Hey @MarkK
I spoke to the OT, her name is Meredith, I was incorrect before. But she remembers you after I showed a pic of you. She also loved the website!
Congrats on you getting through the rehab the way you did.

Kfenn,

I do not remember a Meredith, but maybe for my first hip? But all the PTs were great, except for the very first one I saw, it was on the weekend of my first THR, he was moonlighting, he did not want to be there. It did not matter much, the others were so good later.

Good luck going forward, I am sure you will do fine.

I possible please ask for dr. Meeree assistant email address. I would like to her question regarding scheduling an appointment.

@Was_86 This is the info I have: main telephone line 212-263-2366
The email for his surgery coordinator Alexandra Ramirez is
Alexa.ramirez@nyumc.org. If you would like to talk i can message you my number. I can not say enough good things about Dr Meere.

Since I have been home, twice I have woken myself up by startling myself. I tense-up in my sleep and jump up causing significant pain. Especially in my groin area. Has this happened to you? I am not sure how i can help this. I don't want to continue with this behavior, being it puts pressure on muscles i prob should not at this time. I wish i had my nurse to get me ice.
I have some heat on my groin, hoping it will help with the tightness. I feel very good, and I am committed to doing this rehab correct. I never realized how low our toilets were. Good for the 3 year old, not good for thehip replacement guy.

Hi @kfenn - Glad everything is going well for you!! did you end up taking the train home? how'd it go? does the heat feel good...the groin pain could be bone, etc healing...ice might be better...i would check with doctor about it. Just remember to rest the first few weeks and elevate the whole leg not just at the knee...
Take care!

Thanks for the contact info. Being honest, first two weeks are tough. I had insomnia due to painkiller withdrawal. In top of that I became allergic to oxycodone after my surgery I had groin and pain around my knee for over 6 weeks since surgery
. I still have tightness and discomfort around groin area. Outpatient therapy and stretching helps. Last week did acupuncture on my operate thigh to loosen up the muscles and it helps. How long is your incision? Do you have any restrictions? Also follow up up with dr. Meere, how many times after surgery? Basically your experience with malko will determine if I have my other hip replaced the same way as well. I am looking forward reading your recovery thread. Icing and elevating your leg helps a lot. Take it easy the first 10 days. This was thr first week since surgery I put in a killer workout. Deadlift felt good. Just super sore.

@kfenn you sound like you're doing great!! Being able to read about everyone's journeys is invaluable. Have you taken a Saran wrap shower yet? :rotfl: I can't believe how there is virtually no pain, just log leg. Keep up the naps!

Hi @toohip
I was not elevating my leg, I thought that would cause blood to pool, and be a greater risk for a clot?? Please advise. My incision is on my upper buttocks. I was also worried about my foot would turn inward if my leg was elevated.
I did not take the train. My father picked me up, and the drive home was easily the most uncomfortable i have been. I felt strong enough to walk the distance from the curb to the track, however, the Dr felt it was less risky to obviously control the environment, in case of an emergency.
Another day in the hospital would have been good for me. My surgery was at 5 pm on Wed, i was discharged at 11:30 am on Friday. When i have my RTHR done, i will remember the time table.
Also this afternoon my 3 yearold was sitting near me watching cartoons when he went to get up and fell on my surgical leg pressing it toward the centerline. I teared up so fast. That was painful. I will be sure to monitor ho

Its 6:45, basically 72 hours post-op.

@toohip my experience with Dr Meere has been very good. As for the scar, the resident who observed my surgery said it was 6 inches long, and 2 small pilot holes on my iliac crest. These holes are do to the SuperPATH procedure. I saw Dr Meere 3 times Post op. Once about 2 hours after surgery, next the following morning at about 8 am, and then in the afternoon on the second day about 2-3:00 oclock. I thought i would see him before discharge, i did not. I do not have any symptoms of dead leg. It is pretty easy to do the heal slides. It was much harder to do heal slides after my scope 5 years ago. I do have pain and swelling in my groin. The ice is helping there.
Dr Meere was very confident in the process when he debriefed me post-op. He said it went "perfect." My limitations are, avoid 90 degree angle at the hip, do not allow your surgical leg to rotate inward, and keep the surgical leg from crossing the midline. These limitations will be removed at my follow-up appointment 5 weeks out (all thing being the same.) at this point, aside from Dr Meere's professionalism, i have to give some time to see how accurately my prosthesis was implanted. Like you, I plan to get back to weight training, and other aggressive movement forms.

@LibraryLynn , things are going well. The ride home was my least fav experience, and my experience in the bathroom. Not as regular as i hope to be. I have not showered! Just been using wipes from the hospital. As for sleep, i don't mind sleeping on my back!! :rotfl:
I also strapped the adduction pillow back on to avoid any more muscle spam/ painful involuntary movements. 2 of those and my son falling on me is more than enough pain.
I am looking forward to Christmas eve with the family. It is so nice to not limp around in pain. I know i keep saying it ( partly cause of the meds) i am just very, very Happy!!!!

@Was_86
I would recommend watching the different procedures on youtube ( if you have not already). That is what made my decision. I watched each one twice.

I actually performed a posterior lateral virtual interactive THR prior to my surgery. Hubby came home and found me and we had a great laugh.. He said 'nice technique...' - that is a compliment from a man who is medically trained..

@kfenn sounds like you are doing great. Try dried fruit for you regularity issue. My fav dried apricots.

My first week I remeber having weird pain sensations and some waking me up. I chalked it up to the muscles trying to heal and figure out what the heck just happened.

Keep icing, resting elevating and taking your meds. You are doing great.

Thank You @xtina16405
I woke up last night with an anxiety episode. The pain had increased, and the narcotic was taking a toll on my body. The increased pain i was feeling was consistent with when my son fell on the outside of my surgical leg causing me to break the center-line rule. This was an intense pain in my groin, then down into my knee. Both areas had swollen up. I became worried. I also felt nautious and dizzy. To make the story short after putting a call into Dr Meeres line, and in 30 min he returned my call around midnight. He reassured me the incident was statistically not serious and most likely a minor set back. This shook me out of my anxiety. I was happy he called but slightly embarrassed. Otherwise I am following all of your (everyones) advice. I have been charting my meds, which has helped with organization.
@Poppet that sounds so cool. I would have loved to try something like that. Watching the footage of surgeries, it seemed the Dr who performed the anterior approach used his cauterizing tool liberally. It got my attention while watching the surgery.
Bottom line is I can not stress how informative this site is and how therapeutic it is for me to express my thoughts on-line here!!!

Hi @kfenn - You might feel like cr@p for the first couple weeks...most of us did...at some points, I was extremely low and kept asking myself why did i even have this operation!!! It will get better with time!! the pain is your body healing...make sure you rest and don't push yourself to exhaustion. Just keep an ice pack(s) on your hip, elevate and take your pain meds on time for the first few weeks...the pain meds help your body to relax and heal. Try not to skip your pain meds, it's not worth the restlessness. Be sure not to overdue it on Christmas eve or day...you will still be in the very early stages of recovery and plus you still will have residual anesthesia in your system. I remember i went out to a diner with my family about 8 days from my surgery and couldn't even last the hour at the diner...I had to make them take me home...i looked and felt like dung (LOL)...got home and crashed...i really couldn't even sit in the chair that long and I even brought a pillow with me. Remember to rest in bed if you get tired...Don't over due it!!! Also, you might consider taking a laxative and stool softener...to help move things along...the pain meds could cause moderate constipation.

@toohip thank you for all your insight. I have been looking forward to your posts.

@Was_86 I was a little shocked last night when Dr Meere returned my call. It was about midnight, i was expecting one of the residents to call. The narcotics had gotten the best of my thinking, and I really needed his reassurance to set me straight. I am embarrassed that I interrupted his time, yet feel continued confirmation that I selected the correct Dr for me.

@LibraryLynn one tall glass of prune juice coming up. Its an acquired taste!:eeeuw:

@kfenn believe me, your doc is just as concerned about a successful procedure as you are. Great that he took your concern seriously and returned your call.

Good luck with the prune juice - yes you either love it or endure it! Dried apricots and black liquorice work for some as well.
