TKR Knees 1 AND 2 up and running

Goodness, I'm tired just reading about all travel necessary! You are amazing!

What joy you gave me reading about your wonderful visit with your OS! God is SO good. HE is healing you perfectly and you will be a blessing to all those in your African travels. What an unselfish person you are. I have met so many amazing people on this forum! What a blessing all of you are to me! And Sheila, keep up with your praising! It is uplifting!

Thanks. It was a happy day.

OP PT yesterday - knee 1 is 117 and 0 (2 months). I've lost a little ROM (it was 122 preop knee 2. Knee 2 is 92 and 0. PT was very gentle, but I still had to ice a long time when I got home. He wants me to cut back on activity at home and ice more due to swelling in knee 1-- I can't see the swelling. Hard to cut back on activity as I do very little, but I will start icing knee 1 again, as I have neglected it.

I'm cleared to drive. I wish they made drive-thru hair salons!

I think it's only natural for your 'old' knee to swell since you are relying on it 90%. It still is a baby and needs that ice and elevating. Shoot, I still ice a lot even this late out. The more we use our knees the more they swell. That is just the way it is until they are completely healed. Take is as easy as you can!

Thanks, Sister! You are exactly right.

Day 16

Back from OP PT. I drive myself after practicing in neighborhood. Driving feels fine, but I'd not get on the highway yet. PT is only 10 miles from home. Happy day- knee 1 is back to 122 after my icing it a lot yesterday. Knee 2 is at 107. Both a 0. I rode the stationary bike for 8 minutes and it felt so good. A few gentle stretches and a walk around (with cane) to practice gait. It's worth going to PT to use the Gameday icers on both knees. Pure heaven.

My right foot is pronating -- I had on some old sneakers that are worn inwards. PT said new sneakers ASAP, until then, it's better for me to go barefoot inside than wear my old shoes. He recommended, like Marian, going to running store and have them fit me. Brand ascis? I think. I've got some of those that I only wore once cause they were heavy and made my arthritis flare. Arthritis is gone now,so I'll give them a try. I'll Need all new shoes, but sneakers first.

What a difference just a few days can make! Praise God. I'm wiped out tired now. Got both knees on ice and elevated. I'm settled in for the rest of the day. Getting up, showering, drying hair, makeup, dressed, short drive to PT -- seems so simple, but I'm as tired as if I'd worked a 12 hour shift. I'm so grateful I can rest and do nothing the rest of the day. Whew.

Now that both our knees are aligned, some serious shoe shopping is needed! :yahoo: Too bad we don't live closer knee-twin.

I have 2 pairs of sneakers for over pronation. One brand is Brooks (ghost) and the other was Saucony. They have helped me with my gait especially since my feet are now hitting the ground squarely.

I did finally go to a running store where they watched me walk, checked my gait, and brought out their suggestions. I supinate on the TKR foot. I ended up with a brand I'd never have chosen since I'm such an asics fan. New Balance felt the best, with a wide foot base and neutral in the pronation/non pronation area.
I love walking in them on my long walks! It was the best thing to do. I have other new running type shoes, including a pair of Vionics, but these are the best for walking long distances.

New Balance, I have had before and love them. Thanks, MamaZ. NB, did you buy online or go get fitted?

Does anybody know if Nuats are knee-good? I loved them pre-knee and they make comfortable dress shoes. Will we be able to wear heels (low, low)? I'm not vain, but some occasions it would be nice, only if there is no potential for knee-harm. What an amazing thing to be thinking about. This time last week I couldn't walk down the stairs without husband and tears.

I did go to a small store in a local town that catered to runners and the owner herself was a marathon runner. They took the time to fit me and even told me that within 30 days from when I bought them I could bring them back even though I had worn them the whole time! Since I wear sneakers at work and usually daily too I picked up both brands. I haven't been able to wear dress shoes in a long time comfortably and never heels since my original injury happened when I was just 18. I have a black pair of sneakers too.:heehee:

Has anyone checked out "The Walking Company"? I bought a pair of ABEO shoes there after my first meniscus surgery. They were great, I was limping when I went in and as soon as I put the shoes on, no more limp!!
I am thinking of trying them again now that I have new knees. They have stores in some of the malls here. They are not cheap though... New Balance makes great walking shoes also.

My feet are so wide it is as if I have swim fins---I wear New Balance because they come in 4E widths. I wear them to umpire, too---they make plate shoes and base shoes in the same wide-width variances. They have always been very, very comfortable.
They are not cheap though...
I believe that you get what you pay for---especially with shoes. having excellent shoes that fit well and take care of your feet---then they take care of the rest of you from the feet on up. I am willing to pay a premium for that.

I bought them in a store. The fit was my concern and I wanted an experts advice. It's also a private running store and all of the salespeople are runners and trained in fitting shoes. And turns out, he was right!

Great on both accounts, no infection and travel plans! I stopped at a healthy foot shoe store last week in Ann Arbor and bought three new pairs of shoes, thanks to the advice from this board. Spending so much money on clothes at one time is so unusual for me, that my credit card was declined. I called the credit card people from the shoe store, and they said it was instantly flagged for the fraud department, because it was so far out of my usual spending habits. Guess I'd better start buying more clothes on a regular basis....

Yes, it's the only solution to those bothersome fraud reports! Aren't you glad you got those shoes? They do make a big difference.I have no interest in clothes this year, unusual for me, but I'm craving shoes!

Yeah, I noticed in my water walking that my non operated leg steps firmly through the middle of my foot, while the operated knee tended to come down and roll to the inside or outside, so I figured if that's now built into the wear pattern of my old shoes, better get some new ones. Never would have noticed if not for the discussions here of how bad gait is encouraged by our old shoes..

I wore a pair of shoes out yesterday that I haven't worn since before the surgery and was in a lot of pain, they are too flat, I definitely need new ones, but I'm in the UK and don't really know which brands would be good. That's happened to me with the credit card fraud as well. I hope you are going to enjoy going places in your new shoes.

I've been wearing 'rockers' for years. My OS back in the 90s suggested them. I started off with MBTs but a few years ago discovered Ryn stable rockers, which rock only from front to back, not side to side, too like the MBTs. I am much more confident walking in the Ryn shoes. But, since the surgery I have been mostly barefooted in the house and putting shoes back on I'm finding, hurt my knee. Now that winters coming I'll be keeping my shoes on and my knee will get used to walking in them again.

Thank you all for the shoe discussion. It is something I didn't plan for in TKR recovery, but it's a happy problem to have. I found a store here that does not look as intimidating as the typical
"Runners Shoe Store". I am going to wait til my gait gets a little more stable to shop. I did find the Asic walkers that I couldn't wear before-- they seem heavy, but I've been wearing no shoes or sketchers (which PT guy said were not good due to no support). I also remember REI did a big assessment for my hiking boots-- one day I hope to need that again!

I woke up in the middle of night with a 7-8 pain behind knee and in hip joint. Walking stopped it. I think the hip pain is from the way I elevate (stack pillows). It got bad with first knee and I want to nip it for this one. I'm thinking a little pillow under hip joint while elevating? I elevate with a cold gel pack there now.

Now you can buy lightweight shoes. I have a pair of New Balance that I think are called Minimus. They are no heavier than a pair of slippers. Other brands also make them too if you have a problem with those heavy athletic shoes. I haven't had shoes on in some time, just slippers, because my feet were swollen. I have a pair of ancient (at least 40 years old) Minnetonka slippers that I've been living in. I should be in real shoes again very soon.
