking and clearing up. Then a jolly good sing song ! ( And more lubrication for the larynx)
On that note I dash off as my freind has just arrived for coffee!
Probably better get dressed then:heehee:
Love to all
See you later lovelies :flwrysmile::loveshwr:

Back now !

It would be good if @ahipgma and I had surgery on the same day! Hipsisters would become HIptwins!
Should we stay on the recovery thread or move over to the "In waiting" thread ?
I'm loving the cheerleading idea and 'ice ice baby' made me chuckle out loud!!!
In answer to your question recently about sleep @ChrissyW - I rarely get more than 2 hours at a time  I wake in pain or need a wee or my hip is stuck so I have to walk about . I go into my nest around 21.00 if not earlier because I can't sit down for more than a few hours and take paracetamol X1and zapain X 1 and try to settle to sleep around midnight but often it's gone 1.30 then I wake every 90 mins or so - This morning I did take paracetamol at 04 00 and slept till 07.45
I'm trying to get tired physically as I'm mentally tired ( lack of sleep and frustration I suppose ) so am doing lots of physical work in fact last night I was so ' energetic' but couldn't work off the adrenaline by walking ( because of flooding locally) I'd have loved to jump on a bike or into a pool and get my heart rate up with excertion but didn't ..in truth I'd done a lot of stair climbing yesterday so my legs were sore and aching! I feel quite teary really and am sure it's because of the recent events - in the past I'd get myself moving and the endorphins flowing - I'm sure this too shall pass
Perhaps I'll jog to @Calgal to pick up some tomatoes and run over to @ahipgma for the basil and we'll al meet up and have a delish salad?!
Water and weather permitting ...
I hope the waters settle for us all - stay safe, stay upright!
:loveshwr::flwrysmile:

Hello to all!
Just had my physical and I'm pronounced clear for surgery! My PCP said that my cholesterol is good so afterward I'm here at a coffee shop to celebrate with a big coffee and a scone!:umm:
My hub is 100% Italian and when my MIL was alive boy, could she cook and bake.
When she passed my husband and I were going through her things and he saw me frantically hunting for something-- money? Jewels? Was hunting for her packet of recipes! Cooking and eating as a family is a great joy @Mayhip8 , and we are informal as you like, no phones allowed at the table. That's a whole new battle to fight as when my kids were small we had no cell phones.
We put off a 30th anniversary trip to Italy
Because of my surgeries but have rescheduled for late April early May of 2020. We will be going to Venice, Florence, Assissi, Positano and Rome, hopefully Ms. Bionic hips here can do it!! Stayed briefly in Italy in the 80s and loved it.
I should have gotten on Bonesmart at 2am this morning when I couldn't sleep.
I finally gave up and broke a Tramadol in half and was asleep soon after.
My sleep is all over the place too.
At my docs appointment this AM I told her I still had pain in my new hip and she seemed surprised. It's much more muscle stiffness and soft tissue pain . The joint and groin feel fine. I can feel pain when I press along my scar. It does get a little better every day and i can say on this my 3 month anniversary that i have no regrets-- but never mind this left leg!
It's getting worse by the day! But I find that when surgery is within 2 or three weeks then the time just flies by.
So get your pompoms ready @ChrissyW and @Calgal.:dubious:
Hope all are safe and dry! Weather here supposed to be beautiful all weekend except for hurricane Ari arriving Saturday!:heehee:

Hello my lovelies. I wonder if they removed. Part of the sleep gene with our dodgy hips? @Mayhip8 my sympathies go out to you as you described where I've been but as you say many times stay positive and you have a wonderful support network in your family, friends and us hippy sisters. :friends::loveshwr::loveshwr:
I think we should have a virtual big family meal with all of us and our broods, each bringing something to the table (a very Italian thing) the tomatoes and basil would go well with some mozzarella and we can make a lovely caprese salad and if there are enough tomatoes we could make a light, fresh sauce for an arrabiata with spaghetti or to fill your wonderful lasagne @Mayhip8 . So, do you all like tiramisu? It is my signature, Go to dessert if we're having people over. I rarely cook Italian now, except on special occasions as I always eat too much of it, make way too much too and also then over eat the left overs so it's easier to reserve the tradition for those special times. What could each of you bring (and @Mayhip8 your lasagne would go without saying so what else is a soeciality for our table?) now what else shall I prepare?:chinstroke:
In the real world it's chilli chicken and rice noodles for tea, with a home made fruit salad (soaked in creme de griotte to add a little luxury). No where nearly as exciting as an Italian feast:umm:

Great news about being cleared for surgery @ahipgma :yay:
My scar is still painful and numb in places too and itchy! I think it's fine and part of healing process . I feel your pain in your other hip - mines bloomin horrid recently- I wonder if I've noticed it more because I don't feel it in my left now? looking at my x-ray I see osteocytes and it's mainly impinged with no space in most of the acetabulum - ouch ! Here's to being mended soon :fingersx:
I'm looking forward to our virtual big family meal @ChrissyW
I shall bring, in addition to my world famous delightful best ever yummy lasagna, home made minestrone soup, linguine dressed with lemon, peas and prawns, and a huuuugeeeeee appetite!!! ( I'll even join you in virtually eating the leftover leftovers :heehee: ( whenever I make potato salad I have to make more than I need because I eat most of it whilst I'm making it and whilst it waiting for the party/meal to bring it out and serve ) I really should find some willpower from somewhere :rotfl:
In reality tonight's food is homemade chicken and summer vegetable soup
Dessert will be - I have no idea!!!
I've just got a few minutes whilst I'm waiting for my daughter to come home from having her ears pierced, a very belated birthday present from last year as she needs to have six weeks to heal and the school has a no ear-ring policy. (Bless her she's been very patient in fact it's her birthday again at the beginning of the new term.)
So I shall go and prepare the virtual food my lovelies and look forward to meeting you virtually soon!
:yahoo::flwrysmile:

Just thought I'd add my scar feels fine but there are a couple of tender places around it which I'm presuming is muscular. What is weird is the butt cheek tennis ball feeling. Still can't say I'm used to it and still pop my hand under to see if I'm sat on anything! Does anyone like aubergines as I could do a traditional melenzana parmigiana to throw in to the mix. I'm getting hungry!

What a wonderful idea! I'm already in for the caprese salad. We'd better make it buffet style so we can go back and forth for more and different samplings. Hmmm, my hub makes killer biscotti every Christmas and not just the anise kind, double chocolate, one with dried cherries that have been soaked in kitsch first, praline almond... just to put out with your tiramisu, @ChrissyW ! Loved the eggplant (aubergine?) parm my MIL used to make very excited for that!!! What kind of entertainment will we have ?we'll give you and your pompoms the evening off. What should we wear?
I say stretchy pants with elastic:heehee: whoops gotta go get my roots done . Later you chefs!

Ladies I think we can do casual and loose ( and if not waist bands can be open). We definetly have enough tables but al fresco dining will be lovely. You are right @ahipgma about eggplant being aubergine and I love it the next day too, cold and in 2 slices of thick, sourdough bread (of any bread available if I'm being really honest!). The biscotti sound wonderful. My mum would make them with walnuts and lemon peel for new year so I'm up for trying all your varieties. I think buffet style will be wonderful, some zucchini fritti (fried courgettes) sprinkled with sea salt are always good to nibble on too. I can do various types of pasta sauce but I'm not great with proteins, though the hubby does a good steak so we could put him to good use seeing as we are doing a big family do, so I'm loving the fact we all have different talents as cooks. I have no idea regarding entertainment but I'm glad @Calgal and I have the night off from Pom Pom shaking. Maybe Andrea Boccelli or il divo could come and serenade us all although?
Ps I'll bring the limoncello for after the meal and we could have aperol cocktails before the meal to get the juices flowing! Oooh I'm excited:happydance:

My scar is still painful and numb in places too and itchy! I think it's fine and part of healing process . I feel your pain in your other hip - mines bloomin horrid recently-

I'm relieved (but of course still sad) to hear that you and @ahipgma still have tender scars, at several weeks ahead of me. Me too, and I think my husband doesn't really understand why I'm still sensitive. I still have pain when trying to walk without any aids, again not in hip per se but stiffness in front thigh muscle. Feeling sorta down about it today but you two make me realize that it's not so simple to walk without any pains for quite some time yet.

Do you think perhaps our crazy weather is adding to your other hips pain? Low pressure systems, just a thought.

Wishing you a smooth wait for hip #2.
