I would not use a heating pad to warm the knees up---that will crete more stiffness in the joint. You can use the heating pad to warm up the muscles when you stretch, but, in my mind, applying heat to a joint will cause more fluid to go to the joint.
 
I agree with referee. I sometimes found heat on the muscles ok, but I ice the joint.
