In pain, confusion and uncertainty after 4 months

Yes, I'm determined to to just that. Another thing that bugs me (beyond the fact that I can't put much weight on the joint itself) is that since surgery I have had a naging pain in what I shall desribe, after scouring my own anatomy book, as the ishial tuberosity. The pain cries out when I try to lift my upper leg from the hip (I can do some leg lifts with the leg fully extended) There is no sciatic nere pain (I had a small bout of that when I used to run), and the pain is only at the base of the ishium. The OS and the PT's have looked at me strangely when I try literally to point this out to them. It did not occur after my first THR. I wonder if anyone has had this experience or aggrevation after surgery?
Thanks, Jim :sigh:

Yeah...my PT sez that that's the hamstring insertion. I had pain there after both surgeries.

She also sez that if you are swollen internally at all you have to sit a little rocked back and not so much on your seat bones (e.g. the ischial tuberosities).

I had to get a well padded chair and put a memory foam cushion on it.

Uh, huh, I'm sitting on the foam right now, and I got another cushion for the car. I'm thinking I'll eventually buy enough cushions to place everywhere I sit, including the resturants I frequent. Thanks so much for your comments. Jim :thmb:

Jim,
I am following your story and I wonder why your not in your car driving??? You may not need cushions for restaurants because somone may be able to help you have a life again. :DI get the feeling your afraid of offending your Doctor by seeing someone else. Please don't feel that way, because what is he doing for you? :evil:You are entitled to another opinion and getting out of pain. Please don't worry about hurting his feelings if that is what is bothing you. You need nothing from him to see someone else. Call your medicare supplement and ask them if your entitled to 2nd opinions, unless you need referrals, then you have to ask your primary for one. Get and go!!!
Don't put this off, the pain isn't worth it!!!

Sunshine, I'm joking about the resturants although I did carry a cushion into one of them knowing that the seating was really hard. Actually I am working near full time-fortunately I make my living sitting, talking and listening to people. It's just that I have to use the walker to get around and use the cane in really tight places.
Thanks so much for your added input. I visited with a good friend of mine yesterday, an M.D. psychiatrist who endorsed all the opinions I am getting here. He said, "Go, go, go!-go ahead and get another opinion. Dont' worry about your current OS".
I will check with insurance, as you suggest, to see if they will pay. I think I am willing to pay just to get another opinion. If I am facing revision so be it (of course, I'd like someone else to pay for that).
I hope to schedule in Lubbock, TX this week (also suggested by my friend) which means I'll make a 200 mile round trip. But I am eager to get help, and in my gratitude I will gladly take a picutre of the Holly gravesite as promised to Josephine (maybe I'll put in a Holly CD on the way).
Thanks again, Sunshine, for your advice. Jim :thmb:

IMO medical professional whom I am paying work for ME! And I will fire them if necessary.....

I don't think that Medicare would have an issue paying for a revision if a surgeon deemed it necessary and can support that. They have to pay for revisions on a lot of people whose original prosthesis has just worn out.

And even if you have to pay for a second opinion - it will be totally worth it.

One assumes that you are going to a revision specialist for the 2nd opinion?

Oh I'm glad you're going to see someone soon!
I hope you're not facing a revision but in the long run it would be a lot better if what you're dealing with isn't going to improve! :thmb:

I am doing my best to find a revision surgeon. I believe there is one in the place I am investigating in Lubbock, TX. I will be on the horn tomorrow making sure. Thanks for the input. Jim:thmb:

Yeah, anything is better than where I am at. I was feeling good and brave enough this morning to try out the cane, but it just doesn't work for more than 4 or 5 steps. I just got back from my own shopping trip-had to get some meds, some man-tools and gas up the car (I got to stay in the car through the car wash). I even circled the car checking the air in the tires with my walker. But all that is tiring. I hope I have some pro-active news and scheduling to report tomorrow. Thanks for your comments.

On top of this there was another older fellow in the pool who is suffering from muscle deterioration/damage from taking LIPITOR for years (the surgeion had me stop iit suddenly about 3 weeks ago thinking just then that it might have a bearing on my discomfort-but who knows?). I began taking it as directed by my cardiologist as a preventive medicine for cholesterol (my cholesteral is not high) about two years ago.
. Jim:pzld:

Jimbo...get the word out there about LIPITOR. It is a dangerous drug and should be banned. I only had one dose before the right side of my chest became paralyzed. Of course the pig-headed doctor who prescribed it denied that it would be Lipitor but I had looked it up on the 'net and peripheral neuropathy is one of the potential side-effects. He even condescendingly wrote to my GP that my belief had been influenced by reports in the "popular press." Reports in respected medical publications are hardly the "popular press".

In addition, when I was in hospital for THR one of the nurses told me about patients she had nursed at a previous job who were crippled from Lipitor and could not walk. I also suffered an attack of amnesia, also attributable to Statin drugs. A different physician recommended I take EZETROL as it has fewer side-effects and works differently to control cholesterol by preventing the re-absorbtion of the cholesterol in your system. It does not interfere with the production of cholesterol which your body, including your brain, needs to function.

I'm not a medical professional so I may have the facts a bit confused but the bottom line is: There is plenty of evidence which shows that LIPITOR is dangerous. So what if it only affects a small % of the population. Do you want to be part of that small group?

Two years later I still have difficulty breathing as it is a struggle to get my chest to expand sufficiently to take a deep breath.

Good luck with your second opinion, Jimbo.Jenny

Jenny, I was doing my last rehab session walking around in in the pool last week (they discharged me after the session), and there was a older fellow walking around next to me. Being the gregarious guy I am, I struck up a conversation with him, and he reported that he was in rehab as a result of muscle deterioration officially attributed to 10 years of taking LIPITOR. He had a much harder time getting out of the pool (descending/climbing stairs) than I did. :shk: I don't know if I should generalize my thinking about Lipitor, but that was an eye opener. for me. I have at least shared my own experience with the drug with other folks.
I spent the morning and early afternoon (in addition to working) to gathering and faxing requested operation notes to a physician in Lubbock, TX for his consideraton towards seeing me for a second opinion. As I got to read the notes, the 1st physician indicated that everything went well in surgery, but described me as "retired" in his biographical description of me-another sign that he doesn't here me too well. Of course whether or not I am retired probably doesn't have much importance in his focus and my need for surgery, but I can't help but wonder if thinks I am on easy street in my condition. In fact, I was slogging around in a cold rain on the walker yesterday getting to work (I am self employed full time and do contracted work in an agency) and to where I needed to go for the records.
But I am pressing on to see someone else (-got to call this morning as see if my fax got through). My Texas-big (125 lb), black Labrador Retriever, "Pete", is trying to bolster me this morning for the day with big, sniffy, wet kisses (I can't find a doggy smily face to puch in here). Thank God, I did an adequate job in training him seven years ago. Thanks so much for your input. Best wishes, Jim :thmb:

Personally, I prefer this one

Jim

I read your thread and am somewhat shocked. You are too Patient.

When I started looking for doc to fix my hip pain (originally groin injury) I found 2 types. Ones who knew what to do and those that did not have a clue. Your current one does not have a clue=inexperience.

Find an experience doc and get it fixed. You will know when he says lets do this to fix that. Done deal.

Sorry about the problem, hope I do not have to go through that.

Jim, I certainly appreciate that there are people who have problems with any drug...Lipitor included. But, as with prescribing any drug, your doctor should weigh risks with benefits before giving it to you. Your post indicated you didn't have high cholesterol, but were given Lipitor anyway. That makes no sense to me and maybe there is more to the story. If that IS the case, you are wise to stop taking it as a "precaution."

I took Lipitor for over 10 years with no problem. Eventually it got to where it wasn't helping my cholesterol as much and my doctor switched me to Crestor 8 years ago. I have had no problems with it either and all this time my cholesterol has stayed well within range.

All drugs come with warnings and risks. As a patient, you must be aware of the possible side effects and watch for them. Communication is very important with the doctor prescribing them.

Good luck with your second opinion.....I think it will be helpful for you!

Hi,
Waiting to hear about your fax you sent to the Doc's????? No pressure just concern:D
With a dog that big you can get on him and ride him to Lubbock!:shk:
I stopped taking the Lipitor also. Didn't realize so many problems with it.
Anyway Good Luck!!!!!!!!:dogkiss:

Sunshine, et. all,
Thanks for the concern. Good news-yestderay the Lubbock doctor agreed to see me, and that could be as early as tomorrow (03/18). I just have to gather more history, and gas up the car. Hooraah! :D
In reading some of the other threads as well as my own op notes from the last surgery, I wonder if I am making up for a lot of detected deterioation on my bones, making weight bearing on the joint more difficult. -sure is easy to spend free time just speculationg. :sct:
I'm taking the low-end-luxury Nissan (Infiniti) to Lubbock. My bud, Pete, :dogkiss: has to ride in the extended cab (in his pro-active stance he refuses to ride in the bed) in an old truck we have, otherwise he takes over the wheel. His idea for my treatment is to meet some of his advisors with a short drive and walker-stroll to the local dog park. -hope I can get some more direct input from the new surgeon.
Thanks again, Jim :thmb:

WHOOOOHOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! Don't worry about everything, the Doc will get it and tell you what is what.:thmb::thmb: I am so excited for you...Good luck and will be praying you get answers! YES!!!
