TKR Hip & Lower Back Pain

The pain is gone!
:happydance:That’s what it’s all about! Now for the pesky hips…
Sorry to read that news. Stick with us for the same great support when the time comes. Thanks for the update and best wishes!

Thanks guys! It’s another month & now the right hip is hurting. Ugh! I stopped my PT because the people there felt really disrespectful, even though the therapist was great. I have been through enough & don’t need the aggravation. Might choose a new place. Not sure. Definitely opted to wait till after the first of the year for hips. Dr said he will give me more cortisone & I found that when the hips are good the back pain is minimal to none.

Has anyone still felt tightness at 11 months? I went to my first concert the other night & I feel like my knees are swollen from it. Normal? I walked over 6,000 steps & was really walking around a lot. Progress, but I feel like I’m paying for it.

Like one of the posts said. When oh when…

Thanks again for all the support & I hope all are coming along & doing well!♥️

Yes, totally normal. New joints tend to complain after any "firsts". Ice and elevate. This should ease fairly quickly.

It can feel like the minute one joint settles- another one starts up.
I am still doing regular pilates with my teacher- now mainly concentrating on my lumbar spine/ core strength.
My teacher has loads of great videos free on YouTube. Google Katja pilates.
She has a side lying/ no squats glutes strength one which really helped my leg strength post op. Her lower back one is also really good once you can 4 point kneel for short periods.

Totally normal makes me feel better! 6,000 steps doesn’t seem like a lot, but it sure is when you’ve been excited abut 3,500 for the last year.

Hi everyone!

It’s been a while & I just passed the 1 year mark on my 2nd TKR & month 14 in the 1st one!

Let’s start with the good stuff & my normal questions!.

1) Things are settling down, everyday I am getting more flexible & the stairs are getting easier to climb!

2).I can’t believe that I can sit for dinner or a movie & get up without stiffness or pain!!

Here come the questions!

1). Do you feel like you walk slower with these new knees & does that ever change? When I am trying to cross the street, I feel like I am going to fall if I go any faster & I know that my 81 yo godfather is faster than me.. God I hope this improves!!!

2). Has anyone been walking and all of a sudden your knee feels like it just gives out from under you? I have had this happen several times & thank God I have caught myself!♥️

Now for the bad news!!

I have been getting cortisone in my hip joints & bursa for the last 6 months. It really relieves the back pain. Turns out that replacing my knees & straightening my knocked knees changed my gait and made my hip dysplasia flare up!!!‍ Sweet Jesus!!! I went to my follow up last week & she showed me my hips & normal hips.. Turns out that instead of softballs in my sockets, mine were square!! She really recommended that I up my hip replacement to March. So, here we go again and onto another forum!! I am still in disbelief! I just turned 58 & before my next birthday, I will have all 4 knees & hips replaced. Ugh!!!

Is there a forum for the bionic woman?. Is there a place I can share about both?

This too shall pass & I swear that I’m gonna be an amazing 60yo!!. Keeping positive thoughts!!!

Any hope, feedback or experiences are always much appreciated!!!

Luv to you all & hope that everyone had a fantastic holiday

♥️♥️♥️

Yes there is - BoneSmart! We have lots of members who have had multiple joint replacements. There is even a thread in the Social Room called Four (or more) Replacements Club. Unfortunately those of us who suffer from arthritis often see this horrid disease move to other areas.

BTW - I had my first THR at your age. It is actually fairly young for THR according to my surgeon.

Stick with us here. Spend some time on the hip side. Rumour has it THR is an easier recovery.

Hi everyone!

It’s been a while & the knees are improving!!
It’s been a year this month for my 2nd TKR & 14 months for my first one. I’m getting there, but I have a few questions!

1) I went to the mall today & did about 4,000 steps. My newest knee is sore & swollen. Is that normal? It doesn’t seem like that many steps after a year.

2) Do you feel like you walk slower with these new knees & does that ever change? When I am trying to cross the street, I feel like I am going to fall if I go any faster & I know that my 81 yo godfather is faster than me sometimes. God I hope this improves!!!

3). Has anyone been walking and all of a sudden your knee feels like it just gives out from under you? I have had this happen several times & thank God I caught myself!♥️

Any shared experiences or insight would be much appreciated! I never know if I am behind or all this is normal & just taking time.

Thanks!

I have not had my knee give out but once is a while my first knee (at a year and almost 11 months) still swells. On the walking, sounds like you could have a balance issue which a lot of people have. I made the most progress with balancing with Aquatic PT. Luckily we are working on that again with knee #2, both on land and in the water. I wonder if you could go back to PT and just do balancing?

As to the knee giving out hopefully someone more knowledgeable can answer, although I have seen this mentioned in other threads.

Sounds like you are doing fairly well but I hope you can resolve these remaining problems soon!

I think the feeling of your knee giving out is just a time thing. As you use them more, the muscles will strengthen up. My situation is different than yours, but I have to be careful or I'll overextend. I think you need to be aware that the buckling feeling is natural and will get better.

Thanks so much. Knowing that it is natural & part of the process really helps!! Thanks so much!♥️♥️

I am sure that balance may play a part in this. After my bilateral TKR, my hip dysplasia was diagnosed & I am having the left hip done in March.

Thanks for sharing your experience!♥️♥️

Good luck with the hip, and hopefully your recovery will be easier and more complete this time!

The beach sounds wonderful! Just going outside for a little while helped me on those days when I was feeling down. Depression is real. Try not to blame yourself or compare yourself with others when you are struggling. The fatigue that accompanies this recovery can be so draining. When you can, figure out small treats for yourself. I have even made lists of small treats that would lift my spirits and then referred to them on a bad day when I couldn't think of anything. My list included stuff like a new color of nail polish or a bubble bath or looking for a pretty rock in the yard or cleaning just one window or trying one new vegetable, fruit, or spice from the grocery. Yours will be different, but just anything new or different or self-indulgent can feel like rewarding yourself for persevering. Best wishes and let us know how things go.
