TKR Grandma B's Recovery Thread

Your tastes will go back to pre-surgery, but it will take a while. After my infection surgery the only thing I craved was chocolate covered pretzels! My OS wanted me on a high protein diet, so I had to find protein I could eat. I enjoy salads, but it was a few months before I could eat a salad. My family helped by providing meals and cleaning afterward. That first crockpot meal I made came around 3.5 weeks post op, then I went back in the hospital and didn’t cook again for another month.

Is icing behind the knee helping?

@KarriB yes the icing behind the knee feels good I did it last night and I’m doing today . Chocolate covered pretzels are my favorite ! It’s amazing how everything changes after surgery. thank you for also suggesting the crock pot! I will throw a chicken and veggies and spices in there and also my husband can help making other things in the pot , so much better without all the pots and pans to clean up!

You’re welcome! I didn’t think ahead to prepare and freeze a few meals, but I’ll do that with my left knee. Although since I’m single just a few frozen WW meals would do. If there’s a family to feed it’s best to prep and freeze ahead of time. But you just never know what you’re going to be craving.

Hi guys just touching bases, I had my fist evaluation yesterday it was a grueling hour and half. I did marches, sit to stand, step ups, side to side, while he timed me I had to walk to a mark on the floor and back did that only once everything else was two minutes each and also he pushed on my leg to see how straight he could get it, also I had a band on my foot and had to pull my leg till I felt the stretch that was abou 20 x, he started to push gently on the knee cap cause he said he has to loosen it up did anyone else have that done?

My steri strips were not really falling off but were just curling up and hanging there the pt removed them and now if anything touches the site it’s very sensitive even a blanket makes it feel like there tiny pins pinching it , it’s a little irritated I’m wondering has anyone else experienced it I know my strips hanged on for a while I’d say 3 weeks.

Gosh I'm hurting just reading all that! How does your knee feel today?

I honestly don’t want to do anything today, my pain level is very mild I didn’t take anything yet .yesterday I took oxycodone twice I was fine,my knee is swollen so I’m icying it and also where the steri strips were it’s very sensitive , I think yesterday pushing on my knee has something to do with the sensitivity it’s s little red too. Im so miserable and depressed will it ever get better ? walking is hard I can visualize what I want to do and when I try I’m having a hard time accomplishing it! I know I have to be patient but when you here story’s of others walking and doing so much and here I feel like I’m not getting anywhere, I know it’s still early and to be patient but it’s hard! I try to do the cooking the dishes and a little dusting but I get so exhausted and discussted !

Next week I see my surgeon for my first visit with him scared to see what he’ll say.

Way too much at PT!!!!!:yikes:

And if you must cook, do NOT do the dishes and ignore the dust. :no-fin:

Oh dear. That was way too much PT. I know it’s easy to think you have to do it all —that’s what the PT will tell you— but you really don’t. If you find an exercise useful or think it will help you, then do it, but don’t let the PT push down on your knee, or force it to bend in any way. That kind of manipulation is the most likely to result in painful setbacks.

I’m glad your pain is mild and not terrible. You’re doing the smart thing by icing a lot and resting. Your exhaustion at this stage is NORMAL. I was tired and catching lots of naps for three months.

Please don’t compare your knee to other knees. There are so many reasons for knees (and their owners) to recover differently. Consider that some of those people may be further along in their recovery. Even a week can make a difference, and a month is huge at this point. You’re recovering very well!

I agree Jockette I’m drained today it’s way too much PT! They make you feel like you’re not doing enough but the next day you’re done! Patience! Patience!! I’m so done with this I’m trying to stay positive but it’s hard!

SusieShoes thank you for replying I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one that gets so exhausted and the thought of food sometimes it’s tolerable and other times I’m nauseated at the thought of it. With the PT my husband is all for the exercise he doesn’t understand how swollen you get after, he wants me to go more than twice a week and I told him NO! He doesn’t believe that it could set you back, I know he wants me back to normal but so do I even more than he knows I hate laying around ! I do my cooking and dishes and walking here and there but it all feels strange and I have this fear in me that something is going to happen ( I’m going to fall).im scared to stand on my leg thinking it’s going to dislocate or something, sometimes I get this feeling like it’s loose , I always had dislocated knees and that’s were the fear comes from. Sorry for going on and on but I know that you guys understand you were there and when through it! I’m so glad to have someone that understands:thankyou:

I forgot to mention the Pt told me that 40 to 90 minutes of icing is way too much that you could get frost bite, he said 15 to 20 min is good. I still do it the bone smart way haha!! He doesn’t have to know.

You need to find a different PT. He/she isn't doing you any good and only setting your recovery back. It's nonsense about the frostbite as long as you have a cloth between the ice pack and your knee.

As long as something is between the ice and your knee you’ll be fine, but I can’t say the same for the treatment you’re getting from the therapist.

I was on my own so doing dishes amounted to throwing away a paper plate or rinsing a dish & putting it the dishwasher. :heehee:

When you say the knee feels loose, is it like the knee gives way a little here and there? I had that in the early weeks and it was explained to me that it was to do with the muscle healing. It just stopped happening without me really noticing when.

@kneeper yes the knee sometimes gives way, like it’s slipping out it scares me , it just happens suddenly and I feel like it’s going to dislocate, it scares me to walk.

As the knee heals and the swelling goes down, and the muscles grow stronger and hold the knee better, you might feel it as a “difference” in the way the knee feels. Each of my knees went through a spell of feeling a little more mobile than before, but then that feeling went away.

Keep your walker or cane with you until you feel more confidence in your knee. You can still take nice walks with those devices.

Thank you SusieShoes I just hope it doesn’t happen, I’m scared it’ll pop out! So I’m walking very careful . I’m trying to get off of oxycodin-acetaminophen10-325 as I’m not feeling a lot of pain only sometimes very mild, I tried stoping yesterday and today and I notice at night I get the shakes like chills and can’t sleep keep waking up ! It’s a weird feeling, right now I have a headache I wonder if it’s from me stoping the oxy at once that it’s like withdrawl symptoms?? Has anyone gone through it ? Or I shouldn’t of done it this way? Please help!

I had horrible withdrawal symptoms - and they are REAL - and so I looked up how to ease off the OXY and followed that. I still had the withdrawal but not as bad... You should definitely not just stop. Do you have a step down med you can take such as Tramadol?

@funkymuse I don’t have another step down med to take. I was having such a headache and took one my headache is better but these withdrawles symptoms are creepy!!! I’m going to look up how to ease off. Are u off of them? Is sleeping better? I was shaking like a leaf for a couple of nights I can’t believe it’s this bad to stop! This whole TKR is a nightmare!

Stopping cold turkey is a bad idea. I tried to wean off quickly because I was experiencing terrible nausea. Quickly isn't very good, either. Unpleasant, to say the least. Wean off slowly if you can.
