Revision TKR Knee replacement is not nice to me...

:hysterical:
GOMER= Get Out Of My ER.
Gomers go to ground.

That book might just deserve a re-read. I still have my original one from Med School.

Had my EMG today. The Dr. told me that there is absolutely nothing wrong with my nerves or muscles. I am relieved and glad there is no nerve damage. Now I need to wait until I get the results from my bone scan to see what direction to go in next. Sometimes I feel like I am chasing something invisible and I can't catch it because I can't see it.

I am angry at the OS that I saw on April 11th (with a referral from my original orthopedic) who told me that there was nothing he could do for me, that it was all nerve related and that I was depressed. He didn't bother to even try to look at my knee- looked at x-rays from November, and refused to do any more tests. It bothers me that he made me feel so discouraged, and even more that I had to pay for the freaking appointment where he didn't even help me! :hissyfit:

I'm obviously not going back to him ever again.

Sounds like a very good plan, Coachie! Well, I am very pleased there is no nerve damage as anything else is much easier to fix. Nerve stuff is a real bind. Onwards and upwards, my dear!

Good news Coachie! You can eliminate nerves and muscles, the field has been narrowed now so hopefully you can move forward faster from here. I hear ya about the doctor who was of no help. I went a couple of trips to a pain doctor once who just wanted me to take Oxycodone to function in daily life. Actually I think I am even more upset at my past OS who referred me to him. I wanted my problem fixed...not functioning on narcotic pain killers. That is when I went out and found my new OS and got my new knee!

I am extremely happy that there is no nerve damage and that my pain is not nerve related as I knew that would have been a longer recovery that is harder to deal with.

However- I am angry that this orthopedic has pushed me in this direction for months and would not think of any other possible solution.

Even at this distance, the nerve damage theory seemed far fetched.

The tricky part of problematic TKAs is you have two threads going: one is trying to address the problem, and the other is trying to manage our emotions and psychological stress.

Eventually my TKA problems got resolved but it left me with anger and fears that I am still trying to resolve. Take good care of yourself in this process, Coachie, so that when your knee issue gets resolved, you are ready to enjoy life to the fullest.

I'm having horrible knee pain today. I'm not sure why because I didn't do anything yesterday to cause stress in the knee, but it is hurting

I can't take any pain meds for at least 4 hours due to another med that I am on that can interact with the pain med, so it's going to be a long morning at school. Hopefully my kiddos will be good!

The hardest part right now is that I have no form of pain management or anything like that other than the Ultram (that I was prescribed back last June) and Tylenol. There is nothing else that anyone has been able to do to help me with this and at times it's like I am being ignored or just told to "wait it out." My Ultram rarely helps other than taking the slight edge off the pain, so when I call my doctor and they tell me to just take the Ultram, it is hard.

I am just very discouraged right now and trying to work through this, but days like today when I had to stop 3 times walking up a flight of stairs at school are tough. :sigh:

Would I be correct in guessing that you are taking 50mgs of Ultracet at a time? You can take 100mgs, 150 even if necessary. Also take 1,000mg Tylenol with it each time. That was what I was prescribed for my knee and it worked wonderfully well.

I take 100 mgs. of the Ultram at a time and take Tylenol as well. The problem right now is that because of another medication that I am on, I can only take around 100-150 mgs total of the Ultram in 24 hours. Today was a rough one all the way around- the pain was pretty bad.

I am seeing my primary care physician tomorrow so will try once again to see if there is anything anyone can do to help out a bit.

I know these next two suggestions are going to sound weird....

Has anyone suggested Lyrica or Cymbalta. Both have some good results at relieving long term pain ....like fibromyalgia.

My ortho suggested Cymbalta so I am sure that my primary care will bring it up (if she doesn't than I will) because she gets all the notes from him.

How are you feeling now, Coachie?

Try not to let that referral surgeon's lack of help get to you. That is the primary reason why we recommend that folks NOT see someone connected in any way to their first surgeon for a second opinion. It is just human nature not to go against the first doctor's diagnosis in that case.

Knee hurts pretty bad today. I was switched to Cymbalta over the weekend and my family doctor does not want me taking any other pain relievers other than some Tylenol here and there. It takes a while for the Cymbalta to kick in, so for the last two days I've been pretty miserable.

I will hopefully get the results from my bone scan this week and then can go from there.

Oh Coachie!

I am sorry to hear that you are hurting!

I was on Cymbalta for a while, but then my neurologist switched me to trazadone so I could get some sleep also. It seems to help me more than the Cymbalta did.

One thing they never did was tell me not to take my pain meds because of cymbalta though!

I am surprised.
:hate-shocked:

I can't take my normal pain medication because it is Ultram (Tramadol). There is a major drug interaction between Ultram and Cymbalta so I cannot take them at the same time.
I am allergic to most narcotics, so pretty much all I have had since my first tkr was Ultram and it usually worked ok for me though lately it wasn't working very well which is why I've been told to try the Cymbalta. Unfortunately, the Cymbalta is not working for pain right now. Sigh...

I'm sorry to hear that! Is there anything else that they can give you for pain that doesn't interact with the Cymbalta?

Have you tried Celebrex? It works well for me, but I don't know how it would work for you. I took it at the same time I was taking Cymbalta.

Hi Coachie, I'll be interested in how the Cymbalta works out for you. I do heavily rely on celebrex. The few times I haven't taken it my knee not only hurt more but swelled plus lots of other places hurt as well. Just want to add that you ARE making (slow) forward progress.

This is not fun. I started the Cymbalta on Saturday. Over the weekend, I had really bad knee pain that I thought would go away with a little time as my primary physician said it would take 4-5 days to start working for pain relief. Well on Monday I called her office twice because my pain was still horrible- she was out and no one got back to me. Yesterday I called her office again to say that I was having such bad pain still. Her nurse called me back at 3:30 and said that she had suggested that I take Tylenol and just wait as it will start working. Now, if the Tylenol was working for my pain, do you really think that I would call three times in two days asking for help on what else to do?

I feel like I'm being treated like a "drug seeker" even though I have never taken anything stronger than Ultram due to many allergies that I have. It's like I'm making up the pain or that I am being pushed to not take anything to see my body is addicted or something. I am so tired of having to "defend" my pain. I'm kind of in a tough spot- which I fully understand- as I don't like to take medications and my doctor knows that so she is trying to help me through this, but at the same time I would just love a little advice on how to get through this. She is a good doctor, I am just frustrated...

Just had to vent. I hurt so bad that I can't even concentrate. When the heck is this Cymbalta going to kick in??? Luckily I have some unexpected free time at school right now as my kiddos are testing- though I have to teach two periods in a row in about five minutes.

Coachie, the Cymbalta takes 10-14 days before you feel a significant difference. Has any MD suggested Neurontin? You're not "drug seeking"& I'd probably have a "come to Jesus" talk with my MD to push for answers and find relief for your constant pain. If you can, limit the # of times you use the stairs.
You take care!
