THR I'm just a pup at 3 wks post op. Am I normal?!

I find it so interesting that PT isn't required in other countries outside the US! They push it here in the US.
Not at all! We have just as many zealot surgeons and PTs here in the UK and all over the globe! It's surgeon dictated, not country

BTW, can you please make your font larger. It's ghastly trying to read such small text.

I think it Font size 2 and you really need size 4

Glad your feeling better but it's frustrating when you still have limitations and feel you can do more but your body still isn't there yet. I have that all the time with RA - I feel okay- lets do 500 things and then feel awful for weeks after lol
my recovery should be a breeze if I'm so used to it hey? (Haha probably won't be at all).

I apologize. I was just posting an update. Good to know! Also didn't realize my font was small-looked big on my computer so thank you!

@dandy_candi - I was in so much pain before the surgery. It was effecting my job, my sleeping (yes I was having trouble sleeping before surgery too!) and it was the same thing; I had to choose between doing things and participating in...well... Life or not hurting and doing nothing. Since my THR I've had discomfort but not 'pain' that's was anything close to what i was having before. Pain is so hard to gage too. Before I would rate my pain very high and powered through it when others might stop doings things. I'm sorta stubborn like that. I think that's a lot of why I find my "over doing it" because compared to before I'm great!! Your recovery I'm sure will be great to if you are having some of the same experiences I was!

Hi all! Doing well today. I have news... I AM SLEEPING! IN MY BED! Yessssssss! Still using a ton of pillows but I'm in my bed and sleeping so I'm happy. Today was a bit challenging with the "post -op blues". I live in Maine and after having amazing weather (for Maine this time of year) we just got 10" of snow dumped on us. I just woke feeling "frumpy" and grumpy from the weather and the fact that I had no energy, I didn't want to even get dressed. I still am unable to wear jeans because of swelling and have lived in sweatpants/comfy pants which are not flattering and just make me feel....blah some days. I also feel so guilty. I feel good but helpless at the same time. My husband goes to work all day and then comes home only to help me out with things. He doesn't seem to mind but I just feel GUILTY. He really a pretty amazing guy and I'm thankful for him. This recovery is just tough on me it's tough on him as well... Just in a different way. Well, thank you for letting me rant! Fingers crossed this snow melts!! I had flowers coming up! Hahaha

Oh no! snow!... I'm sick of winter, so glad the sun is out here and its pretty albeit a little cold lol, hope you start feeling better soon.. Our daffidyls are bloomed. Hope the snow melts soon for you..

Just read through your thread and wanted to say hello! I totally agree with the way life changed due to my hip problems, it was like I had to pick and choose so carefully what I would do because it had to be "wirth" all the pain moving was going to cause!

Glad you made it to your own bed. I am 9 weeks out and still start in the bed and move to the recliner around 3 am when I get uncomfortable. Have a good night!

RTHR 1/15/2016. Posterior approach. Due to AVN. LTHR in my future.

FOUR WEEKS POST OP! Pretty much same ol', same ol'. Looking forward to warmer weather to get some walking outside in. Able to go longer distances without my crutch but lovin' that ice pack and a lot of breaks throughout the day. Swelling continues to go down and stay down for longer periods of time but is lingering. Incision looks GREAT! I can't believe how knarly it looked and how pretty it looks now...Pretty for a 8" scar at least. Pain is minimal and has moved to new areas of the hip. Mostly in my groin and mid thigh still. Now I'm fighting the feeling of being sooooooo stiff. Hip precautions are still in effect and are still (and always will be) a challenge but mostly because I just forget about them because I feel good. 4 weeks is still not that far out and I'm not out of the woods yet. Sleeping has been better and I'M IN MY OWN BED. No more couch for me! I'm down to 7 pillows now and I still need help getting all situated. I'm sleeping about the same amount, a few hours here and there but I'm in my bed so I'm happy. Thanks again for all the healing vibes! Happy Spring!!

I think I turned a corner with my hip! I have been able to be on it a lot more, barely any pain just tired mostly. Still icing for swelling but thats diminished too. I had to run around different stores yesterday with my Mom to prepare for Easter and I was able to go through two stores without a crutch. I used one for all the rest of our running around not due to pain but fear of pain and over doing it. I was just tired when all was said and done! Finding my quads are very weak. Able to go down stairs normally but going up I am barely able to perform step up on the left. So that's a work in progress. Sleeping has been great down to only FOUR pillows! Yay!!!! Pain with hip flexion movements. I'm so happy about this. Still being careful about not over doing it ☺️

Hope everyone has a very Happy Easter!

@HIPpieGal7 welcome to BS. It is a wonderful forum. I've enjoyed reading your thread. I am out 3 wks tomorrow. I had posterior method. I am walking more but I have been so tired. I take a few naps during the day. I also have swelling in my leg and stiffness. Icing helps a lot.

My husband didn't have a problem picking up my prescription. You were so brave in standing for so long waiting. That really was uncalled for. Sorry you had to go thru that.
Have a good evening

Five weeks post op today! No crazy changes but back to no sleeping agAin :( Tryinf to work on strengthening my quads because I am unable to go up steps still "normally" without increased upper extremity support. Hardly using my crutch at all! Pain is more of a discomfort in the groin and some mid thigh pain. So nothing crazy as far as changes. Still loving the ol' ice pack! 6 week post op appt next week!!

Glad you are progressing so nicely in your recovery! Sorry about the no sleep. I didn't get back to sort of "normal" sleep until 6 weeks and in my blissful side-sleeping position. Enjoy that ice!

Hi hippiegal
I'm also 5 weeks post op. I can't walk up and downstairs proper yet, I'm thinking if you are the same maybe it's quite normal at this point?! I can't wait for next Thursday when I can sleep on my side, I keep switching between bed and recliner in the night, I'm shattered!!!
When canI have a bath any ideas?

I'm a week behind you but I cannot do stairs normally either. Still have to step each foot on every step. There is bad pain in my knee if I try to lower myself down an extra step and it just feels really weak. I guess I'll just keep waiting for that to subside? I don't know if there are any exercises to do to help strengthen those muscles or if you just have to wait for healing.

@Jetmints they told me once the incision/scar is "just a pink line" then you can submerge it for a bath. So as long as it is fully closed with no scabs or anything left, you are okay to take a bath.

Still have a bit of a scab at one end, so maybe I'd best wait!! I feel like a 2 year old learning to do stairs again, but I guess our bodies will tell us when we are ready to do one step one stair at a time!!' It's so Frustrating age 54, my brain thinks I can run up and down stairs without thinking but no My body just can't do it!!!! I think talking to you guys is actually making me feel A bit wreaked??!! Josephine could do with your input at this point!!! I have been keeping strong for years but now after my first operation (apparently my right hip will need replacing too!) I am feeling g quite vulnerable and a bit low!! Lost my job as a teacher and now kind of coming down after LTHR !!! OrdinarAlly suffer from Clinical Depress and this is t helping!

@Jetmints keep your head up! I'm going through this at age 28, I work on a skilled nursing facility as a physical therapist so dealing with hip replacements is an everyday thing so I thought I was in good shape with dealing with this. I have so many up and down days feeling sorry for myself, not wanting to get dressed because it's just such a pain and takes more time than before and overall feeling down and frumpy. Then I think about what life was like before, having to choose what to do and what not to do depending on how much pain I wanted to be in. We're all here for you and are here with open ears to help with what we can. Finding this forum changed things for me as far as that goes, hearing everyone else experiences and giving each other tips.

Sorry to hear of the bad days you've been having @Jetmints and @HIPpieGal7 . I hope you will both be able to see the strength in each other and know that you are strong and can get through this. It's only going to keep improving and you will have bad days but on those days just know your body is telling you to slow Down and to rest. Try and put your mind to things you can do- I am still pre-op but find colouring (a new craze I know) can be really relaxing and distracting. I put on some music and just grab some pencils and just colour away. Focusing on this can help pass the time and allow your mind to settle. Hope you have a good day x

I threw at strop the other day at how long it took me to shower and get dressed and then I had to sit and cry for a bit. It was so silly because I've faced bigger problems quite cheerfully but I'm still emotionally all over the place.
@Jetmints Did you see the thread at the top of the page for post-op depression? If you're really struggling I bet there's lots of support there.
Most days I am not bothering with proper clothes. I bought myself a few pairs of pretty cotton pyjama bottoms and I wear those with a t-shirt and cardigan over the top when I'm at home. I'm looking forward to the weather getting better so I can just drop a maxi-dress over my head and be dressed!

Thanks guys it's good to hear that it is normal to have bad days, I thought I might be slipping into another episode of CD!
Hippiegirl age 28!! That's a bit harsh, bless you and here's me moaning!!
I will have a look at the depression thread see if that can help me put things into perspective.

Haha @Zelda I have my "nice" sweatpants for going out and then my fun print sweatpants for home haha. But hit a huge milestone today! I was able to get jeans on! I haven't been able to get them on because of swelling and just pain of the tightness of the legs. I'm happy! :)
