THR left hip replacement painful, still 4½ weeks in<

Well thought I would say how useful all of you members of thus site have been. I haven't written much as I didn't feel my progress was terribly interesting or useful to anyone. I have been reading posts a lot however.

I would appreciate any advice from anyone who has on going back problems. I am now in week 8 since surgery on April 27. Not only has groin and thigh pain suddenly started up in operated leg but low back ache really bad.

I've had to return to using a stick outside. I have driven a few short journeys but it's very uncomfortable. I am not going anything except short walks. Pain does move around and swap from side to side but generally settles around my tailbone making sitting very difficult. Take a cushion everywhere to sit on.

I'm worried as I am due back at work on July 9 and have a 30 mile round trip and will be on my feet. The job is physical.

Thank you by the way to everyone who explains exactly where and how their pain is. So useful. Get sick of those who have not experienced a joint replacement going on about how someone they know was playing tennis after 3 weeks or climbing some mountain or other!!!!

My back pain was gone for the beginning of my recovery thanks to inactivity. Once I got active my back woke up again. In addition to my usual back pain I do experience pain across my power back at times and down my outer butt and down my thigh. Generally it's from doing any physical work. I can really make it hurt if I push it and this is just working around the house and land. About a month ago I did some work on a step ladder and it really set me back a way.

I hear you !
All those stories prior...it’s nothing , you’ll be so happy.
Everybody is different. And everybody heals differently. I compete against no one. My competition is my yesterday.
It’s like those baby stories when my kids were infants..my kids were crying every 2 hours.. never failed, “oh, my angel sleeps thru the night. “ I always thought they were lying..hee hee ..Gee, I hope I don’t open that can of worms.
I’m in week 4, I got pains and aches all over the place..
I hate sleeping in my back. I wake up with a backache. I make a nest and turn about 10 degree to one side..pillow between my legs..it helps , a little.
Sending healing thoughts your way.

My competition is my yesterday.
@AnnieRose2 , how lovely. I'm SO stealing that line.

It is so very true...there are, I am sure, some folks with MIRACULOUS recoveries, Alot who think they will forego the normal recovery and end up with chronic issues, and then there are the fibbers!:nah:

Two months IS still early days, and it is far enough out that we can tend to overdo some. Bad Back from Bad posture and bad gait from bad hips for extended period corrected with THR can also have its own healing issues.

If you think that there is a serious problem, certainly you may want to check with your OS but I know I had issues that were still resolving at 6-7 months out.
Hope you have a better day today.:console2:

I have sent mp's to the above and am grateful for the responses. I think there are some useful points here. Anyone had their leg lengthened during their op? Mine was due to my operated leg initially being shorter due to scoliosis. This familiar story with anyone else?

Hi @bestfoot
Wondering if you'd like the forum Nurse to weigh in on the issues you mentioned a few posts up.
If so, please tag her, or we can do it for you....
I didn't experience the leg lengthening during surgery as you did, but I know others have.
I hope you have a good weekend!

Ok, I will tag @Josephine to advise on the issues you've noted above in Post # 24
Please check back periodically in case she has questions.
Wishing you comfort!
@bestfoot

Oh bestfoot, how I wish you were all over the tough stuff. Do you think you might have overdone it a bit and possibly that has caused some muscle issues?
I hope that all eases soon.
This is a prime time for post op energy drain and the blues to set in.
I wish you a peaceful weekend!

Well that really isn't true! This forum depends upon regular updates so newer members know what to expect. You say that and then you say this
Thank you by the way to everyone who explains exactly where and how their pain is.
Suppose those people didn't post - you wouldn't have had that information, would you?
I have sent mp's to the above
When you say "mp's" do you really mean PMs or personal messages? If so, please don't do that. You deprive the forum of valuable feedback which others would be glad to see. So please don't make responses to posts in your thread in the form of PMs.

I'm worried as I am due back at work on July 9 and have a 30 mile round trip and will be on my feet. The job is physical.
What is your job? What kind of work do you do?

Get sick of those who have not experienced a joint replacement going on about how someone they know was playing tennis after 3 weeks or climbing some mountain or other!!!!
Oh those people are so irritating! Just ignore them. For one thing, it's never about them or what they did, it's always about a friend's brother-in-law or a neighbour's cousin! In other words, you cannot believe the stories at all.

Pain does move around and swap from side to side but generally settles around my tailbone making sitting very difficult.

Perhaps I can help. Can you tell me the site of these pains using this chart?

[Bonesmart.org] left hip replacement painful, still 4½ weeks in<

On my back the pain is mostly L38 and R38 level with T. It varies in severity and which side is the worst. Occasionally it is just the one side. I also get deep buttock pain L28 T and V. On front of left hip it is R2F level T and V.

I work in a hospice. I work with patients and families, pre and post bereaved with clay, plaster and many other art materials. I have day patients and also private family groups making family heirlooms/meaningful artwork to help create positive memories. If the family is bereaved, we make art work to help with communication and allowing the family an uninterrupted space to come together and start to come to terms with the space their loved one has left behind.

I love it but it means being on one's feet and bending to load the kiln, lifting bags of clay and sometimes being at very awkward angles when trying to do a hand cast of a husband and wife for example. I have volunteers who can help with this though and managed when my back and hip were bad right up until my recent op.

I am not doing any exercises prescribed since back pain kicked in big time but am trying to walk short distances regularly. I have a minor scoliosis and the surgeon 'straightened me up' as he put it.

Sorry level S with L28 and L38 along with T. More S than T. Just realised it is L2B and L3B. Read B as an 8. Sorry! Didn't have my glasses on.

What would L3B and R3B level S be? Thank you for your time.

Today continued walking and aforementioned areas kicked off followed by right buttock pain worse on sitting in R2B level T.

I need you to answer some questions for me before I can answer that

It would be very helpful if you would answer each one individually - numbered as I have done - in as much detail as you can then I'll come back as see where you are

1. what approach did you have for your surgery? Anterior, posterior, lateral? You can look here to see the various types THR approaches or incisions

2. what are your pain levels right now? (remember the 1-10 scale: 1 = no pain and 10 = the worst you can imagine. And don't forget to factor in other forms of pain such as soreness, burning, stabbing, throbbing, aching, swelling and stiffness).

3. what pain medications have you been prescribed, how much are you taking (in mg please) and how often?

4. are you icing your painful area at all? If so, how often and for how long?

5. are you elevating your leg. If so how often and for how long?

6. what is your activity level? What do you do in the way of housework, cooking, cleaning, shopping, etc., and

7. are you doing any exercises at home? If so what and how often?
This is the most crucial question so please help me by using the format I have left as an example
(which means please make a list and not an essay!)

Exercises done at home
- how many sessions you do each day
- enter exercise by name then number of repetitions of each
etc., etc.

Anything done at PT
- how many times a week
- enter exercise by name then number of repetitions of each
etc., etc.

Sorry for late reply. I have been unwell for non hip reasons.

1 I had a lateral replacement.

2 Right this minute it is a 2. When I walk triggers pain mainly this week in my left so joint area. I can actually press the spot and it spreads the pain across the back of my low back/buttocks. It aches also front of thigh. A deep ache.

3 meds are Tramadol but I am not taking regularly as I have on going digestive problems.

4 I do ice fairly regularly mostly when sitting if pain us bad from walking but sitting for a while or bending forward can relieve symptoms. Sitting for too long can trigger other back issues. I have a scoliosis since I was 15. The surgeon has lengthened my leg.

5 I elevate for a couple of hours a day when I am sitting.

6.My activity level is 10,000 steps a day over the day. I invested in a fitbit. I most definitely do little and often. I don't walk for more than half an hour but find pain kicks in anyway.

7. On kand I am only walking and general housework. I can't stand for too long. I go to hydrotherapy twice a week and do the exercises I was given to do on dry land in the water.

I mostly relax on a sponge tube and walk or gently kick my legs under the water. My physio which I have been offered as part of a lower leg program won't start till I am 3 months post replacement.

Exercises are
leg to side standing up x10
leg push backwards tightening buttocks x10
marching on the spot x100 steps
slight squat hold stomach and buttocks to keep balance while doing figure of 8 one hand over the other in front of you just under the water x 50 each direction
slight squat pass 5lb weight around your body engaging buttocks and core again.
walk sideways in water up and down pool x3
walk forwards as above
walk backwards as above

I find being in the water relieves most pain.

Thank you for your time.
