THR Hipmom is healing

Thanks for the kudos, Donna, but it's really not that clever. Knowing how carefully surgeons check leg length during and at the end of surgery, I know it would be highly unlikely any half decent surgeon would allow himself to make such a differential happen. Plus we've seen it happen this way so many times on here.

But I am delighted you fell into that group and that your differential is minor enough to be corrected by some PT.
Now you know it's doable you will be sooo motivated! :thumb:

Great news, Donna!! Sounds like the PA really knows his business! Wishing you the very best success with new PT and the lymphatic massage too.

Hi Donna,

What a fantastic report from your appointment yesterday!!! Please do let us know what the PT does to help with the pelvic tilt, I have that issue as well. I am also seeing a chiropractor once a week, in the hopes of helping with some of the tilt/rotation issue -- both the spinal adjustment as well as soft tissue massaging.

Even though you might feel like you have been doing nothing as you waited for PT you were really letting your body heal without the added stress of PT and now it will be better able to handle the new challenges of exercise & stretching. I went into PT at 10 weeks, found it helpful (with a few set backs) and then crashed and burned about 2 months out of PT on my own exercise plan. Now I'm back to resting -- maybe if I hadn't started PT so soon I'd be in better shape now.

Much as we don't like the cane (I'm back on mine too, at home) it really does help with that limping lurch. You'll probably get some strengthening exercises in PT that will help as well -- like the clams. Sounds like you have a great game plan all set & good support from your PA/OS. Good luck on Monday!! :thumb:

Take care,
Cardie

Thank you, everyone for sharing my excitement. Jo, I could see the pelvic tilt myself - what I couldn't do was believe that it could be fixed. I know you told me, but I doubted  I have been this way for soooooo long.

Well hopefully you are a doubter no more and now a TRUE BELIEVER. This shall pass.....and you will be even MORE thrilled when it does.

Absolutely - but no-one said it was going to be easy! Sometimes, not always, it is a very hard habit to break.

I went out walking today. Haven't really been out walking since early December because of being tied up getting ready for the holidays. I was treated today with seeing a family of bald eagles - one adult and 2 juveniles. Look at all of the wonderful things I missed from all those years of avoiding walking!

Hi Donna

How wonderful to be out walking and reconnecting with nature.. So good for the soul :)

I enjoyed our short trip to our beach house (even with the little mouse critters). We have a sea eagle that regularly rides the thermals right in front of our house.. Very therapeutic. Hope you get to enjoy more walks xx

Donna

I so agree with you about the joys of walking - it just feels so darn good!

I am sure the physio will sort the pelvic tilt in due course.

Take care

Oh....I love eagles. They are such a spiritual and regal bird.

WOW! You go girl! What a fantastic report! I can't wait to be able to walk without pain. They just discovered 2 Snowy Owls in our area. Apparently limings are in abundance and the Snowy Owls are coming to feast on them! The bird watchers are either happy or not, I couldn't figure out the post...

I finally started PT on Monday to try to deal with the pelvic tilt / rotation. I was so excited to go and a bit disappointed when he didn't seem very enthusiastic while I explained my pelvic tilt and approx. 2" difference in my leg lengths. I brought my X-rays on disc and told him that the doctor thinks my actual leg difference is @ 3/8 - 1/2" and the rest is due to my pelvis. He didn't want to see my X-rays.

He said we could try a few things for @ 2 weeks, but if nothing was happening, I shouldn't continue. I know that he didn't want to give me false hope and he wanted to be honest with me, but it put a damper on my excitement to say the least. :cry4:

He looked at my difference. He said that my muscles were very tight - especially one that goes from my backside around and attaches to the thigh. They hooked me up to an electric shock thing and put a big heating pad on my hip for @ 15 min and then proceeded to do a deep massage along my incision. He explained that the incision needed to be desensitized and that the scar tissue needed to be broken up (or something like that). All I know is that it was very uncomfortable! I still can't lay on the op side and I have a pretty good pain threshold. He only worked on it a few minutes and suggested that I try to massage it at home also to loosen things up.

He put my foot up on his shoulder, reached under my backside and gave a yank (presumably on my pelvis). Then he did the same on my other side. This didn't hurt at all. He looked at the difference and said that he thought I was a 1/2" closer! :yes 4: Now I was excited and I think he was, too! I could actually feel the difference! He warned me that it may only stay that way 15 minutes or an hour, but it was a sign that it could be moved closer to position. :yahoo:

I couldn't believe that in 5 or 10 minutes of his actually working on me, I had noticeable improvement! I was thrilled to say the least. I couldn't wait to go back on Wednesday!

Yesterday we went through a similar routine. Monday's adjustment had reverted back - I'm not sure how long it stayed. But Wednesday's adjustment brought my legs even closer together and held there from 9:00 a.m. until at least 3:00 p.m. On Wednesday he gave me 2 exercises to do at home to work some joint where the pelvis meets the back. When I stood up on Wednesday, I immediately felt like I was standing more evenly on both of my legs. I do this very unscientific measuring of myself by digging my thumbs into the top of my hips and I could see how much closer my thumbs were than that morning!

I had been playing around for awhile by standing with my "short" leg on different size books in front of a mirror to see how much it would take to even out my pelvis. The book I had been using is @ 2". When I got home I was able to stand on a book that was only a little over 1/2". Did I mention that I was ecstatic? :thumb:

I went down and walked 2 miles on the river path. I even had to lower my adjustable cane down a notch to make it fit me better and be comfortable. My daughter could see the difference when I picked her up from school just from the way I was walking. Unfortunately, it didn't stick all day, but I know it stayed longer than it did on Monday.

The PT said not to expect to have my lengths all the way evened out - he wasn't sure that would ever happen. I told him I was excited to have any improvement. If I still need to get a built up shoe, a 1/2 to 1" is better than 2" (funny how your perspective changes, isn't it?)

I go again tomorrow. He will give me more exercises. He only wants to focus on the pelvis for now and then he will focus on the rest of the muscle strength in my legs. I am so happy to finally be doing something :dancy:

Oh wonderful Donna! I can feel your excitement too! I am feeling the same way for you! Any little improvement is an improvement. Good for you!

When I first started reading your post I was about to say find another therapist but I can see that he was just being honest. I think he must have been as excited as you. Stick with him as he certainly seems to know his stuff. Fantastic :yahoo:!

Remeber too, you are not even five months post-op and did not have a stright forward THR. I firmly believe that it takes a year to fully recover. Keep positive and you will see a lot more improvement I am sure.

I felt the same as Janet....ready to tell you to move on to another therapist. But....this is very promising. Please allow yourself LOTS of time for your body to readjust before you give in to lifts. It can take months to undo what took years to get there.

Wow Donna, sounds like you found a real gem!

Just curious, what kind of exercise did he prescribe?

What a great report, Donna!!

Even though it doesn't feel really good, massaging your incision spot will help the fascia to release and that will also change the way the muscles in your leg/back/buttocks work. You don't have to make yourself cry in pain, just do little periodic massages during the day or at bedtime. I eventually could tolerate rolling my cane over the spot as things loosened up quite a bit.

I fondly remember feeling so much less gimpy in my walking at the end of PT sessions -- enjoy it, you are doing great! :thumb:

Take care,
Cardie

Great news Donna!! I can tell by the way you sound that you are more than thrilled by this. The closer you can get to being equal the better and you seem to be getting there. It sounds like your daughter was probably just as excited seeing you walk even better.

I hope each session brings more and more improvement !!

Donna you really do seem to be pulling in the right direction now and things seem to be great.
Your recovery is doing well keep up the positive feedback.

Billy
