Great thread title Grammy! I've been out of touch for quite awhile due to browser/computer issues so I'm playing catch up but your thread caught my eye and I had to stop and say hi! With your positive outlook you'll rock this surgery thing! Looking forward to following your progress on the other side.

From a BTKR alum to a soon-to-be, my thoughts and prayers to you on your big day. After you get to the "other side", I will teach you the BTKR "secret handshake.":spin:

Heidi, I'll turn up the music really loud!! Glad you are doing good, thanks for checking on me. Take care and get your dancing shoes ready!!

Thanks for stopping by, Lori, and for the encouraging words. And Tim, I look forward to it!! Thanks to you also for the well wishes. All prayers are graciously welcomed!!

Warm and happy wishes are being sent your way. Just think, after tomorrow you will be heading into recovery and moving toward a new life where your knee is not in control. Will be thinking about you!!

Thanks so much Cathy. Hope you are still doing great-I'm sure you are. You have such a great attitude as do so many other on here. Take care, see you on the other side.

Grammy,
May you have a blessed recovery! And don't forget to put some chocolates in your bag to entice the nurses to your room....guaranteed!

Thinking of you today, and happy for you the waiting is over. Put on those boogie shoes :egypdance:

Well gang, those boogie shoes will definitely have to wait a little bit! My Surgery was Friday and move to rehab center today. Pain is staying pretty good but slept thrust one dose last night and boy did I know it! But finally got it back in control and so far so good. Don't know how it will do as I begin therapy. I have a couple of questions for those who have been thru it. Now I'm a plus size lady and was wondering how long it took some of you to push up and stand up by yourself. I'm just so scared that I can't do it or my feet will slip out from under me. Any suggestions? Also, of a more personal lady type question-I can get to bathroom and get stood up afterward, but m having a difficult drying and cleaning the area when don e. there seems to be no way to do this and I need suggestions.thanks to all of you and for suggestions you might have.

Deb,
I too am a plus size lady - 5'7" and 278lbs. I worried a lot pre surgery ( I'm now 8 weeks post surgery) about how I would be able to take care of myself - such as using the bathroom and showering. I did not have a BTKR - just had the right knee done. But, I learned the operated knee was very strong and stable right from the start. Other than the expected discomfort, I really didn't have difficulty standing or walking. I am sure others will also jump in to give suggestions. As far as the bathroom " issue", I can't help you there. I guess with only one knee being done it has not been an issue for me. But, this forum seems to always have an answer so I am sure someone can help.

Hi Deb! Great to hear from you. Moving to rehab will be good for you, improvement every day. As far as pushing up and standing, I assume you mean standing with the use of your walker. The nurses and PT should be showing you exactly how to do that. The more you do it, the easier it will become. You want to make absolutely sure that each person helping you in and out of bed knows how to handle your feet and legs. I was very surprised to find that many of the nurses, especially in rehab, were completely unaware of how to handle helping me out of bed and getting my feet to the floor. I had to instruct them how to do it. As for the lady type question -- you have your walker in front of you while on the toilet, before wiping go ahead and stand up with the use of your walker, the hospital should have some very nice wet towelettes that you can use, hold onto your walker with one hand and wipe with the other. I know this doesn't sound lady like or dainty, but that is the best way.

So glad you are finished with the surgery and moving on to rehab! Hang in there, do what you can, and you will be just fine!

Hi Deb:flwrysmile: , good to hear from you, It's all a bit of a trial and error experience, but as Izzie has said the nurses should be helping you at this stage, I had a large frame walker and it had arm rests so made the whole experience alot easier, alway have your legs out infront of you (nearly straight) once nearly up try and shuffle back with your feet, get the nurses to hold onto the frame and pull yourself up, it will take some doing but take your time. Also toileting, Izzie has the answer. With showering I used a seat with arms and just managed while sitting.

It will all take time and energy but you will somehow work out which is best for you, I'm still using the raised toilet seat and still don't think I would be able to get off our toilet without it.

Hoping the staff are treating you well.
Thinking of you

Hi Deb - Just thinking of you and hoping you are relocated into rehab. You'll be busy every day with PT and OT - take advantage of it and stay as long as you can. Big Hugs to You!!!

Deb, so good to hear from you and glad things are going well! Sounds like you're getting some good bathroom tips too. I only had the one TKR but getting up off the toilet was a challenge at first. In the hospital the PT told me to push myself up using the toilet seat as leverage. Once home that was a bit harder, I think our toilets are lower so I confess I had my husband come in and help me.... :yikes: poor man, not terribly romantic but TKR recovery is no time for romance anyway right??

Take care of yourself and keep those boogie shoes close by,
Heidi
