Infected knee removed

I love the scooters. I can feel the air rushing thru my hair as I buzz down the aisles of Walmart! One day it broke down in the middle of the store...there I sat and there was NO roadside assistance.

Glad you are getting out

Yea, Mike!!! I'm bettin' you were making "vroom, vroom" sounds on that scooter as you tooled around the store. Gotta keep in practice!!! No popping wheelies, though!

Hi Mike.

Glad to hear you're doing ok and are managing to get out and about a bit. Bet you enjoyed being in that scooter! I wonder if your scooters are a different design from over here. I couldn't use one as it would have meant me bending my leg which was an impossibility. I had to make do with a wheelchair with my leg stuck out in front of me on an extension, which, while being a bit of a liability, was also a good aisle clearer!

Hope the visit to the OS goes well on Wednesday.

That happened to me once! Oh the ignominy of being pushed through the store like a wheelchair!

Scooters are wonderful!!! I have my own and I love it for use in shopping centers, museums, and even the long halls at work.

Mike, I am glad you are doing better and wish you continued recovery.

Saw my OS yesterday he removed the staples and said that the knee looked great. It is amazing how much better it feels and it almost looks like a normal knee. Went back to work part time. I am now scheduled for the revison surgery on March 17th

Mike,
That is great news!! So happy for you. You have been through enough. Now it is time to get ready for some summer time fun.

That's really good news Mike. I'm so pleased for you. Linda x

The pain level is nothing compared to the tkr walking is done with either a walker or crutches not supposed to put any weight on the knee. movement of the joint is kinda rough lots of grinding from the cement spacer. I am hoping to be able to get back to work part time in a couple of weeks. I could not do this without your support and of my wonderful wife Sandy she is taking very good care of me. Today I'm just going to relax and watch football playoffs!

Mike
Hi Mike,
Glad to hear you're doing well with the infected knee gone. I might be looking at having the same procedure done and it scars the **** out of me...My knee has become infected after having a debreavment done on my original TKR. I'm on 6 weeks of antibiotics through a PIK line and we'll see how that gones. What were your symptoms and how did you decide to have taken out.

For me at about 2 months out from the TKR my knee begain to swell and was stiff and painful. I suspected infection but I could not get my OS to check for it he just kept saying that does not look like an infected knee. He finally gave in and checked and sure enough it was infected.

After seeing two different OS and an infectious disease Doc and based on how long the infection had been in the knee the best option for curing the infection was to remove the implant. It was a very difficult decision maybe I could have cured it with the debridment but the odds are low. I hope I made the right decision.

I wish you the best.

Mike

You made the right decision, Mike. Debridement sounds like a good option but you can never be sure - it only takes a few microbes left behind in a little nook or cranny to start the whole thing up again. Not worth the effort. I wouldn't have it done, not no-way. I'd want that sucker out and the joint space properly cleansed before a new one was put in. What's the point in half measures?

Josephine, I know I made the right decision it's just in the back of my mind I just wonder if maybe I could have saved the implant using methods other than removal. It's just that the whole process is such a devistating setback.

Mike

It is, Mike - but so is having the smaller procedure and then finding you still have to do the entire thing 6 months down the road. Another 6 months of unnecessary pain.

Mike,
I am sure it must be hard for you to have to go through all of this. It is hard not to try to out guess yourself. But Jo is so right!!!! It is best to get it completely out and cleaned up!!! This way you start with a New Start. Not a well now we will have to keep checking it out to make sure we got it!

Dang Mike,
That does not sound fun at all.
BTW, who is going to win today.
I am a Bronco fan.. have seen several games in person.. watched a playoff game in the old stadium once with my son right before going snow skiing and got food poisoning from eating a hot dog...
It was a wild ride up the mountain after the game.. my son kept saying his felt funny, we were driving through a snow storm.. I started feeling funny too. I thought it was altitude bothering us..
By the time we got to the condo in Keystone we both could barely walk inside and the girls had to unload the car by themselves..
Talk about a rough week of skiing.. sick all week until the day we went home felt great..
That game was great and good thing is the Bronco's won the super bowl that year and made getting sick almost worth it..
Thought I would share a story with you in hopes it makes you feel better somehow. I have not eaten a hot dog at a game since and never will. Yuck:cry:.
We are big fans of Colorado.. go to Colorado Springs area all the time and son and law graduated from the Air force academy a few years back.. my nephew is in the AFA now..
Wish you recovery soon.

Pilot, I am a Broncos fan as well, although I am getting tired of being disapointed year after year. We love CO we have been here 16 years and it is now home. We moved here from Idaho and most of our family is still there our kids have grown up here and we now have 3 grandchildren so it is unlikely that I could get Sandy to live anywhere else. I'd like to live somewhere where I could ride year round.

Mike

Well, its been a little over three weeks since the removal of my implant, I have three more weeks of antibiotics. The knee looks great and feels good. The swelling is gone along with most of the pain. The only pain left is the waiting around. I was able to get back to work part time 20 hrs this week.

Mike

Sounds good Mike. I can imagine all this waiting is driving you crazy. So, in three weeks, is the plan to take out the temporary knee and put in the new permanent knee? Hang in there!

Mike, I know this time has just dragged for you, but God bless you, you've stayed positive. It won't be much longer now. I'm so glad you are doing so well.....it is sounding like the infection is not going to be a problem any longer. You're still in my prayers!

hey Mike it all sounds good from here........Keep your head up and keep going forward you will do just fine....we are all pulling for ya...........
