@IMs,
How are you. I have just read up on your post, just know that everyone's recovery road is different. I am sure you are glad to be rid of the hip pain
Take care
Kim

I am sorry I haven't been back for soooo long...I am looking forward (?) to the LTHR on April 27; my sincerest prayer is that they again agree to spinal anesthesia because I do not want to go in for GA.

God willing, I will NOT 'play truant' from the forum again! Profoundest apologies again, all the best and God bless!

Dr. Eric Smith (OS, Tufts, Boston) and his team did a wonderful job on the right hip and I am sure he (and they) will do the best on the left...

Dr. Radhakrishnan and the anesthesiology team did assuage my fears by 'giving' the spinal, in spite of my obesity!

Belated thanks to ALL at the forum for the kindness and concern showered upon me THROUGHOUT!

God bless ALL of you ALWAYS!

Warmest regards and very sincerely,

IMs

@IMs -- I am right there with you with a surgery date of Apr 27th! I too will have surgery in Boston. I just went through pre-op this morning and now the slow 2 wk wait. Best Wishes on Red Sox opening day -- it's a beauty!

@wcgirl ... great that we have surgery the same day. I wish you all the best and hope you have a smooth surgery, a speedy recovery and a comfortable rehabilitation!
God bless!

Hi @IMs Just read your thread. I can't BELIEVE your'e going for spinal again when you were 100% aware last time:yikes: ... I had GA first time around as I was terrified of being aware AT ALL and was toying with spinal for hip 2 as so many people have "assured" me that you are fully sedated.... until I read your thread!!!

No way I'll risk it... I'll go with GA again, it was really good for me anyway, went under before going into the OR and came out clear headed, no numbness etc..... so not worth the worry of hearing/feeling/smelling anything (I've had surgery with spinal block before, no pain but those other factors traumatised me!!) Good to know the anesthetist I saw at my pre op appointment first time around was at least honest when he said I "probably" wouldn't have any awareness - or more precisely said I "probably wouldn't remember it".

I feel a bit bad as my sister is having a THR today and I encouraged her to have spinal... I told her I had read good reports from spinal/SEDATION, with only one or two peeps saying they had not requested enough sedation to put them right out, nobody had said they couldn't get it to work! Technically true, at that point I hadn't read your thread. Leaves me forewarned and forearmed for my next op anyway, so thank you very much for being honest and pointing out that it can not work - it helps me be strong when I stand my ground re wanting a GA:eyebrows:

Hope your surgery goes well, you know some of the pitfalls now... for one thing I'll bet you drink gallons of water and are already stocked up on the prunes :SUNsmile:

Best wishes @IMs for 27 April, you may like to browse these articles as you may not have received them :).

Nutrition plays a huge part in surgical recovery, in fact it is one of the 'forgotten topics' of recovery..

The following is a link to an article which provides the current science regarding the healing beneath and around the implant and approximate timeframes for the healing phases and processes which is medically acknowledged and the relevant nutritional information for each phase.

Healing Phases & Nutrition

This second link is to other nutritional articles which you may find interesting, including one relating to bone health.

Thank you @craftdee and @Poppet ...I was/am NOT worried that I could hear/see/smell the whole surgery with SA...my biggest fear was (and is) going 'under' GA! What I heard/saw/smelled (100% awake and talking during the surgery!) was a piece of cake compared to my phobia (real or imagined, I don't know...and don't care!)...

I didn't want GA, and the Good Lord worked it out in such a way that I didn't get it!

On April 27, too, I do NOT want to be under GA, and I would 'welcome' spinal anesthesia!

My surgeon and anesthesiologist(s) are top-notch professionals...kudos to them for 'operating upon' someone of my girth...and medical/physical 'issues'...

Thanks for the links, @Poppet ; I shall, eventually, get to them...

Warmest regards, prayers, all the best and God bless ALL of you ALWAYS!

Horses for courses @IMs :heehee: I'm a bit worried you feel I was criticizing you and/or your decision making re anesthetic... I really wasn't... just sayin' :) I don't know why the hearing thing bothered me - I'm SO not squeamish usually; I was fine with having the procedure I had with the spinal block last time... but I was unprepared for the smell - mind you I'm not sure the surgeon saying "do you hear that sound like hamburger sizzling? That's you!" added to the angst or not - as I was quite open and jocular with him prior to that perhaps he thought it was levity :snork: just didn't work out like that, I had managed to 'divorce' myself from it until then I suppose, but once he pointed out it was ME that I could hear/smell being burnt something primal kicked in... now I have the sort of phobia you describe; and phobia being by definition "an unreasonable fear" of something I guess there's not a lot to do about it.

My sister has had her surgery now, has had an awful time coming out of it... not what she was expecting with Spinal... so it must be the Sedation element that plays that role; she was very foggy and "blugh" all day yesterday and vomited until 3am.... which could be the pain meds and nothing to do with anesthetic I suppose (?) She thought that as sedation is "just going to sleep" that coming out of it would be "just like waking up" :shrug: and is a bit upset that it's not. My thought is that if "going under" is a real concern for you (phobias are real :heehee:) then you may be as well to opt for no sedation from the get go this time around - you know you can handle it (and 'that despite your BMI you CAN have it) so go for it I say :yahoo:

Oh @craftdee , I do NOT feel that you are criticizing me or my decision about SA! No, not at all! I just waxed eloquent about my inordinate (!?) fear and how it all turned out (for the best: for me!) on surgery day...

Please do NOT even spend a second more on this...I wish you all the best of health!

I am praying now that the anesthesiologist be able to 'find' (after a wee bit of probing in Aug. 2014) the spinal 'entry-way' to administer SA to me.

Warmest regards for you, all the best and God bless!

@IMs

Three more days to surgery...am to report at 1 PM...the surgery/recovery/rehab do not weigh on my mind as does the type of anesthesia! Here goes my perpetual refrain: I do NOT want general anesthesia!

I request prayers for my days ahead: thanks a BIG bunch in advance!

All the best and God bless!

Very sincerely,

@IMs

Think you must be about ready to "go" @IMs (gets a bit confusing, this international date line thing :heehee:) Just thought I'd wish you all the best... got everything crossed that you get the anesthetic you're hoping for:wink: Look forward to seeing you back on the recovery side

Donna :flwrysmile:

Thanks a million tons, @craftdee ! I really DO appreciate your kindness and thoughtfulness!

Praying that the Good Lord be with you and ALL your near and dear ones...as also with Fifi and family...

Warmest regards and prayers,

@IMs
