THR Hip Replacement-9 weeks still limping

Teresa, if taking the week off doesn't leave you feeling better, consider taking more time.
Most, if not all, of the exercises you listed are ones the forum Nurse, Josephine, often recommends are not useful or necessary to a successful recovery. Josephine comes with 50+ yrs experience in Orthopedics so she's seen it all. Keep in mind that your body experienced a "controlled" trauma which it is healing from. Another way to look at your recovery is this - if you sustained your injury through an accident, would you feel you needed workouts to heal? A lot to ponder and definitely a personal choice but worth one worth careful consideration. I hope this week brings healing, comfort and restorative rest. Have a great Monday!

Barbaraj - Yes my PT was too aggressive and did not watch me closely enough. I need a bit more individual attention not just one size fits all. I have scheduled with a new PT at a different facility. I think this place will be a better fit. They also have a Wellness program that I am going to enroll in. Glad to hear that you are recovering nicely. Thanks again for your encouragement.

I've noticed many times that when people start right after surgery with frequent, intense PT, they often reach a point where they are having pain, often worsening, that they probably wouldn't have had if they had taken the first month or two off altogether and simply rested, walked, and gradually returned to normal.

As @Barbaraj mentioned, at that point, some like me just keep on staying active and are able to recover with no PT. Others, like her, like working with PT, and returning to the gym as soon as possible. For many of us, after the hip has healed, we still have pain in other body parts that we end up going to therapy for much later.

But what holds true in all scenarios is the importance of NOT ever pushing ourselves, or allowing a therapist, to push us to the point of pain and strain. If your PT isn't carefully monitoring you and listening to you, then you need to advocate strongly for yourself, or find someone else. My doctor, like most of the Bone Smart forum advisors did not feel his patients should do PT right after surgery. He said it wasn't necessary or helpful, and always would be an option later after the initial healing had taken place if it was needed. But it seems there are some surgeons out there who automatically recommend PT and their patients start right up and move into some pretty intense things very quickly, as you did.

I recently started seeing a PT for a sore knee that I aggravated after some serious hiking this summer. When I did a dumb thing and tried to do the slip and slide, hurting my ribs, he said I should take a few weeks off of PT to let that soft tissue heal before trying to do the exercises. I would think taking a week off for you probably isn't long enough if you are going to let your soft tissue heal more. And some of those exercises with weights, and squats----yikes.....I wouldn't do them. I hope you come up with a plan that you feel comfortable with, and helps you truly recover:)

I have exhaled and prayed and ready to get back on course. My chin is up! Thanks again
Great attitude and Way to Reset.:)
You might find out that you are progressing much faster once that leg no longer is forced to perform before it is ready. Some of the PT you have been doing is intense enough to last you for the next 3 weeks:giggle:
Lots of folks cheering you on, @Teresawebb :yay::yay::yay::yay::yay:

Good morning, @Teresawebb So happy to read you've found another PT and I hope they'll take the time to listen to you and how your previous experiences did not only work but, if anything, made things worse! I hope the new folks are much more compassionate and observant and will work with you more gently and get you back on track again. And having a wellness program is another nice benefit as well. Cheers, and happy Tuesday!

Good Morning and Happy Tuesday Teresa
Wishing you luck with your new PT and the wellness program
Please update here and let us know how it's working out for you after a time.
Until then...all the best to you!
@Teresawebb

TW,

I have read hundreds of threads on THRs ...had two myself.

I have heard no one report PT, other than VERY basic supine exercises, were helpful, but MANY report increased pain.

My advice at your stage - stop PT (except basic stretching), walk as comfortable, get off narcotics as soon as possible, enjoy friends and food, did I mention walking? And, ICE and ELEVATE 4-8 times a day.

Feedback your experiences to your doc ... PT bad at this point. (assuming you are in good health)

Hope you have been taking it easy and are already strong some improvement.
It can be hard to balance advice from our health care professionals, and friends, and online friends.
I found the advice from those who have "walked the walk" the most helpful. :friends:
Many of our issues are to be solved with time for healing...
Hope your weekend is restful :ice:

Just checking in to see how you are doing with scaling back and resting more. I hope it is helping.
I also hope you are having a good start to your weekend!!

Thanks again for all of your feedback. I went to my new PT and really like their approach. The assessment was an hour long. This will really be PT that is individualized to meet my recovery needs. It will include aqua therapy , regular PT and massage. I start aqua therapy tomorrow. I will see how this goes. I have continued to walk.i am also thinking about pushing back my return to work. Fingers crossed. Thx again.

:fingersx: my hippy pal!

@Teresawebb Your new PT sounds like they get it! Can't wait to hear how it goes for you.
Good for you for initiating this and asking questions.
I just hope you wait and rest your poor over worked hips a while longer.. but that's just how I would do it. You gotta do you!
I am one of many who will be very interested in how you progress. :) :-) (:

Hi @Teresawebb
My hips were done 3 1/2 months apart, my last one being August 21.
I went to a very cookie cutter PT at first. They caused me too much pain so I quit.
I looked around and found another PT whose approach is entirely different.
My first visit was 1.5 hrs of my history, my goals and an exam from my therapist. He says he wants to challenge me but never cause pain. He often says I am not in athletic training but recovering from a major surgery, and that is the way he proceeds.
It has been very helpful. He has watched me walk too and gives advice and exercises for that. But says the healing is what it is and cant be rushed. I would look around if I were you. This PT had glowing reviews on line as well. Good luck!

Glad the new PT place has a more individualized approach, @Teresawebb, and you feel some confidence going forward that it's a good match for you. As I've commented before, PT can be great when you've got a good therapist, but bad PT sets so many people back. Fingers are crossed for you that things will go better from this point forwards. Happy Hump Day!

@ahipgma - I am so glad to say that my new PT is very much like yours. I had an hour and a half assessest. We discussed my goals and development a plan that works . I was shown and given 3 exercises and I have completed 1 aqua therapy which I really enjoyed. They also encouraged walking and have nutrition classes available. I think this is the place for me. Thx.

Great to hear you feel encouraged with this new PT.
Just keep listening to your body and it will tell you what it is helpful and what is not.
Have a great weekend!

Thanks again for all of the support and encouragement. This recovery is much more than I expected. I am learning to listen to my body . Have a great weekend.

Hello and Happy Friday!
I hope you've found a match. Just remember, if it hurts, STOP.
You don't need workouts now, you need to heal. Wishing you all the best and the reminder we're here if you need us,
A great weekend to you!
@Teresawebb

I have now had 3 encounters with the new PT. Assessment,Aqu Theray. and Traditional. I have not had that feeling of being hit by a bus. I feel as though they listened to me and built a program for my individual needs. I am so grateful. I will be going twice a week. Gait training was also incorporated. send deep tissue massage. I feel better and I am walking better. Light exercises at home and walking. Now just hoping this. feeling of having a large hunk of metal in my hip area starts to subside. I go back to work Thursday but am going to limit my hours. Today I am feeling very encouraged as I entire week 12 of this entire process. Again this thread has been a life saver. I continue to read others stories and it helps with putting all of this into perspective. Have a peaceful day.
