THR FCBayern's Recovery

Happy Five Month Anniversary!
I love your car and what a fun way to celebrate by taking a long car ride to a favorite winery on a warm sunny day. Sounds like the perfect thing to do on a weekend. I hope you have a lovely week as well.
@FCBayern

A little over 6 months for me now and things continue to go well. Mostly for me it's now just a matter of regaining strength and conditioning after almost 2 years of very limited mobility between knee and hip. Trying to walk as much as possible but it's getting more difficult as the weather gets hotter, I'm not a morning person so getting out early isn't very likely.

:alarm:need a wakeup calll?:) :-) (:
I've been working in this heat, and mornings are definitely the best.
Course I, for some reason have my internal clock set for 4 am so can barely stay awake until 9 pm.
We often hit lulls in our recovery, least I did...
Keep the faith, it just gets better, friend.

I found my stationary recumbent bike was a great way to build up some motion and strength when I could not go outside easily after my surgeries - tended to end up with winter surgeries.

Well at 8 months I've just given my hip the test of a lifetime and it came through with flying colors. I retired the first of July and our ultimate plans include moving out of the country to live in retirement. Before leaving the US our plan was to establish residency in a non-state income tax state so we don't pay for services not received out of our pensions. I won't go into all the gory details but as it worked out I had to sort the entire house and pack heirlooms for overseas shipment and everything else we need to live for the 6-7 months by myself in 5 days. 12-14 hour days for 5 days and not a peep from my hip (unlike every other muscle and joint in my body:heehee:). 5 days later after an estate sale 5 more long days touching up paint etc. to prepare the house for sale. Again long days with no complaints from my hip. I was even too busy and then tired to ice like I would have normally. A month and 10 days after retirement we woke up in our new home in Nevada. I would never have believed I could accomplish so much 17 months after TKR and 8 months after THR pain free. It's only now looking back that I see how small my life had become and how bright my future is now.:martini:

Hello @FCBayern It is always nice to hear from you!
Congrats on your retirement and move. I hope you enjoy your Nevada home.
Be safe and stay well! :)

How wonderful to be active or is this overactive and not hurt in the hip. Enjoy retirement. I sure do.

Great update, happy retirement and congrats on the new home! :yes!:

A question for those further down the road than I, how long before you could take long car rides without discomfort? I'll be at 9 months next week and I hardly notice the hip for the most part other than still building weak muscles. After 2-3 hours in the car however and what starts as discomfort quickly becomes very painful. Stopping frequently and stretching helps, but once the pain sets in as soon as I sit in the car again it starts instantly. I realize I'm still only at about the halfway mark in recovery but was curious to hear others experience.

It really depends on what car...I have a Toyota with bucket seats and even at 9 months...it was uncomfortable after an hour.
Firm truck seat of my husband's where legs were not so far up...not as bad.
It did Finally get better but bucket seats and my SI joint aren't friends.

Hello @FCBayern
I dealt with extreme discomfort in the car during the early months also. I had a hard time sitting beyond 30-40 minutes. I don’t recall my irritation lasting as long as yours, but we’re all different. It was the confinement of prolonged sitting in the same position without much room to move. I can relate.

I began using a frozen gel pack for a time in the area of my incision. Not sure why, or if it was just a distraction, but it worked. However, I wasn’t on the road for hours either. Since yours starts after 2-3 hrs, is relieved by stretching / walking, but then starts again once in position, I’d stop more frequently every hour, or 90 mins, if it will save you from the misery you’ve described. I’m sure as time marches on it will slowly ease.
Have a nice weekend! :SUNsmile:

Just realized it has been 10 months since my THR. I couldn't be happier with where I am. Long car rides are getting much better and I continue to slowly build strength in the hip. Living in a house with stairs for the first time in 40 years is certainly helping with that! :rotfl: Planning a trip to canyon country (Zion, Arches etc.) in the sports car at the end of the month and plan to do some hiking. I'll take my trekking poles and start sensibly so I can enjoy the whole trip. Just recently found out my younger brother needs a left THR, he's still waiting for a surgery date but I've encouraged him to join the site.

:wave:The trip sounds like fun...places to go... Things to see.
Sorry your brother is trying to be a copycat, but I do hope he joins us.
Thanks for your sound advice and contributions to our new members.
It's what makes Bonesmart special, in my opinion.:tada:

I’m going to wish you safe travels now in case I forget later, with hopes you fully enjoy the trip you’ll embark on in a few weeks. Thanks for pointing your brother in the direction of BoneSmart and thanks for all of the support and encouragement you offer others moving through recovery. You‘re appreciated!
Have a great week. :)
@FCBayern

Happy for your continued recovery and sounds like you have an awesome trip planned. Enjoy!

So at approximately 11 months post THR, 22 months post TKR, and 9 years post TAR, yesterday I hiked 4 miles and 1028 feet into Bryce canyon (1st Picture) and then back up again (2nd picture). It actually snowed on us the last 1/3 of the trip up. It's been years since I could even think of taking such a challenging hike! I'm truly blessed to live in a time that modern medicine could give me a mobile life again!
