Oh Boy,
I just caught up with your thread. You have really been having a tough time.
I am sorry you are having to deal with this. I haven't had an infection, but that is the only thing I haven't had!!!
There are several members in this community who have dealt with, or are dealing with infections requiring antibiotic spacers.
I know that Sonia (Rest Assured) had to deal with infections and she is very supportive. If I knew how to tag her I would, but I don't, sorry.
In the meantime, know that here you are surrounded by lots of other "turtles" who are also dealing with chalenging or delayed recoveries. You will find lots of support here.
Don't be a stranger.
Best,
Sandy

Hello Hap!

Infections are the pits aren't they! Tear you down, make you weak, and leave you feeling so depressed!

Ok, so now here is the great news...... Get past the infection, and they will put Ina new knee! I had a one stage revision, but this doctor is one that only sees the toughest cases! Lucky Me huh! I am dealing with a shifty kneecap, but the infection is a thing of the past. I have been down the road you are on with infections 8 different times, and I can tell you there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and no train is attached! Anytime you need me, let me know. I am on here or try to be at least once a day if not more. I will be praying for you!

My heart goes out to you, I hope everything goes well

Thanks everyone for the support, I really appreciate it. I should know to come here everyday for the help and advice. Trying to kick the depression to the curb. Hope you are all doing well with your experiences, I am here to talk or anything needed.

When they kick the infection, your mood will brighten. It is so tough in limbo land, the not knowing, the wondering if they got it all. The getting ready for the knee replacement. All can depress you, but we are here and understand! :friends:

So sorry to hear what you are going through. I had a knee replacement for 7years before it got infected I have no idea how it got infected after all that time. I had a two stage revision with antibiotic spacers.the same has you. I had my new knee put in 18mths.ago. I am doing well I found my recovery was good after having my new knee the day after the operation I was able to bend my knee to 90 I am now at 120 which I am happy with. I know how you feel it seems that it's never going to end but you will get there .best wishes Irene.

That's the cruellest blow, my heart goes out to you. Tough times ahead but these things do have a resolution and you will be better again sometime. Do keep us posted, we want to know how you are getting along.

I had TKR on June 5. June 6 I fell. Tore patella tendon. Had surgery to repair it on July 18. Became very sick with infection, had total revision on July 31. Been on PICC line and one other antibiotic since then. Have weekly blood work to watch SED rate, and white blood count. Had surgery last week to remove cable holding patella in place.
I had a 1 stage revision, took everything out, packed with medicated mortar.
I am sorry I don't know anything about the spacer but know the feeling of having infection. I had staph and the first med my ID wanted me to take I was allergic to. My OS did an xray last week and no infection showed up.
Are you responding to antibiotics? Ask about white blood count and SED Rate. However the hardware in your leg and PICC line can keep your sed rate elevated. Wishing you the very best! Keep us updated on your progress. I have found this is a marathon not a sprint. Just have to keep that in mind.

Well Vic, looks like we have similar nightmares. I do have blood work done every monday, and on the 5th I will have an aspiration (Yikes) the tests will deceide what the next step will be. My knee looks good, infact the best it's ever looked, so I am hopeful. I think your medicated mortar, and my spacer are the same thing. Not much to support my leg, so I need a walker at all times. Can't wait to walk again, I don't know about you but, I am really sick of all the pain!!! Thanks so much for your support, and I hope you heal quickly too.

Hap, medicated mortar at least for me meant when Dr. Maale put in the one stage revision he impregnated it with beads of antibiotics that would slowly leach out over time. I think Vicki's is the same as mine, but I could be wrong.

I hope that they get this knee put in soon so you can get on with the business of living the rest of your life! I know, they have to make sure no infection first, and I completely understand that also!

It could be the Garamycin beads but I doubt it. Medicated mortar is a layman's way of describing bone cement (methylmethacrylcate) impregnated with Gentamicin. Before the advent of Pre-formed cement+antibiotic implants we had to make big mixes of the cement at the table and shape it with our hands into flattened balls that would fit in between the femur and the tibia. Since in the building world, cement is often also called mortar, it wouldn't seem too far a leap to call this "medicated mortar" but that's really all it is.

I know that the cement was impregnated with beads of Daptomycin in my case. They usually mix Daptomycin and Vancomycin , but since I am allergic to Vanco, he doubled the Daptomycin.

Well all I know is, I have something that's not a knee.:groan:I sure hope the infection is cleared up. I don't have any of the symptons I had before. I just want to move forward. I had no idea I would end up with 4 different surgeries. Thanks again for all the support. :thankyou:

We have traveled a similar path! I have had 4 surgiers since JUNE! Seemed to be doing well but now my SED rate is up. I am so ready to have this PICC line removed.
Although before first revision my knee did not hurt, I just became very ill. Never pain in the knee or any issues of infection on the outside.
I am so ready for a frozen drink on a white sand beach with sky blue water soaking up the sun!

Wow Vicky I sure can relate. I have my 4th surgery scheduled for the 11th of Oct. I sure hope it's the last. I am done with all this pain.
