THR Let's make it a matched set!

Ha! Not loopy except from fatigue right now. About to head to the bedroom. I haven't used any Rx pain meds today, just Tylenol. But man am I tired. Visitors, the PT (we mostly chatted and then she watched me walk, get in and out of bed, get on and off the toilet, etc.), all good but exhausting.

Glad to hear you are getting through the tough parts:flwrysmile:
All that healing takes ALOT of our energy these early days.

Hope you are icing it up and have a restful day today!:ice:

When I looked at my phone this a.m. I saw that a friend had called a little after 9--I didn't even hear the phone so I must have been really out. Slept through until just before 6 a.m. Looks like a beautiful day out there. Only one potential visitor today so perhaps a more restful day.

Day 4, late afternoon. Hot day today--was feeling the incision area more this afternoon and figured it might be the heat--ice has been applied! Although I slept well last night, I've been sleepy all day--keep dozing off and then coming awake usually when the cat bursts in. All part of the early recovery dance. Still not feeling the need for anything stronger than acetaminophen and ice. Some soreness and some muscle pain when I first stand up but things loosen up as I amble along. Still using the walker, of course, but am leaning on it a lot less. Gait is good once I get moving. Still have log leg--this seems to be lingering longer than it did w hip #1. A friend just stopped by w a small basket of fresh, local strawberries--what a treat! I can tell this is going to be a more tedious recovery--maybe because it's #4 in less than 3 years. Even though I'm sleepy I'm chomping at the bit wanting to go and do and be out in summer. Patience grasshopper, patience.

Woke today with a touch of the post-op blues--seems like they might be visiting earlier than they have in other surgeries. I live alone, which mostly suits my somewhat introverted self but does make the confinement of recovery more difficult. When I'm fit and mobile I can always just go someplace when I need to be with people--bop downtown to a coffee place and settle in for a bit, drop in on a friend, do some retail therapy, etc. But not right now. Friends have been great--one of them stopped by this morning with coffee and a muffin--but there are long stretches of alone time that start to weigh heavily. This too shall pass, of course. And I have much to be grateful for--strong body, good surgeon, good friends, comfy home, so far a smooth recovery, a comfy place to recline on my screened in back porch.

There you are @gertie !! You sound like you are doing well! I am a day behind you and I am still taking a wee bit of the narcotic drug- it just makes things a little less difficult.
I have taken myself down a flight of stairs so I can sit on my open front porch, man it is hot out here! I was wanting the warm air to dry my hair and I think it did it in seconds flat! Now Im worried that my already swollen leg is going to puff up like a blowfish if I don't get back inside. but it's so nice to enjoy the summer air and breezes, even for a limited time. You sound great! We are getting this thing done!:happydance:

[Bonesmart.org] Let's make it a matched set! My caretaker asleep on the job.

@gertie Awe, cute kitty. Well I feel a bit worse on weekends. Now anyways. Most of my friends are off doing things, camping and playing.... Monday-Friday I tend to feel better because most of the world is back to work. I guess that's a little selfish or jealously coming out because I can't do my normal summer weekend fun things too just yet....:umm:

An "early days" observation: I still groan and mutter a few swear words as I get out of bed and creep down the hall first thing in the morning but that achy stiffness soon eases with movement. This morning I was able to push my walker with one hand while I carried my coffee cup in the other and walked with a normal gait to my recliner. I remember how painful any movement was those first couple of days--it does get better!

I still groan and mutter a few swear words as I get out of bed and creep down the hall first thing in the morning

You're funny, @gertie :heehee:

I recall pushing the walker one handed, coffee in the other hand too. It actually felt good though because no matter how small, it was a step toward regaining my independence. You're doing well at only 6 days post op.
I hope you have a peaceful Sunday. :friends:

It does feel good--widens the horizons of what's possible, hints at moving to a cane. I also spilled the cat's water dish all over the kitchen floor and had to grab the mop and mop up the spill while on the walker. Would have had a hard time with that a couple of days ago but not today.

Day 6. One week ago I was circling my yard, limping with my painful old hip, calling for the cat who had decided it was a good day to ignore me, panicking as I ran through all the possible "what-ifs". With surgery the next day at 7:30 what would I do if he was stuck up a tree, didn't come back, had been beaten up by another cat, etc.? Nice calm way to head into the big event. He, of course, came ambling along as dinner time approached and all was well. A friend picked me up and we headed for the hospital.

I'm so glad the surgery is behind me and so far recovery is going well. Yes, I'm sore and tired but nothing out of the ordinary.

My meditation group met at my house this a.m., one of my friends brought me some curried chicken salad for lunch, another friend called for a long chat. Thunderstorms this afternoon but nothing too violent. Supper soon and an early night I think. Recovery continues.

And here I am, 1 week out from surgery.
  • Aquacell dressing came off today and PT/nurse said all looked good, although there's a bit of bruising on my rear end
  • I think I was too active yesterday and 1st thing today and have been feeling some muscle pains today so taking it easy but overall I'm walking well.
  • Still using the walker and will continue to do so this week I think.
  • Still struggling a bit with the blues, especially with the holiday weekend coming up--I suspect there will be some long stretches of time alone and much as I love my house, I'm sick of being in it. I might go for a ride with a friend tomorrow but have no idea who will be around over the weekend.
  • Meals on Wheels has been tasty but there will be no delivery Thursday through Sunday (holiday plus weekend) so I'll need to think about feeding myself! I have some stuff in the freezer but there may well be a pizza delivery at some point.
  • I think I'm discovering just how hard it is to do 4 of these surgeries in less than 3 years--hard emotionally if not physically. I know I'll get back out in the world but I am not feeling patient about this period of being dependent and laid up and tired.
Sorry to be a bit of a downer but that's where I'm at right now--thankful the surgery is available and also sick of being in recovery.

@gertie, you are not a downer. It is a reality and that many surgeries take a toll on our emotions and reserves of patience. You are awesome in your posts and support of others. Mine will be the 4th joint in 6yrs and I am irked already that my wellness did not last longer. Frustrated with waiting to get to the other side and worrying that I used up my good fortune with 3 good surgeries and recoveries.

It is hard to go through these things and there are moments when we all get angry and frustrated and very blue. I look at your posts and see someone who is managed all this so well and usually sounds so level and wonder how in the world is she doing this and think if she can, I will too. Thank you.

worrying that I used up my good fortune with 3 good surgeries and recoveries.
Oh, I know this one all too well. I was much more fretful leading up to this surgery than to the others (not that I was relaxed about those). And I think this is feeling like a somewhat harder recovery--but I don't really know if that's true--I might well be looking at history through rose-colored glasses!

In any case, thank you for your kind words.

 @gertie
That is ALOT of joint replacement surgeries in so little time, and I can only guess this is GETTING OLD.
Early days, dear friend...this is the tough stuff.
Healing mojo coming your way...
:roseshwr:

Oh @gertie ,, I am sure you ARE feeling a little blue at yet another recovery.. but you'll see,, another few days and I bet you will feel like the tin man after a good oil can was applied! I sure hope so.. I hope I'm not remembering with rose colored memory cells, either. I loved your kitty cat picture.. Mine is happily on my legs again at night. a little ouch! but i've missed her so I'm taking the good with the bad. :kitty: Hopefully you are enjoying some pleasant weather, too? The past few days have been such a gift..

@CricketHip Had to laugh at the tin man--this one is still a little rusty! Weather here has been good. I suspect the emotional weather will continue to be a bit unsettled until I can drive and be out in the world more.
