THR Have I Done too Much Exercise post LTHR?

Thanks for your kind words in regard to BoneSmart. We appreciate it. We’re happy to be of help and support when needed.

It seems you’re doing really well and enjoying a decent recovery. Good news!
Going back to work at six weeks post op is pretty ambitious. I realize you understand this. We normally recommend a Phased Return at 12 weeks, but understand that is not an option for everyone. I hope at the end of each work day you’re able to rest for the remainder of the day without doing much else...at least for several more weeks. You may find it difficult to adjust and more tiring than you’d imagine. I hope you’ll keep us posted and let us know how it’s working out for you. We’d love to follow your recovery for awhile longer if you have time to share updates.
Wishing you only the best!

Thanks Layla I will rest when back at work it is summer here so a good time to be recovering unfortunately I have no paid leave or I would do a gradual return but I will pace myself, managed a 20 minute walk around the block with one crutch and then rested and felt good. Thanks for your support and I will keep you posted :-)

@TonyBee I returned to work somewhat early as well, one thing that helped me a lot was having gel ice packs at work and a large Ace bandage to wrap the ice to my hip. I could sit, or get up and walk around while icing, it really helped in the first few weeks.

Had my first day back at work 6 weeks after left hip replacement, had been doing quite well although in 5th week as I was doing more pain in lumbar back radiating to knee so can only walk short distances comfortably, work as a mental health clinician so sitting a lot, got up and walked in between patients but quit sore by the end of the day and difficult to sleep with pain radiating into left knee, took panadol and used ice pack throughout the day, will see physio on Friday hoping it is all just because I so out of condition after 4 years of pain and now very unfit that muscles are getting used to change but need to know I am not making things worse. Some reassurance would be appreciated if possible thanks :-)

Sorry put my thread somewhere I shouldn't have and it was kindly shifted, really not enjoying sitting for long periods of time hoping very much this settles over time prior to starting back at work I had been walking short distances outside walking around the house and using stairs and occasionally reclining on the couch so I guess I had more varied movement throughout the day than I get now I am back at work !

Hello @TonyBee
I’m sorry you’re dealing with such discomfort. I felt the same early on while sitting too long so I understand. Is it possible to take little breaks to walk or stretch periodically while at work? Even stand for a bit here and there? Returning to work at six weeks is rather ambitious, but we do understand that not everyone is able to take twelve weeks off, or do a phased return. I hope Physio shares some stretches that bring you relief. Please keep in touch and let us know how you’re doing.

Thanks Layla I have been walking briefly inbetween patients I am annoyed because my hip is actually so much better but lower back pain not fun but I am choosing to think that it will ease as I regain strength and my muscles and tendons etc adjust hopefully my visit with physio will be helpful in how best to manage it. Ice acks are helpful getting a joint replacement changes your body in all sorts of ways ! :)

Third day back at work sat in a better chair so lumba back now much more comfortable and walking a lot inbetween sessions feeling more positive realise that certain things will affect me and that will just take some figuring out - at the medical practice I work in today got a lovely welcome back which also helps I am so grateful for my new hip :)

I went back to work way too soon, and it was tricky to get things worked out and find the lines of too much ...too much sitting, too much walking, too much bending ...
Take care of yourself...

Hi TonyBee,

Also in NZ and it does seem the 6 weeks is what we are told to have off work as I’m in the same boat as well. Have a med very for 6 weeks, and also lack annual leave/ sick leave. (I’m a nurse)That was a very long wait for a hip on the public list, am glad you are more or less pain free now. Am not looking forward to the sitting at work either and will have to look at a solid chair as ours are all on wheels.

Take care
