TKR Graduated!

I agree with Slainte. My OS told me I didn't need any more PT when I still had several weeks left on the prescription. I had some goals PT was helping me achieve, so I continued working with them until the prescription ran out.

Pt is really a personal thing---in many countries of the world---like the UK--most folks do not have formal PT and their knees turrn out just fine. But in this country we are obsessed with "getting it right" and making sure we are the best at recovering, so most of us go to PT.

If you were an 80 year old lady who just wanted to play with her grandchildren without pain---PT would seems a little silly. I, on the other hand, am a ski instructor and wanted to make sure I could ski again. I did PT for 3 months---and loved it.

I think your PT's remark that your hamstring is scared is a little childish as an explanation--my PT used a skeleton to show me the exact site of the muscles and tendons as he referred to them. After surgery, our muscles are weaker---is it not unusual since they have been exposed to the air and moved around by the surgeon. My own quad took some time to "wake up" and get back to work. I could not train the muscle until it was firing.

If your muscle is not firing (contracting) when you want it to do so, you can use E-Stym which used a mild electrical current to force the muscle to contract--and thus wakes it up. or you can gently stretch a muscle which is not firing and has possibly contracted a little.

Of course all of this is affected by swelling. Think of a garden hose filled with water---you cannot bend it right? If your knee is filled with liquid, it is not going to bend either. As the swelling is assimilated back into your body, it will be easier to move your joint.

I had adhesions in my left knee and eventually had to have them removed. My OS was adamant that I was not to do any pt for 3 weeks. and then, I started very slowly rehabbing the knee. I did not strengthen the knee until 8 weeks. The OS felt very strongly that adhesions are formed when we do overly vigorous exercise on a hot, swollen knee. My PT was fanatical about making sure all of the swelling was gone before I began to strengthen the knee while weight bearing. the end result? my rom is145/0.

I will add that it took me almost two months to get to zero on the extension---I would gently let the leg hang over the end of the bed every night for about 5 minutes or so.

Good weekend, walked over a mile Saturday, and steep staircase to the AV loft over the Church 3 times. Doing the stretch exercies at my speed had removed tension, and things are progressing well. I will discuss stopping PT sessions with the Dr, next week. Y'all are right, I seem to do better on my own.

Sounds like you are doing great! Well done on knowing what works for you.

I agree---walking outside on flat ground is the best PT in the world. Watching the seasons change the flowers and trees is great exercise for mind and body. I have two dogs who require two walks per day, so I am forced to walk and really, they have given me a gift.

stairs really help my quads strengthen, and they do not cause any discomfort.

I am starting to feel like I am being released from jail, or something. For months before the surgery every foot trip I took was carefully measured and planned, because of pain. Now, suddenly, I can wander around for no reason! Hard to explain, but I am feeling freed from confinement.

4 weeks post-op, it seem my muscles are finally relaxing. I can feel the knee clunk slightly when I tense my quads.
The feeling of freedom to move with little to no pain is exhilarating!

PT today was good. I have 120 degrees of flexion, the goal, and he got me to 0 degrees extension for a short time without pain. Lying on my stomach, knee on a pad, and leg hanging over the end, he used a tool to massage my hamstring and relax it. It went back to 6 degrees after I got up, last time was 10-12, but that eliminated any mechanical issues. He has apologized every visit for the first visit when he forced it straight causing me major pain. he's sticking with pain-free. :)

How do I change the title on this thread? Anyway, today is one month post op, and I think I am going to like this knee. We had a rough introduction, but things are smoothing out!

Say what you want the title to become, and a mod will change it for you.

PT session today was OK, but my extension seems stuck at 8 degrees. :( Flexion is up to 126 degrees, with no PT on it at all, just doing it on it's own. One day!

Glad you have made friends with your new knee. I like mine, too!

Doctor (OC?) thinks I can finish PT on my own. He say the extension issue (6-8 degrees) is both the hamstring and extra fluid in the knee capsule. Anyone else have knee capsule issues? Overall, he says I'm impatient, and at one month I am way ahead of most folks. :snork:

I also found out what knee I got. A J&J DePuy sigma, with an all polyethylene lower platform, no metal. Surgeon predicts 25 year life.

I walked .8 miles today shopping with my wife for the first time in well over a year. Leg tired, but not in pain.

@jmdearras Woohoo! Good for you walking so far! I'm can't walk that far yet but I'm getting there! I still have one bum knee to get fixed then the walking will be more comfortable. Seems to get a little easier every day.
