Hooray for the "friendlies"! I missed the little guys. And so good to see you're back, too, and doing better. :hugzz:

I have sometimes had soreness and swelling after my targeted massages. Had one on Wednesday, and yesterday was quite sore. Feel much better today. (I did feel wonderful right after the massage--I usually do, and may then overdo running errands and such because of that.). I trust my masseuse--he did tell me there might be some tenderness and to "take it easy" and do some icing because he really worked on the hamstrings, quads, and IT band this time. I think the massage is helping me a great deal, but I'll report the increased swelling next time, and he'll adjust. He always asks about the appropriate pressure he is exerting, and if I say something hurts, he does back off and go at it another way.

I suggest you try another massage if you're game, but let the masseuse know you were concerned about what happened after the last one.

Good to know @Polkadot. I will try another one in a few weeks as I thing it will be helpful in the long run. I know this masseuse and we had a good convo prior - and she asked throughout how I was feeling. I did not have any issues during the massage and will tell her about the post-massage swelling and discomfort. And like you, because I felt good afterwards I did some additional stretching which may have also contributed. She suggested I also do some work with the dreaded foam roller due to the extreme tightness in calves, hamstring, and IT band. I have had to use the foam roller at times prior to surgery for tight IT band which aggravated my hips so I guess I will have to dust it off. OUCHY!

Good to know about the swelling and tenderness post massage as I have one booked next week. I will let you know how I make out!

Hate the foam roller, especially the contortions one has to do when using it on the ground.

Do you think the foam roller helps?

I have not used it since surgery @sistersinhim and may start with a rolling pin so I don't have to get on the floor. I have had success using it for tight IT band previously - rolling on my side from the top of the hip down to the knee. It is not a comfortable thing to do - quite ouchy in fact. But it works.

While it can be 'ouchy' I found it worked well for tight IT band. I hope it works for you again. I also had a PT do a deep massage in the area. It hurt when she did it but felt much better afterwards.

My experience with therapeutic massage is lengthy, over 20 years and I could just copy and paste Polkadot's comment. It's "normal" to have some ouchy repercussions up to 48 hours afterwards, but then, hopefully, Nirvana!

Typically, I will feel a bit sore that night and possibly the next day. If it lasted longer than that, I'd mention it and ask for lighter pressure on the next visit.

Don't give up on it though, especially for IT Band issues. It's very helpful in the bigger picture. Pinky swear!

I'm going to try the foam roller. I still have a very sore medial side of my tkr leg. This might help me. Oh, not to mention my poor, old sore back! Thank you.

Much better today @Pheebs52 so just as you and others have noted. I will report back next week after I spend some bonding time with the rolling pin and foam roller this weekend.

@kmak81230, do you lie on the floor with the foam-roller or rolling pin? If so, are you able to control how much weight you place on it? That can really hurt with full body-weight. :oyvey:

@Pheebs52 - since I haven't actually done it yet on the floor yet I expect I will have to take that into account and stick with a chair if I can't control the weight. I do not plan to use the rolling pin on the floor - I think that would be brutal at this point. I think I can control the weight with the IT band rolling but will have to try it to see. As is my norm I expect I will overdo it and be complaining about my swelling soon thereafter. :snork: I think at almost 15 weeks I am ready to give it a try. Your note about managing the weight is a good one - thanks!

@Thesoutherncook - yes, I did hydrate prior and after the massage - another good reminder. It was only 30 minutes but still important to keep hydrated.

Yeah, you need good upper body strength to manage the foam roller weight distribution on the floor. When I had IT Band issues post bionic hip, my PT showed me how to roll it standing up, while leaning on the wall instead of lying on the floor. It was much easier to control pressure that way.

Well I am clearly not as strong as Notorious RBG (and probably weigh twice as much) but hopefully can manage - I like the wall idea too. You are a compendium of knowledge - thanks much. I will look forward to finding the best positions for each of the ouchy rolling movements.

Impressed with you walking around SF with all those steep hills. I live about 2 hours away from San Francisco, and won't be there for a while, until I feel sure on my feet. Enjoy. It's a beautiful city!

Thanks Ruby! It took me a few days to recover and I walked rather slowly with my cane - it's a beautiful city.

I am exhausted trying to catch up with everyone! You really need to consider giving up your membership in ODIC! :snork: Of course, they probably had you sign up while under the influence of narcotics and you inadvertently checked off the Hotel California clause box! :rotfl:

Glad to see your thread again. Visited last night and couldn't find any thread but mine. I hope the rolling pin works wonders.
