TKR Getting somewhere at last!

Ok folks, just been to physio (a very nice, very young man!) He agreed that physio can be overdone and if it hurts next day I've overdone it. He said , as everyone on here has, discomfort is normal, do NOT push through pain. Gave me some extra exercises - single leg balancing, sideways walking along kitchen work top, standing to sitting with even weight and no holding on. He says I'm doing fine and stressed it's still early days. He did push the bend after asking my permission, (not enough to hurt) and measured it at 122. I have learned that numbers are irrelevant, but can't help being a bit pleased. Straightening is still difficult but been doing the 'legs hanging off the bed' as suggested on here and it's helping. First time though I thought I was stuck as hadn't considered how to get back up! Thank you all for your reassurance and help

LOL Oops! Yeah ok, not very well described , but you know what I mean! :th_heehee

Sounds like you are coming along very well! And every day gets better!

You sound like you are doing really well and well done on your physio. When did you have your surgery?? I imagine as it's your first visit to physio it must be late January. You can put the date in your signature setting :thumb:

well done on the physio sweetie - was my first time today too - i had a very nice very young lady and she was pleased with me though did try to get me to bend it a bit more but it did hurt and i told her and she stopped - go back on wednesday and she is gonna get me into the gym so not sure what that involves - nervous but also looking forward to it - keep up the good work xxx

Good luck with the gym. Here in Scotland it is not usual to be given any physio after leaving hospital. Just get handed a list of exercises to do at home until back for a check up in approx 6 weeks. I'm afraid I pushed the GP to get referred. I felt that I needed someone to reassure me I was on the right road.

Wow! I was in rehab for 2 weeks, lucky to be out of bed hardly thinking about walking around the block. for me recovery is two steps forward, one step back. It is bit by bit. I am using one cane having been on two canes for awhile, and a walker before that. Take it easy and love yourself... You'll get there! Lots of luck!

Sore ,stiff and swollen this morning.....might have been the extra physio exercises although felt ok at the time. Very gently with exercises today! My sister had volunteered to drive me the 3 hour round trip to visit our parents. I hadn't seen them since before the op. it was nice to see them but the car journey caused stiffness again. So now it's ice , elevate and rest! Same again tomorrow I think! Hopefully just a blip in recovery and it's onwards and upwards from tomorrow!

That is the way it is with the vast majority of us! It felt OK at the time--and then, later on, our knee told us in no uncertain terms that it was not happy with us!

You are smart to ice/elevate/rest---let the knee calm down; it is rather angry with you; you need to let it let go of the anger.

I found car rides of any length past 10 minutes brutal for the first 2 months or so. There was a reason my doc gave me instructions to get out and walk every hour. By three months out several hour trips were fine. I promise it will get better.
Keep resting, icing and elevating and pain meds routinely.

Referee, I agree with you 110% and Speccybecky, I feel the same as you, very impatient with it all but it is true, your legs will get tired and very angry and they will let you know that! I'm 7 weeks and mine still scream at me :) - but it does get better!

This afternoon/evening my whole leg aches from bum to ankle. Calf, shin, front and back of thigh, inside and back of knee. I think, I hope , it's just protesting muscles? ice isn't helping, actually I' m beginning to think it's heat I need? Elevating not doing much either. On the other hand my niece s friend, who is 7 months pregnant , has just been diagnosed with a malignant melanoma in her neck . Kinda put my knee on the back burner ....

Becky, remind me again what pain medications you are taking.

Also....this type of pain can be the result of too much activity. Remember, you should be resting, icing and elevating most of the day and night. You are less than a month out from a very major surgical procedure, you know.

2 paracetamol 4 times a day. Tramadol when needed up to eight a day....usually only take them late afternoon and at bedtime. I do take them when I need them. Physio gave me extra exercises on Friday and they certainly don t cause me any pain at the time. He did, however, try to get me to step up a step on bad leg and I tried but was too painful so didn't t do it again!

Are you doing any activity around the house? Errands? Cooking? Laundry? Cleaning?

Since you are so early out and are experiencing pain, I think you should stay on your Tramadol whether you need it right then or not. Unfortunately by the time you feel the pain, you are playing catch up with your medication if you're taking it sporatically and it's really not doing you much good.

Thanks, yes, I potter about the house cooking etc. sometimes with no sticks, sometimes I need them. I have taken more meds today as I felt I needed them

I was thinking you might say that. Less pottering.....more rest, ice, elevating. You are likely on your feet way to much for this early stage of recovery.
