Hi Kathy,
I'm glad to see you are doing better. :yay: I'm still on the pre-op side so hadn't been following your post lately. It sounds like you have been through a lot and are on your way up. It is good to read on the recovery side too and see how upbeat everyone is through all the pain and other difficulties. I am not worried. Ignorance is bliss, eh? :spin: I've taken care of two friends in our home after TKR but this is different since I will be going though it. Anyway I have been keen to see how you've done since you had your TKR right after I came on the forum. So glad to see you coming along so nicely.

Thank you, Jacky. This certainly is a learning process. Also, I didn't think Ray would be able to handle me being out of action for so long. I thoughty he would tire of it after a couple of weeks. BUT he has been marvellous, catering to my every need with lots of patience and pandering to my bouts of grumpiness, though they have lessened of late. And I found that now we are more patient with one another. So I have learnt that I shouldn't have judged him so harshly :heehee:

Thank you too, rlwintin. I certainly think it is good to come on to the pre-op side when you are waiting. You can then prepare yourself for all eventualities and not be frightened at all because you will have learnt that what you are going through is all perfectly natural. Yes, sometimes ignorance is bliss. I haven't been able to watch a video of an actual TKR and I know I won't be able to for some time even now. It would freak me out. Maybe in a few years time....

It's so good to come on here and read that we are all going through the same problems or have done in the past. In the wee small hours when pain feels so much worse I turn on my iPad and log onto to search for the answers that I need to make me feel better

Kathy every time I say that I have had a good day and think I have turned a corner, the next day I am suffering again so I am keeping quite from now on. If that's possible :kittykiss: :heehee:

Don't think I am ever going to be brave enough to watch a video on TKR op :yikes:

I know, Linda, it's certainly a roller coaster. Thanks for your lovely e-mail. I'll reply to it soon :friends:

Where ever did you read that priceless bit of nonsense? You know you shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet - except on BoneSmart, of course!

You can ice as often and for as long as you feel it's comfortable. I kept my Cryocuff wrap on until the water lost its cool and often I would refill it as well.

Upright is best for knees, recumbent my chiro looks like about because, according to him, he has a steady stream of clientèle with back problems from recumbents! But do read this and find out how absolutely crucial my bike was to my recovery! Knee recovery - UK style

Oh, I too, had heard that priceless bit of information, and from a PT no less!! (not my regular PT thankfully, he straightened me out)
The only thing he mentioned about time limits were that icing for LESS than 20-30 minutes was not sufficient.
I had my ice wraps on all night, and when they got warm, I replaced them too.

Keep the ice on as long as its comfortable. If that is round the clock, then go for it!!

Kathy,
At PT they had me try both to see what was more comfortable to me. Like Jacky I have bad back problems and chose the recumbent for the back support.

I was told that the reason PT's recommend little and often and for no more than 20 mins is because ice directly on the skin can cause frostbite if left too long. However if you use the right equipment or use something like a tea towel between the skin and ice you can ice constantly with no problems.

I agree that you should keep the tea towel (what a cute little word) under the ice---I could never stand ice directly on my skin. I used to ice for an hour or two at a time--mostly because I would fall asleep once I settled down with the ice and elation!!

Thanks everyone. I shall go back to my normal way tomorrow. I should have known really, when the guy who wrote this said that hard PT was the only way to go forward!

I have a recumbent bike and I really like it, but I have used both. I agree with the others, if you can test the options before purchase, it would help fit what you need.

Good luck, you will be glad you bought it!

Dawn

I bet that sleep was refreshing! I had a couple of those days and wow, getting a huge block of rest is so good for you in every way!

Also, I must say that I have a hard time believing there is a grumpy Kathy in you!

Take care,

Dawn

Me too but i expect there is a ' grumpy' in all of us when we have had enough of pain and swelling etc .

I had an upright stationary when I was recovering from my BTKR; now I have a recumbent stationary at home, but at the gym I use both. My two "outside" or "real" bikes are uprights. I agree with the other folks. Try them on for size and see which one you find to be more comfortable.

I had an upright bike but found that it did bother my back. Both my OS & my PT recommended the recumbent bike. The PT had one in his
office and I loved it, so I got rid of the bike I had and bought the recumbent. I agree with others that say to try them and decide which we you most confortable with.

We have an upright bike and bought an oversized seat for it, and it is still very hard on the crotch after pedaling for a while. So I bought a recumbent, and it is really comfortable. I did, however, have to drill an additional hole to be able to adjust it closer to the pedals----I am 5' short.

Ha ha Dawn and Linda - you are too kind :heehee: I'm not a morning person, so then is not a good time to catch me and also when I'm very tired. Having said that, I'm tired most of the day with the meds and that tiredness isn't making me feel grumpy, thank heaven :heehee:
