Hip Infection* Izabel, Walking on Sunshine

The time has come ... for me to go home tomorrow. :yay:

By 9.30am this morning I had had shower, breakfast, bloods and X-rays. Doc didn't come till 1.30ish with good news. Very pleased with X-rays (4 done standing up front and back) and CRP down under 2! I will know tomorrow re staples out, etc.

I thank you all again for the never-ending support and encouragement. As I started here in the Knee Forum, then segued to the Hip Forum and finally migrated to the Infection section, I plan to stay around and continue to give any advice/encouragement to others as has been given me.

Time to change title please to ... Izabel, Walking on Sunshine

Oh how wonderful that everything looks great and you can go home:egypdance:
We are going to get your thread title changed for you and I am so happy you are willing to stay around and share some advice, support, and encouragement with others. It is what makes this forum special!!!!

Doh, excitement is getting to me ... it is supposed to be Izabel, Walking on Sunshine (corrected it above).

Updated your title for you, the smily emoticon did not transfer to your title.
Glad you are going to be home soon!

What a beautiful title you've chosen, @Izabel . May you continue to walk on sunshine in sunny Portugal. Good recovery and greetings from the Frankfurt area, where the daffodils are now blossoming - Constanze

 Got home at 5.30pm yesterday. Have to take antbiotic Ciprofloxacin twice a day for 8 days and the dreaded Lovenox injections in stomach daily! The Nurse changed dressing before departure with Doc present. Slight bleeding from 1 staple at top so he took out another staple next to it to release more blood. They gave several days iodine/gauze/waterproof tape and hubby changed this morning. Doc said to come Friday or Monday morning without appointment so he can look. Actual followup and staples (31) out 2 April. Scar looks good and I feel good ... except for the poo struggling! I am not on pain medication, just Paracetamol (Tylenol) in the morning. I am walking heel to toe with walker very slowly. Only about 1cm leg length difference now. On 50% weight restriction and 80% bend for 6 weeks. Am on only 80% due to that's all he 'pushed to' during op not wanting to cause damage. He said it would be a longer recovery than normal given my problems over the past 17 months.

Last night I slept from about 11.30pm to 6am when I woke to pee! The bathrooms are too far away so have a bedside commode chair which will also sit over the toilet and has a padded seat cover to 'hide' it. Very cheap from Amazon. I tire easily though, guess it is still the anaesthetic in system. :sleeep:

I plan on taking it 'easy' for a few days just doing the essential but at least now I am on my way! :egypdance:

I'm happy you're resting comfortably. There's no place like home!
You've been through a lot. I'm sure that's why you're tired.

Slow is how we will do it then right?
Your Bonesmart cheerleaders are by your side and I'm hoping you feel better and better every day.:roseshwr:

Went to see Doc this morning so he could have a look-see and a bandage change. I am having a slight blood water leak at the top and he removed 2 more staples to assist drainage and of course is being cautious about further infection. He thought all looked good and expressed some more. Said he'd have it tested ... but not sure what from, the cotton swab? He hopes he will not have to do a washout/debridement but said that would not happen till after 4 weeks. Said to stop by again next week any day mid morning but Thursday for checkup again, no appointment.

Stopped on the way home for McDonald's fish sandwiches and I enjoyed the sunshine on my face.

PS Doc said the Lovenox is possibly a culprit for the blood water leak ... I had wondered about that.

Have a peaceful weekend everyone. xx

 ... it's me again but with a question about my knee.

As one may remember I went in for a hip revision and came out with a TKR with hip revision to be done six months later after various fractures healed.

During that six months I could hardly limp with a walker due to a 5cm LLD. Then revision happened and infection was discovered, spacer inserted and instructed no weight bearing. Therefore, poor knee was getting zero exercise. At ten months I managed to achieve zero straightening.

Now, I am only allowed 50% weight bearing with new hip but my knee hurts now when hobbling, the old rubber band below knee. Physio in hospital said tendons/whatever under patella tight and need time to stretch. It's all so frustrating. A catch 22 scenario.

Any advice to keep both hip and knee happy?

@Izabel Sounds great you are getting out and about. I shall think of you when I am whipping round on my crutches! I also had a knee replacement on my hip replacement side, even now with no hip, I find stretching my leg and knee straight from sitting the best exercise. I must do it 20 times a day but without realizing I am doing it, the same as my ankle turns and foot stretches help the most I think they are ingrained from years of being given exercises when in bed in hospital.

I guess you need to keep the bend and straighten with that knee they stiffen so easily. Hopefully the draining will stop and I am sure you will gain so much healing with your beautiful sunshine. Big hugsxx

Hi @Izabel
I hope you had a nice Friday. Let us know how your appt goes next week. Hopefully your incision stops weeping and dries up like a good little wound should.

Let's see what the forum expert, Nurse @Josephine recommends in regard to your question above in Post # 231
Enjoy the weekend!

Really? Did you agree to have the knee done instead of the hip?
after various fractures healed.
After what fractures healed?
Any advice to keep both hip and knee happy?
None at all. Many of us on here never did any exercises at all and yet we got really good results from our knees. Exercise is not necessary for TKR.

@Josephine Yes, my husband, Surgeon and I all agreed knee first as it was determined both needed doing as Surgeon would not do both at same time. It would give time for fractures to heal.

A CATscan revealed osteosynthesis material in the left hip joint, with the presence of an anterior parietal fracture of the left acetabulum with a dislocation of an anterior bone fragment measuring 44mm in diameter, a fracture of the femur and also a fracture at the level of the left greater trochanter with some bone fragments present, about three, the largest measures 35mm with a spacing of about 7mm. An MRI revealed a subluxation of my patella. Turns out it looked like a 'piece of lace' according to Surgeon.

Now that LLD has been corrected from 5cm to 1cm, I am walking heel to toe, but not having walked in 17 months it is slow going with balance and a definite lack of confidence.

It will definitely take some slow rehabbing to get back to good but I am so glad you are back on two legs:dancy:
Might be that many on forum don't notice from your signature that you had a really serious car accident resulting in pelvic injuries after first THR.
You have been through So much.
Let's keep this slow and easy and No Falling!:bignono:p
Hope today is a Good Day.:loveshwr:

I wanted to say that I appreciate neither knees nor hips need exercise ... except walking, which I have not been able to do being bed/wheelchair bound for 17 months so could not perform normal daily activities. I know it is an uphill battle but thought others may have hints and tips to ease things, as dear @clodaghcov has proffered.

It is two weeks today since op and one week home. Doing my 10 minutes on the peddler, full rotations and several little walks with walker. Hip fine, no pain, knee giving grief. Wound still weeping 'blood water' but easing off. I seem to have a permanent slight tummy ache with the Ciprofloxacina (mentioned it to Doc last Friday) so taking Omiprazole and today loose poo but I finish it tomorrow so have put myself on the BRAT diet. Plan on seeing Doc and Nurse (both cuties, have seen this Nurse with knee, spacer wound and now, a 'he') on Friday morning, no appointment needed.
So, we are getting there at a snail's pace with hiccups along the way, but better slow than never. :climb: :sigh:

I know you get tired of the slow pace but only been a few weeks since your last procedure...my dear friend.
I am so hopeful for all to start smoothing out for you...and Fractured for that matter.
Keep posting...let's get through this, and know there are folks that are behind you all the way.:friends:

Good luck for appointment today. Hope that drainage is slowing as I'm sure that is worrisome!
Hugs @Izabel :roseshwr:
