Feeling pretty good with my walking now. Can walk pretty far without limping! First time in four years! I think I am ready for the cane. But don't feel comfortable making that call on my own just yet. That hip still feels kinda like there is a big spring attached to it that pulls back when I step forward haha.just stiff I guess, will take that over the old pain. Got the constipation back though. Just two days of taking Tylenol 3 and it made it's return, despite colace and prune juice. Ugh! Just tried MOM. Fingers crossed. I know some are here, post op, still struggling with pain and other problems. Hope they get improvement very soon. And others having surgery very soon and they are dealing with anxiety. I can identify. Hope peace and calm comes soon and time flies for them. Hope the rest of us keep on the straight and narrow, follow orders, and keep getting our daily small improvements!

Glad you are feeling good with the walking @ Rhonda K....it's great not to limp after such a long time! You will feel right with that cane...in time....I was on one crutch until 6 months...but not any more!!! It all comes good !! Anxiety is a huge issue in this recovery & should not be underestimated ....but, once again...time & patience wins through...that was the hardest aspect of recovery for me...xxxx

@Rhonda K Great news on your walking! Take your time transferring to the cane, there is no panic and rushing yourself is likely not the way to go. I think you do listen to that little voice very well all by yourself though :) I really admire your great recovery!

Hi @ Rhonda K....how are you feeling today? Do hope all going well xxx

Hello there Hoppy Nanny and MsFit1, thanks for checking in with me. I am doing well, a little restless but who isn't when stuck indoors mostly. The pain isn't bad, just the heavy tightness mostly. I guess that's just normal for us. Still using walker. I'm not sure if I should be using cane. Will find out on Monday when I have PT. Feeling a little uneasy about letting go of my security blanket. Guess you just force yourself to get the fears out of your head. Just seems like I have the feeling that hip is too weak to hold me up, just a hang up in my head I'm sure.

MsFit1 I made it past that problem, but it wasn't fun. I will try the magnesium supplements if it comes around again. I would try just about anything if they work. Thanks for the tip! Hope you are doing well also. So nice to have a whole community to turn to for help. For every problem, there is someone that can help. Thanks to all.

@RhondaK....cabin fever! Gets to you doesn't it it...not being able to be part of the world! It's not for long Hun....and you will be in full swing. I felt the same but once I was back to ' normal' I missed my little nap times.
As for using the walker versus the cane....I used one crutch for 6 months ( found a cane was not enough support) because of limp & bad gait.... I walk perfectly now. I think it's an individual thing...My hip felt like it wasn't ready to support its self until then. Of course, lots of pressure as almost everyone knew someone who was running a marathon after 6 weeks...la..la..la....but I just knew I wasn't ready. Don't be rushed is what I'm trying to say...
Hope the PT goes well on Monday....Chrissie xx

@Rhonda K Good Morning! I have seen different moderators and Josephine say here that the walker should be used until you are 'just taking it along for the ride', so not putting much weight on it at all. I have heard it will improve our gait in the long run and of course that is paramount to benefit from your new hip and keep it healthy. I wouldn't push yourself to move on if I were in your shoes, rushing may very well cause a set back. As Hoppy Nanny says, don't compare yourself to others; there are so many variations in the hip replacements we all have and added to that are all of our personal differences.

@RhondaK, just catching up on two day's of reading posts. I was up early today, seeing the guys off on their fishing trip. Still in FL, looking forward to morning at the beach with the girls.

The cabin fever got to me about 18 days in. I didn't care about going outside until then and I was still uneasy at the prospect of leaving my cocoon. Our recovery rooms become safe havens and it takes a bit to push yourself out. There are still days I long for that healing solitude and quiet.

My PT gal told me when to try the cane. She had watched me wag my walker around like a third leg and thought it was preventing me from moving ahead in my rehab. That takes courage and some mental adjusting but it helps get you ready for real life again.

Be encouraged and a bit daring in what you try to do -- even if you don't succeed the first time! Just part if this crazy process but we all have been there and we know it works!!

Good morning Hoppy Nanny, Carriemay, and Beach Gal!, you guys have already brightened my day. It is nice to have my thoughts seconded by those that have been there, done that. I know I want to step up to the cane, but if I don't feel secure I will stick with walker. As everyone says, we all have our own recovery and it's not a contest. So that's my plan. When the time is right I will know. Yes cabin fever is the word. Just never thought I would wish to go to Walmart so bad....haha. Having a continued heat wave here in So. Cal. 103 degrees today. Makes it hard to even walk around outside house, so inside pretty much for me until I go to PT on Monday. And like everyone else, the lack of energy is hard to deal with too. Sometimes it takes me by surprise at how bad it gets, shaky arms, and pounding heart and general feeling of weakness after say, taking a shower. Be so glad when that gets outta here.

But the positives are less incision pain, mostly just tightness. Can do more and more for myself.
Have a question, anyone else experience itching? That's my newest thing to aggravate me. Mostly my back but a little all over. If it's any medication I'm taking can't figure which one. Could it be the Warfarin or another thought. My primary care Dr changed my cholesterol meds just before surgery. Just not pleasant on top of all else. Benadryl doesn't help, ugg,

Finally getting staples removed on Tuesday. My skin is growing over some of them they've been in so long! But my OS insists on 4 weeks. Hoping to ditch the stockings on that day too. Oh happy day! Should be getting off Warfarin too. Tuesday is a day to look forward to!

Hope you all have a great weekend. Beach Gal wishing you a wonderful time with your loved ones, already sounds like you and yours are doing just that. Sounds like a great idea. What a great way to relax and let go of the recent stresses........

Hello all,

Just a short update. Progress is a little slow right now. Went to PT today. Went through the paces pretty well. The one I don't like is that darn clam shell while laying on my side (ouch)! Was a little disappointed. He said I am not ready to trade the walker for the cane. Said I am too weak. So will be two more weeks before I see him again and he said no trying it till then. Will be patient as I can be. Better safe than sorry. Having some upper thigh pain and stiffness, but all in all nothing major.

Got the call from the pharmacy though. Off the Warfarin as of tomorrow. Sounds good to me! It means no more stockings!!!! Get my staples out tomorrow too. Have a feeling that's gonna make me feel much better. Always seems to be good news mixed with a little bad. I'll take it. Take care everyone. Hope we all have a healing rest tonight and feel just a little stronger tomorrow.

@Rhonda K....the progress slows down after the first few weeks but still continues for some considerable months.....I could never and have never done the clamshells....the PT showed me and it hurt so I declined gracefully. Glad you are staying on the cane....you will know when you are ready to drop it...it will feel right.
No warfarin and no stockings...a milestone indeed!! Glad all going we'll...s.l.o.w & s.t.e.a.d.y is soooooo very good for this revovery. Hope you have a good week...Chrissie x

Can't wait to hear how wonderful you'll feel tonight without those blasted staples and stockings! And to be off the blood thinners is great news, too! I told you those clam shells were horrid! I still have days where I can only do ten or so. They test my patience and remind me of how much I've NOT healed...:boohoo:

Feel like it's freedom day!! Staples out, stockings drying outside, (not on legs, but oh my poor skin) Feels good! Thanks Hoppy Nanny, Carriemay, and Beachgal for encouragement and keeping my eyes on the goal that's out there and getting closer. As for those clam shells...........well could only get that leg up maybe an inch. Hurt like crazy, tried yesterday, body said "nope, don't think so" so those are on the shelf for now....sorry Matt.....

Still hot out this way, upper 90's today, but took my trusty walker for a walk up the street last couple of days and trying to walk more around backyard. Sure would be easier if cooler ( and if we didn't have bumpy sidewalks). But I know walking is what I need so will try to increase everyday. It should improve my stamina too, which is a little worrisome to me at this point but will give it more time to build up. I had been on stationary bike quit a lot before surgery, along with strengthening and stretching exercises pre op so thought going in I was in ok shape. Just goes to show how fast not doing much can wipe out what you have. Also just the energy drain from the surgery of course also. But can't wait to feel some some pep again. But just getting past those few things today has energized me and like everyone, each milestone brings us closer to that goal. Getting there............

Happy freedom day @RhondaK.....! You will get your 'pep' back....it's that 'time & patience' thing that you learn during the THR recovery....it won't be long and you will be up at at 'em! X

@RhondaK, I used my trusty Vit E oil that I bought for my incision scar on my horribly dry leg after I got rid of my TEDs. I'm on my second bottle but I'm a believer! Slather it on from hip to toes and watch your skin drink it in. I was amazed. It's just now starting to resemble the leg I used to have!
