Hip arthroscopy done - not good

I had a hip arthroscopy on 20th January 2011,

I had an anterior and posterior labral tear and saw my surgeon this week who said I have signs of arthritis as well.
Jamie, this was her surgery. :WINK1: THR is in the future.

Nothing to report I'm afraid other than I am getting an urgent mri (in the next 2 weeks) with results 27/4/11. Need to limit being on my feet too much. But my husband fell off a roof today and is in a wheelchair in hospital waiting for x rays for his left hip - may be able to be the first married couple on here ..... cross your fingers not!!!:cry4:

That's awful...Fingers crossed he's ok.....and I'm glad you've had doctors orders to keep off your feet more. I'm sure you'll feel less pain if you rest up. Hopefully you will move forward once you have the MRI results.
Take care - Lisa

Hang in there, Sarah.....I'm praying for you and for your dear husband!! I hope you both are okay very soon.

Oh no, to quote the cliche, it never rains but pours. My Dad did exactly the same as your husband, fell off the garage roof, he has a half hip replacement! Mind you, that was about 15 years ago. He walks better than I do :snork:.

With regards to you, good, I'm glad the Doc said you should stay off your feet more. Can you take more time off work? I did kep wondering if that was part of the issue, I wouldn't be where I am now if I hadn''t had the time to rest as I did. Please please do as they say.

And good about the MRI, at least that's something. Will it be an MRI or MR arthrogram? (with dye injected in the hip).

Keep soldiering on Sarah, we're all thinking of you.

Well, he spent the evening in hospital where they took x - rays of his hips and thankfully said nothing was broken. However, he can barely put one foot in front of the other. Last night he was screaming in pain just trying to get into bed - we both thought we were going to have to call an ambulance - I thought maybe he has a break in his leg ??? Anyway he finally got into bed and today he said - he thinks it's a little easier - but I think he's trying to stop me from worrying as I woke up at 3am with a raging sore throat???? I think it's stress related so I've gargled with some salt water and hobbled into work:sigh: Of course my hip's giving me agg today but when I look at my husband I realise I'm better off than him at this present moment ..... it's the last thing we need - he just went back to work Tuesday after 4 weeks without any work due to the trade he works in being so slow. Being self employed, its been very difficult without any money coming in so we were so glad for him to get back to work .... then this happens :hissyfit: Still awaiting my mri appointment ..... looking forward to that!!!! (not)

Oh jeepers! Whereabouts is the pain he is experiencing?

Hey Sarah, what a bummer with your hubby's accident and your problems. All the best for your MRI, and I hope your second half will recover soon.

Josephine, my huband landed on his left hip. Now, he didn't see the x ray but they said there was nothing broken, but I'm really worried as he just cannot walk normally - he hqas a massive limp and is still yelping in pain on certain movements - he can just about get by with taking the tramadol regularly. He has even said he still thinks there may be something broken amd he plays most injuries down. Do you think this intense pain he has is purely due to internal bruising ?..... can it be that painful? I don't know what to suggest to him - I'm sure they wont do another x ray - they will say there is no need ...... oh dear .... I can cope with my own pain but hate to see others around me suffering ..... it's really stressful :cry4:

Sounds a bit excessive for bruising.

Who viewed his xrays? Was it just the A&E doctor? It's not at all uncommon for A&E people to miss undisplaced or covert fractures. I think you should go back to the hospital and request an appointment for the emergency fracture clinic. Or you could get your GP to do a home visit and refer him there as an emergency. Most hospitals have daily fracture clinics so he can go immediately.

Sarah, you and I both had traction for our ops, no large scar or cutting off of bones etc, our post op pain was almost all internal soft tissue damage. How did it feel in the first week or so compared to what your husband is feeling? I certainly couldn't walk without yelping at times in the first few weeks, and definitely not without crutches. I was told it was the internal bruising and bleeding. Does he have crutches? Sounds to me like he'd benefit from keeping some weight off the leg for now, or at least reducing the amount of weight through the hip/leg. And lots of ice, often.

I also had a serious fall when I used to ice skate as a teenager, I didn't break anything, but I was swollen and bruised from almost waist to knee on one side and it was agony for a while. I can't remember how long for, but I had to stay off school for a bit until I could walk better.

I hope it does improve for him soon, but if it's still really bad, maybe a trip back to A&E is in order?

Dear me, you two are having a bad time of it aren't you.

Well tried to speak to orthapeadic dept but there was no one there but spoke to a and e and asked for someone to double check the x rays which they have done and they have assured us that nothing is broken so it has put our mind at rest for now. Maybe he has a torn labrum like I had??? Anyway, thank you for the advice Josephine .... you really have been a great help :friends:

Torn labrums don't usually occur from such an accident. And you still don't know who looked at the xray and decided there was no bony injury.

Well thats good to know. What happened is .... I tried to ring the hospital to speak to someone in the orthapedic dept about reviewing his x rays. I explained this to the receptionist who went into stunned silence .... I thought I had been cut off, so after a few "hello?'s" she said "I dont really understand what you want or what to do about it" she said "hang on" and put me through to a ringing line which eventually cut off. I rang back - the hospitals maim number whic rang and rang for about 4 mins till the telephone co. cut the call off. I rang again and finally got an amswer and just asked to speak to the orthapedic dept. I was told -"there's no one there, you'll have to ring back tomorrow" When I asked what time they opened and closed - I

OOOPS!!! ....... was informed 9-5. It was about 4pm - She then told me "but I think they must have gone 'ome cos no one answers" That's why my last resort was A&E...... It's farcical isn't it??? I couldn't believe it was a professional establishment that I was trying to speak to ..... god help us all

Not really. There are two possibilities in the clinic: that they had a quiet afternoon and decided to finish early (unlikely!) or that most of the staff had gone home leaving a skeleton staff behind to finish off one clinic and they were involved lookng after patients and couldn't get to or even hear the phone. In any case, I wasn't suggesting you did this by phone. What I said was that you got an appointment for the daily fracture clinic which you can do via your GP. A&E receptionists aren't really taught to deal with that kind of enquiry.
