@kfenn

The surgeon at NYU are wonderful. Dr lamont did my surgery we spoke almost daily basis for first two weeks before I started my OP therapy. I email him at 3 in the morning first night home because I had allergic reactions to oxycodone. By 5 am he called me back and at 7 am he submitted Prescription for my medication. Don't feel bad, they care about their patient. This is what they do for living. Narcotic withdrawal is pain in the a$$. Sooner you switch to tylenol better you're off.

Sooner you switch to tylenol better you're off.
There are many other alternatives to the heavy duty pain meds. But please see speak to your surgeon or family doctor before changing you medication.

I have been taking 5 mg of Oxycodone every 4 hrs religiously.
Tylenol will not be an option for me die to a sensitivity I have to it. Maybe Ibuprofen at some point.
What is the typical thought on laying on your stomach?? I have been on my backside or back.

I might play it safe on the stomach laying, the problem is getting into that position without twisting the hip too much. I am a stomach sleeper too though so I definitely switched back to that position after consulting my doc about it a couple months later. :thumb:

Did your surgeon give you restrictions? If you are on a 90 degree restrictions you should not sleep on your stomach - usually for the first 6 weeks.

I had no restrictions after my surgery. I was sleeping on my operated after 10 days. That's when I actually could turn to my right. Next Monday will be 12 weeks since surgery and my thigh still Twinkles. No bruises or anything but tight. The incision area is rough. Groin area Is stiff. Turning hip inward and outward can be challenging at times. Have you started therapy yet? Make sure you do research before choosing one. It makes a difference. In regards to oxycodone freaking constipation and nightmares were horrible. Hot flashes are side effects. Any over the counter painkillers max you can consume is 4000 mg per day. Two pills every 8 hours was my first step in regards to laying off oxy.

@Was_86
I am beginning to understand the Oxy cycle. The side effects are draining and uncomfortable to put it mildly. Prune juice has given me some relief. What were some things about PT that you were concerned with? What was helpful for you? I am expecting massage and other manipulation. I have been limping for 3 years, I assume I have extensive imbalances. I work in a gym everyday and teach foundation movements and also qualitative assessments. I do not want my PT to only include movement quality and resistance. I hope to look forward to PT, not the opposite. What is your thought with your procedure? Can you sprint at 12 weeks?
When I have my 2nd, I hope to stay at the hospital closer to 72 hours. This time it was 45 hours on the release. I will also plan 4-6 days in a convalescent/rehab center. This process is very difficult under any circumstances.having pros help with the rehab makes much more sense.

What's your recovery plan? Are you having home therapy or going straight to outpatient therapy? Also are you having a nurse visit you as well? I would recommend any place that is affiliated with NYU. If not any place where the therapist gives you full attention. Not a big fan of places where you end up with an assistant showing how to do the exercises. You will be fine. After my surgery I has zero restrictions. Around week 4 I was in the gym training alone. I didn't do any leg workout without any supervision until I saw my surgeon after 6 weeks.

By the way Are you using a walker right now or did you went straight to clutches? First goal should be graduating to a cane. Getting your grit properly fixed. Getting rid off that limp should be your priority. Don't stress about weight etc. Your OT will tell you when you're ready for heavy stuff. I had no problems doing any exercises once i realized i have a brand new hip. It's not been a week since your surgery still the early days. First two weeks are the hardest. Walking like a snail is very annoying. Take it easy. Ice and elevate.

I woke up this morning a new person! Last night i perspired through 2 drop mats And two different shirts. I feel great!! I was ready to stand up and walk this morning. Luckily i have bonesmart to educate me about the process.
I dont have many specifics today. Just a stronger understanding of what my process is about.
I have PT twice next week, and will at that point decide on out-patient PT. I believe i found a PT who specializes in soft tissue manipulation. Im gonna need to be stretched and massaged.
Oh, and my sister who is an lpn is removing the dressing tonight! I am anxious to see the incision.
The PT was really impressed with my legs ability to abduct. I explained how the gluteus medius is not touched in the procedure.
I feel like i am progressing at the correct pace, and I am extremely excited to celebrate progression. Like so many it has been too long waiting for this.
I look forward to responses on anything, i love talking about how my hip is improving and the efforts and insight that were apart of the process.

So glad you are starting to see the benefits of this great surgery. Good luck with your PT. Let us know how it goes.

:walking: I successfully walked the length of the kitchen counter during PT unassisted. I cant believe how "STURDY" my hip feels. My quads are a whole other story. They need work. We are planning a family walk tomorrow outside!!!
Thank you @Jaycey !!

Got my first look at the incision this evening. Not as big as i imaginied. I do have a question regarding the dressing. My sister helped to remove it, got to the bottom, and it became painful, it actually started to tear the skin in a place. I looked in my discharge papers for a description, but did not find one. I was told i could shower with it, and when it was peeled back this morning by the visiting nurse, it snuggly refastened to my skin. The nurse said it had a quality that allowed it to reattach based on my body heat??? Does that sound familiar? Until i find more info, any insight in regards to removing the bandage?

@Poppet @Josephine

@kfenn i have what the nurse referred to,as a gigantic overpriced bandaid on my incision. I was to check under it daily but not change it for seven days. I changed it today, and my incision looks great. I just have glue and steristrips. The bandage was a Mephlix or something like that.
My PT is going slowly. I felt like the group PT at the hospital was sort of a mess. I would have found one on one with someone more helpful. Instead, I felt like I was on some bizarre rendition of The Biggest Loser. One man appeared to barely be awake as his daughter nagged him to do one more heel slide. I don't think he even did one. It was way too much way too fast. My individual time with my PT has been far more helpful.
I'm definitely on a downward swing emotionally right now. I'm feeling lonely and smothered by my mom. I'm staying at her place for a week or so. Anyway, I need some light to keep me from thinking about how miserable I feel right now.
I'm glad to hear you're doing so well. I don't have the energy to climb that mountain right now

@LibraryLynn I wish i had a magical phrase to pass on to you.
I do know that narcotics significantly alter your mood and perception. So blame the meds.
I just lay in bed, all day and all night, and get frustrated at my poor pregnant wife. The mental approach is immense. And i can sense a trip to Tiffany' s will be in order when this ordeal is over.
Please dont take my words as advice, I respect your situation and your challenges. It is just the opinion of some guy on drugs, who would other wise be arrested for DUI if he ventured out into the world.
I hear Santa is some where over New Zealand, any sight @Poppet ???

The nurse said it had a quality that allowed it to reattach based on my body heat??? Does that sound familiar? Until i find more info, any insight in regards to removing the bandage?
Ouch! You might be allergic to the adhesive in the dressing. I would suggest purchasing a dressing for sensitive skin. They are not as hard to remove.

Thanks @kfenn. I'm doing my best to keep my head above water here. I appreciate your words. I'm sure it's just a blip on the radar. Hope you take it easy on the family and keep moving ahead.
Lynn

Didn't make it out for a walk today. Mostly because the wife and kids are still in their pajamas!!

I am unable to find a comfortable elevated position. Finding the correct sequence of pillows that are both comfortable and stable appear to be too challenging for the scope of my engineering abilities.
Prob take off the dressing tomorrow.
Also gonna finally shave tomorrow
Today has been 8 days since surgery.
For activity today I:
Walked down 14 stairs
Used bathroom, including br teeth and washed up with sami wipes
Walked with forearm crutches to couch 20 ft at 8am
Got up 2 xs to use bathroom between 8-1pm; slept rest of time
Walked to kitchen to put ice away, and spent 7-9 min unloading some of dishwasher
Been on couch since in the kitchen 2-5 pm
Just did 4 heel slides ( felt fine)
Did 5-6 lateral slides ( felt fine)
Flexed glutes, quads and other muscles to evaluate what feels tight
IT band is very tight today
And thats it. Gonna turn on Lebron vs the Heat now!!

Wow big day for you! I did my PT exercises over the course of the day, including up and down out of the low recliner. I showered and did all of my ablutions. I survived Christmas with my sisters family over here at mothers. Tonight im taking two pain pills so I can hopefully sleep tonight. Last night felt like a fever dream all night long. Tonight better be much improved.

Sleep well, my friend. Tomorrow is PT and blood draw day again. Such a hectic life...
Lynn

Socks seem to be the biggest obstacle. I was just trying to use my 2 foot grabber to get my socks on when i felt and heard a crack in my hip. It was not painful. My toes were rotated outward and my hip angle was probably about 40 degrees, meaning i was not infringing on any of the 3 restrictions i have. Any thoughts?
Also i feel like flexibility is more important for me then strength. I did some light stretching with my quads and feet. It helped to relax the tightness around my knee. See how it feels in the morning.

@LibraryLynn good luck with sleep tonight.

@kfenn the crack could be just a tendon moving. I still have issues with socks and am 11 weeks out. I have the 90 degree restriction. I have a sock tool. Looks like a shinguard with a jump rope tied to it. I still need assistance with them. And shoes that tie if no one is around no can do. Socks are a big struggle.

Sounds like you are healing. Keep icing elevating resting.
