TKR Has anyone had a nerve ablation post tkr?

So sorry for the setback, it's not uncommon. I finally had to go back to tylenol during the day and oxy at night. Last night, I slept better.

PT. For me, it's just very gentle ROM and electrical stim on other body parts (I had TLHR March 2).
Good luck!

Thanks for the support. I took pain meds and pretty much rested the knee for two weeks and let the pulled quad heal. Over the last 10 days I have gradually managed to get back to where I was before the physio setback. Yesterday I walked along the river for 15 blissful minutes, had a quick lunch out in a brew pub on a very comfy tall stool and met my daughter and grandson at a park. I had zero pain and it was wonderful to feel a little normal again. No limping, no stick, full extension and 120 flexion.

Of course it couldn’t last. This morning I was scheduled for a pancreatic mri. I have the Ashkenazi gene, which predisposes me to breast cancer (done that) and pancreatic cancer. Because of Covid I waited almost a year to get an appointment so had to accept the date given. I had no idea it would be a two hour thing requiring iv insertion with contrast and 45 minutes spent in the tight metal tube. They tried to make me comfortable but despite their best efforts- placing a cushion under my knee- you can probably imagine how I felt afterwards. I could barely walk using a cane. So, its back to square one. incredibly frustrating. I am seeing my surgeon for a six week check tomorrow. Hopefully it won’t take too long for my fat, screaming knee to get back on track. Once again I am out of pain meds: I really hope he is sympathetic: again.

Moral of the story? Never agree to have an mri six weeks post tkr.

Oh I’m so sorry you are in such pain again. :console2:Hopefully the knee will settle down for you soon.

Best wishes as you seek answers for the other condition.

Thanks Jockette. I am sure the test will be fine: it was just precautionary and probably could have waited…. I am the queen of self sabotage.

So sorry to read that your knee is giving you ongoing grief, but it is somewhat comforting to know that I'm not the only one not having a smooth journey with my 2nd knee, funny how different the two knees are despite same surgeon/hospital. I've since stopped looking at my 2019 notes, it only discourages me as this knee is taking far longer.
We'll both get there slowly in the end, thank goodness we only have 2 knees:unsure:
Sending you healing hugs xx

So very sorry Vida for the setback! My quads and hamstrings were some of the worst sources of pain for me in the first 2-3 months. Will be praying for good results from your MRI. Too bad you had to endure an MRI so early in recovery! My current knee recovery has been worse and longer than my PKR in 2016 and at that time, I thought that I was having a terrible recovery (wasn’t on Bonesmart yet).
Rest that knee/leg and you’ll be back feeling “normal” very soon!

So sorry you are back in pain after having to endure the MRI at just 6 weeks. I’m sure you are doing all you can to baby that knee for a few days but hopefully you’ll get back to where you were very soon. Your progress was going very well and this “hiccup” is only a small one. We can all have setbacks at any part in this process 6 months and I still get the odd day of aching and swelling for no real obvious overdoing. Feel better soon.

Thanks SKs and Patriciad. You are very reassuring. Surprisingly my surgeon cut me loose today. He checked my knee and declared it sound. Said there would likely be more tough moments but that I could always call with any questions or concerns. I left with a decent prescription for tramacet ‘for greater pain’ and one for meloxicam. All very casual. He did my complex hip replacement in 2013 so I guess he has a bit of confidence in me. I treated myself to a brief hot tub, first time since surgery, and did some gentle moving while submerged. It felt really good. I am also cleared to do ‘gentle’ Pilates at 12 weeks. Now it’s up to me to take it slow and steady. For now it’s back to ice and elevation.

Wonderful results from seeing your OS. Pleased he gave you some prescription meds to have on hand. I found that Tramadol plus Tylenol together worked very well the first weeks to month then I was able to cut down to just extra strength Tylenol. I was lucky this 2nd time around not to have as much pain with my PKR but maybe that’s because I fully adopted the bonesmart approach this time around. I didn’t find this forum right away with my first TKR. so was following the more traditional aggressive PT regime and had a lot of pain and swelling. You are doing really well @Vida. Keep it up!

What a rollercoaster. Earlier this week I felt good enough to try driving so visited my 97 year old mother for the first time in three months because, well, Covid and my knee. Only a 10 minute drive. I sat on her sofa for half an hour..which I don‘t ever do at home…. but I could hardly steal her recliner! I also stopped on the way home to pick up sushi. That didn’t seem like a lot at the time but yesterday morning I could barely walk. Today is worse. Not only is walking a problem, I cannot get a bend past 90 without excruciating pain. Moving the leg at all is very painful. I have stretched the muscle/ligaments behind the knee and am pretty sure I have an IT band issue given where the biggest pain seems to be on the outer side of the knee. is seven weeks out too soon to try a band above the knee? When I grasp my leg above the knee with two hands the pain is much relieved.

I have experienced a couple of setbacks before this that I could immediately pinpoint to physio and another medical procedure. Is it normal with an ‘overuse’ backslide to be in such bad shape? I feel as though I am 2 weeks out, not seven.

Indeed this can be a real rollercoaster of a ride on the way to full recovery and are so early on in the healing process. You did a lot- driving, sitting, in and out of our car getting sushi. It is fantastic that you felt able to do all that activity but your knee is saying welcome to the over did it club. Go back to basics for a few days and I’m sure the swelling and discomfort will ease. Personally I wouldn’t do any band above the knee at 7 weeks but perhaps one of our more experienced moderators can guide you. @Layla @Pumpkin
Good luck feel better soon.

Is it normal with an ‘overuse’ backslide to be in such bad shape?

Definitely. When I traveled to visit family for thanksgiving, it took me about 2-1/2 weeks to recover. All the walking, standing, sitting crunched in a plane seat for two hours really took a toll on both knees.

At 7 weeks you are still very very early in this year long+ recovery. You did way too much for your knee right now, and it let you know loud and clear.
Best thing to do is to rest, ice, and elevate, gentle activities are OK. Seems everyone has these set backs. We think we are further along than we actually are.
Where are you in recovery?? (TKR)

When visiting your mom is it possible for you to put your leg up on the sofa, taking your shoes off, or use a hand towel to protect the sofa?

The problem we bonesmarters have is knowing what is too much and generally we think at 7 weeks we should be almost back to normal and then do too much trying to do as much as we did before the op. Give us one small success and what do we do - we push it!! :heehee: I am now at the 3 month marker and the difference between week 7 and now is phenominal. No I am not back to normal but I am almost there and everyday I make more progress without even trying. I learned my lesson about tryng too hard when I ended up in hospital last week on complete bed rest for 3 days (nothing directly to do with leg - suffered a Pulmonary Embolism) and my leg improved!!! I still have to rest more than I like due to recovery from PE but I think it is also doing my leg good. Isn't it ridiculous what it takes sometimes to slow us down. Oh well I had better get my backside out of bed and get on that excercise bike - 6 minutes no tension - next week going to try some tension but I am not going to push more than necessary. I am quite getting used to this new laid back person that I have had to become. I think you are doing amazing for 7 weeks but maybe its time to cut yourself some slack, take it easy and allow yourself time to get better. As my surgeon said it is more that just the scar you see and the joint you know has been replaced and you need to give your body time to heal.

I am curious about swelling. I am 8 weeks tomorrow and my knee is as swollen as it was after leaving hospital. I read so many posts in which people describe dramatic reductions in their swelling. Am I abnormal? I run an ice machine over my knee four times a day and use a gel pack at night.

Vida what has your surgeon said about your swelling? Frankly 8 weeks in and I'm not surprised by your swelling. But we are all different. I for one am one whom swells - and I know it gets very frustrating. But, you are very early on in recovery. Are you icing and elevating? You need to be. Your dealing with a brand new baby knee.

Time is on your side - recovery takes time.

@eaglemom I was fully dismissed at 6 weeks, he didn’t comment. Except to be patient.

I had swelling for the first 10-12 weeks, especially as I became more active. Keep icing and elevating!

I was doing amazing at week 2 then week 3 I had a set back. Its was then week 11 before swelling in my knee went and I suspect that doing too much might bring it back but I have learned my lesson and don't do too much in fact I do very little due largely to having just been in hospital after having had a PE but I have found that doing less has improved my knee in every way. I am not totally recovered but I make small improvements each day. I am at week 13 and I am trying to come downstairs one foot after the other with only a modecum of success but I will get there and I am not pushing as I know what will happen. I stopped icing while in hospital (2 weeks ago) and have not started again as my knee whilst still hot at times it is not swollen and not too hot. As I sit lazily waiting for breakfast in bed I just realised that I can now do heel slides without pain - first time since op!!! The advice to be patient is the best advice. Hope you feel better soon.
