Skigirl I have to say you sound like a new person............Much happier I am glad.....Are you doing much better.....I really hope so.............

Rose,
So sorry to hear that you fell. I found it to be so scary when I fell. I hope that all is well with the knee since Mr. PT did not seem to have pity for you!!!
You are going to see your OS on the 29th (right) Will he be trying to set you up to get your left knee done at this appointment? I hope that you will not let yourself be rushed in to deciding about your left knee untill your right knee can bend enough to get you up out of a chair. I know how much trouble I had at having my left knee done 7 weeks after my right. I would not like you to go through that. And my OS did do a MUA on my right knee at the time he did the left. I feel I would have got more out of it if I could have spent time working more on it in PT but do to a few things with the left knee we spent most of our time in PT working on it.
Now I have just had MUA done on both my knees last Wen. And I still have so much swelling in both knee's that walking and trying to go up and down steps is killing me.
I have been icing like crazy but I am not getting them to respond.
Sorry Rose, I do not mean to sound like a downer.

Thanks everyone. I did order a knee wedge like this one locally at Kerr Drugs to elevate while icing both knees. https://www.makemeheal.com/mmh/product.do?id=10052 It is wonderful! I can even put my laptop on tummy and type while doing this.

I didn't actually fall on Sunday, just fell back on toilet when left foot hit water on the ceramic tile and twisted RTKR. (Sorry to be so crass.) It bruised immediately. Not sure why other than it twisted hard. Still pretty sore especially after pt yesterday. Spending much time laying down, resting, elevating and icing. When I fell at 4 weeks, I was dumped on my rear. Plenty of cushion there, so other than the bruised underarm, I was fine, only shaken up a bit.

Calling, so sorry to hear you are having problems. I will be praying for you. It really does help to know that I am not the only one. Sad, I know.

So many success stories are encouraging, but often makes me wonder what I am doing wrong to cause my limited ROM. If I do too much, I swell and set-back, if I don't do enough, I get stiff.

Monday is my 3 month check up on my RTKR and I will be discussing a) MUA on Right and b) TKR on the left knee, as it is much worse and giving me a fit! :hissy: It sure makes recovery more difficult on the right one. I compare the pain in both and am certain it will need to be done soon. The bones seem to catch when I'm walking. I can feel and hear it when I'm walking. Sounds like rice crispies during pt. I guess I know how clunker feels. Unfortunately mine comes with pain as well.

Thanks Kelly for all the good advice. Seems like you are finding balance. Will spend more time in the pool when my 2 teens get home from camp Friday. The younger ones aren't strong swimmers yet and I need back-up to feel secure with them there. Would be great to go without them, but guilt wouldn't be worth it and they can't stay home alone. Also need my driver. I'm not comfortable yet driving after I exert myself.

We have put the books away for the summer. When they finish their textbooks, we're usually done until sometime in August when we get bored and start again. Spend summers, swimming, playing, choir camp, VBS and lots of hands on activities. I will be doing a follow-up on Australia next week, since we just finished VBS with that as a theme. Had a lot of fun learning and have some great material, just too tempting. One of the wonderful things about teaching my children is that I enjoy learning with them.

My PT has me on the thread mill 7-8 minutes each time I go. He calls it gait therapy. I do have an eliptical at home, just haven't gotten on it yet for fear of hurting myself. So many people depend on me and I am a little cautious about trying new things especially with my teens gone. They (teens) are my legs. :p

My children each have an assigned area in the house that is their responsibility until I'm healed. Makes them appreciate mom a little more. :D

It's the grandchildren that keep me hopping. Shawn (3) is a very busy boy. He loves to climb and can open most medicine bottles. Thinks the tums taste good. Doesn't understand medicine can be very dangerous. Keep the heavy stuff put way out of reach. He was the little plumber who left the water on the bathroom floor for me to discover. :sigh: Gotta love his little giggle though.

Hi Mother of many,
Slow down, take it easy, I know easier said than done, I like you was pushing, wishing my recovery faster than it was happening, I got discouraged. Don't fall into that pit. You are doing great, tell yourself that every morning when you wake up and every night before you go to sleep!! I had partial knee replacement in Oct 07. The things they don't tell you is what ticked me off, but I found this website and was encouraged.

The tenderness takes awhile. I still have what I call numbness from the scar to the outside of the leg, you can feel the touch but its not like when you touch the other knee. My OS said that was normal, the nerve endings take a long time to heal when they make the incision the same direction the bone grows.

When I over do it I get pain sometimes where the KR and bone meet. I think that is just the way its going to be.

Aquatics would be a great idea, I didn't go, (i should have) talk to the facility or your PT they will have super exercises for you to do.

Keep the faith you are doing a superb job. Keep smiling, it will get better, it will get easier. And one day when someone asks you how the pain is you will say, wow what pain?

Had my last pt session today before my 3 month visit to OS on Monday. A little better, but not much. Flex up to 80 (not good for 12 weeks, but better than it's been) and ext to 10 again. Spent a good deal of time resting, elevating and icing this week., so some of the swelling is down.

The one good thing was I can now press 150 lbs. with right leg alone. Up 20 lbs. from 2 weeks ago. My goal was 100 lbs. so at least that brought a smile to my PT's face.

Still have a limp when I walk, but not as severe as it's been. Am able to walk without cane. I asked his opinion of when I could have the left one done and he said I needed more ROM with the right first. He also said it was up to my OS about the MUA.

A little nervous about visit, since I'm not up to par, so to speak. Don't want to be a failure.

I'm really trying hard, but it's like my leg has a block when I try to bend it further. It catches and then shakes when he is measuring it. Felt like it was a little looser today though. Gained 2 degrees both ways. Guess I need to appreciate that.

If the OS says MUA, then I'm scheduling it asap. I have good strength and stamina, but with limited ROM it's difficult to do many things. Walking any distance is painful and causes swelling, so recreational walking is out for now.

Just out of curiousity, I asked him to measure my left leg. I only have a 110 flex in it. It has a good bit of swelling as well. It catches and sticks when I walk. PT said that's because I snapped the miniscus 8 weeks ago.

Have a friend willing to go to the pool with me tomorrow, so I can do some therapy in it while she keeps an eye on the children. Will also be checking out another facility on Friday that offers aqua therapy and excellent equipment if I choose to continue on my own until next surgery. The great thing about it is they offer child care for 12 and under and will allow the children to swim for free. They also have a family changing room, so I don't have to worry about the little boys in the mens room alone. They are getting too old for the ladies locker room, but not old enough for me to have comfort. My husband and teens can also work out with me. This sounds like a good plan for me, so I can save the remaining pts for next surgery.

Thanks for listening.

Blessings,

Bless you Rose. I hope you can continue to gain rom and get the leg straight. Know what you mean about the 3 month check up.
Have mine tomorrow and I am a little antsie. Not sure how he will think I am doing. I don't have the ROM where I would like it. But I don't think he measures. Think he just eye balls it. But it is enough rom for me to do my normal things in ever day life. I am 0 on the leg being straight.

Hoping for a good review.

Rose,
I am just amazed at all you seem to get done!!! I thought I was tough but I think I have met my match. I have got to meet you one day God willing. You blow me away.

Rose, great attitude and determination. I'm with you on getting the MUA if the doc thinks it is needed. Go for it right away and move on, girl!!! You have things to do and a life to live!!!

Ended up taking the children to the park Thursday afternoon. It was way too hot! Not like Kim in Texas, but close to 100. The popsicles I took for the children were already melting when we arrived. The other children at the park came looking for one too. I felt so bad, like I should run to the store for more.

Anyways, while I was on my cell to a friend inquiring about possible night swim at the pool, all the children disappeared. I stood up and scanned the area only to find the 7 boogers in the shaded covered shelter. Here I was melting in the sun on the bench and them in the pavilion. What's wrong with this picture? :sct: Can you believe they complained when I told them to load up???

We ended up getting take out with milk shakes then headed to the pool for a refreshing 1 1/2 hour swim. Because it had been so hot, the water was warm and didn't make my knee ache like before. I like this night swim idea for the outdoor pool. A great way to end the day.

Today I did get to check out the new facility, Quest for Life. WOW, it was awesome. I so want to join. Spent about 45 minutes in the pool walking forward, backward, sideways and cycling like Skigirl suggested (Thanks!). Even did a little swimming. Had the pool to myself the first 1/2 hour. It was wonderful.

They had the rails in the pool and extra stuff you could take in. Best of all they had large cement stairs to walk in, not the shaky metal attachments like the other pool.

They also had a whirlpool. I was in heaven! Even got to check out some of their equipment after I showered. Felt so good! Got to talk to the trainer too. Turns out our children take guitar together. Knew he looked familiar. He assured me as a personal trainer, he could help me get the most out of the equipment without injury. We 4 can join there for about 3 trips to pt. Amazing!!! I sure hope my OS agrees. Would love to work out with my family and save the extra money.

Best of all, I was so excited to get to go, I ran out without my cane. Realized it once I got there, but didn't need it afterall. Another victory!! YEAH!!

Picked up my girls from camp tonight and am so glad to have them home. They were filled with excitement and great stories. Looking forward to spending tomorrow talking with them more. They were exhausted and needed to head to bed early.

Speaking of which, I need to head there too. It's getting really late.

Thanks again everyone!
