Hi @Suzette - been a very busy week, and have more company staying with us this weekend.
However, a good hip week, thx for asking!

I continue to remap my right foot/brain interface, getting better at automatically knowing where my right foot is and at what angle. Doing front/back side to sides quickly on land and in pool every other day...getting faster and stronger (and more co-ordinated).

The bit of thickness and numbness at upper thigh around the scar is still there, tho reducing weekly.
No more swelling anywhere. I have no patience nor tolerance for things that don't work right on me...but am saying "ommmmmm" a lot to allow time my body needs to deal with it.
:)

PT on Thursday, which was week 5, we again did all of the 'by the book' stuff for week 12 and week 24, then I did an add'l 15 minutes of tougher stuff again, including now jumping side to side on bosu balls while sticking the one-footed landing and balancing for ~5 seconds each time.

I'm ready to ride my bike now (that was a self-imposed limitation...no riding until I could stick and balance no one leg comfortably, in case I have an emergency bike fall or whatever), and my PT guy says, "go ride your bike already, sheesh") so we'll ride like normal on Sunday.

More hoops Sat morning, and that of course is getting easier...more 3 pointers with better explosion of power thru the hips this week I expect.

No drugs at all since last weekend, not even to sleep, which is nice.

I'm getting tired of the numbness feeling, but PT guy says it could be there a while as the nerves re-knit. I expect you have similar?

How's your right leg doing...getting improvement now in what, almost week 7 for you?

Hi great you are doing so well on your PT, and your right foot coordination is improving.

My right hip is still a bit troublesome, and both still have that numbness, which tingles and itches too, so that must be the nerves repairing themselves. All progress. I can walk about with no limp but still have to take pain meds to keep the constant throb type feeling at bay. I am further apart with timings, but the meds I take are also for my dodgy back!! The back will be re-assessed once the hips have settled down. As it was uncertain whether the pain in the left leg, was hip or back .....

oh the joys of hitting 40....:snork:

Hmmm, @Suzette - you know what? Pain is a pain in the butt!
Really hope you figure yours out soon and that it resolves favorably! It gets old, doesn't it?

I went biking for the 1st time today, in week 5. Could have done it 2 wks ago, but I self-limitied it until I felt safe to jump off sideways and land strongly on one leg, just in case. As it turns out, it was uneventful and felt just fine...went about 3-4 miles, shot some baskets for a half hour and rode home.

I did have one incident which tells me what I want to work on going forward:

I started the bike one time by standing on the left pedal and swinging my right leg up and over/around the rear tire/seat to place it on the right pedal and start biking.
*Big mistake*
...my left hip (which is 'fine' and strong and usually feels almost normal) was torqued pretty hard as the right leg swung around (I was more worried about the right leg being lifted so high, so was concentrating on controlling that...and did fine with it)...
turns out that we pressure our standing hip a LOT when mounting a bike that way...who knew?!?

So - my left outside hip is a little sore tonight, and it started out a little stiff since yesterday's ~1 mile walk and jogging on the basketball court a few times.

Still no drugs since last weekend, and I'll see how the sleep goes tonight. Ought to be recovered in the morning, but as usual...we'll see!

PT this week will no longer work on strength...I've got tons of that to spare. I need more flexibility and rotational stability and agility. I think that's the only way I'm going to get 'normal', so that's what I'll ask for!

Well I like to think positive, so 40 ish is good ...prefer 38 but my eldest is catching me up ..

I haven't done that leg over the bike for years but can imagine the stress on the hip, now I think about it. It's great you have cut out pain meds. I tried to cut mine down today and my wordy, did I know about it. I was not totally aware how bad the right hip and butt pain was, so have been in quite a downer today and am still trying to control it.

I need to get into my GP tomorrow, even if I have to sit there in surgery and wait. It certainly knocked me back a bit knowing I do need to sort things out . Not helped by my mom telling me I have 'fat ' inner thighs, then my son telling me it's just muscles....see how well trained he is, convinced me I have muscles and that they weigh heavier than fat, so the 4 pounds I gave put on is muscle :yes!:

I hope your left hip has settled again. I too need to concentrate on flexibility etc too. So once I sort out this bursitis thing I can get going in the pool.

hope you got sleep too, I still have trouble getting off to sleep, then cant wake up in the morning. X

Hi @Suzette - my last post was during my week 5.
Today is week 8 start for me!
No drugs of any kind since week 4.

Has your pain resolved yet (I think you're in week 10?)? Any headway on the bursitis issue?

My status now:

I've had several PT sessions working on that hip rotational strength and flexibility issue. It's worked great.

Yesterday, I had some soreness in that same upper left side lifter area that I stretched with the over-the-seat bike move 3 weeks ago.
My PT guy said, "Rest for a few days, you're overdoing it, even for you. If it was anyone else, they'd be dead already! [with a chuckle]. So, you'll probably go home tonight and bike to shoot 200 shots, right?"
I didn't - I 'rested'. Only biked to the pool and swam/jogged 20 easy laps.
:)

Been biking - getting on and off is now easy and solid, even hopping off to a rolling stop. Any biking distance is comfy.

Still have that "pork sausage' slight numbness in the thigh area just below the incisions, both sides....but maybe better than weeks ago. Nerve repair is slooooowwww.

Hoops - shooting whatever shots I want now, from any distance, no problem. Shot over 300 shots Sat in 95 degree Florida sun (gorgeous, sweaty day!) and jogged the length of the court ~ a dozen times...slowly.

Can do a slow controlled jog, and only for short distances.

Pool - can swim and run for many laps. Doing low dive and high dive, as well as long fun slide for a few hours this Sunday. A little tiring on upper thigh lifter tendons (was with 3 grandkids, so 'had' to play a bunch) but no ill effect.

Cutting my own lawn and doing all of the bending to weed, edge, trim bushes, etc. Kicked the yard guy to the curb 2 weeks ago and said thank you for filling in while I was 'busy'.

So, basically, I look and feel 'normal' now, except that I can not run, nor jump yet (I don't think...at least in my mind I can't yet, so I can't...and won't until my mind says it's safe).

Really, hope you're coming along smartly!

@Dashinghippie If you feel the need to cry than by all means do it! Nothing to be ashamed of. Heck, I still cry at times (really over nothing) and my One hip was done 6 months ago. The pre-op pain and after surgery pain is so very life changing. I believe crying is healing and soothes the soul.

Big girls don't cry. At least that's what I heard!

Update today:

In keeping with my PT guy's 'mild suggestion' that I rest a couple of days and allow my healing to catch up with my physical activity...

I called the lawn guy this morning and my lawn is all nicely cut, edged, weedwhacked and blown as I type. didn't lift a finger.

So there.

Time to go out and trim bushes and trees.
lol
can't help myself.

btw, I was up on my 20' ladder 3 days ago, cleaning out some rain gutters that had gotten clogged while I was immobile. No sweat.

btw, sleep...

Since about 2-3 weeks ago, I moved to my bedroom with my wife (1st time in many months), and I've been sleeping normally, on both sides, unaided by pills or pillows of any kind. It's a really great feeling to just simply Go.To.Sleep when I want to, and stay that way until morning. Getting maybe 6-8 hrs/night, unbroken.

I think the last time I could do that before Nov 2014.
What a relief!
:)

Its never been 3 weeks since you were on here!! You are still doing great.

I am just over 9 weeks now. Left leg still pretty much good, right leg pretty much the same, but as OS said everything was ok bone and implant wise, the right thigh pain i am having and really gets me down...is normal. Felt like I had wasted his time. So anyway, am just putting up with it now. Still take cocodamol which doesnt do anything really and still cant sleep until about 3 to 4 am and it still really hurts if I sleep on my right side. ..like last night, well like this morning rather ...

Seeing chiropractor friday so hoping some deep tissue massage helps loosen the right thigh muscles a bit. The bursitis throb is still there. ..but other than these little niggles all is well. Although I dont do a any of the stuff you do, I just walk. OS said no to physio.

Still a bit numb, but a lot of under the skin itching going on, so assume the nerves are repairing well.

Am back at work but only a few hours thus week then increasing next week etc.

Really tired even after a few hours.

Keep resting and no being naughty and hurting yourself!!

sheesh, I sure hope some deep massage gets your darned right thigh acting nicely! I think that if not for that, you'd probably be able to kick all drugs and sleep like a human being ought!
:)

and I think you have the same tingly front thigh/scar/numb sensations going on as I do. It's going to be slow for that stuff, I'm afraid...but it is essentially innocuous.

Sorry you even have to be concerned about holding up at work already...I'm *very* fortunate and I know it.
knock on wood.

I just spent ~2 hrs walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling all over the yard --> pulling weeds, edges, bushes, etc...done and a whole lot of sweaty mess here.....yechhttt.
hot shower, nice leftover dinner, and off to play men's social bridge all night!

during week 9:

impromptu ; flew to NY for 5 days to visit my Mom and bro...
feeling pretty good, still get little tweaks once in a while in my upper left side outer hip muscle....right leg (problematic for 1st few weeks) feels solid as a rock now. I ignore the left and do what I do.

Sat = rode bikes to and then up and down the beach boardwalk and back home ~25 miles.
Sun = rode bikes ~10 miles, to nature preserve and back
shot hoops for an hour, relaxed, ate too much
Mon = shot hoops, cut trees, crawled and weeded beds, cut & bundled bushes, played bridge, ate too much
Tues = shot hoops, played bridge, ate too much; car, train, & plane, back home to FL early Wed AM.

week 10 starts Thurs morning (tomorrow).
I begin my normal life, continuing my pre-op work-out schedule at the gym Thursday. No more PT of any sort, just what I work myself over time.

Hope all are doing well!

@Dashinghippie I wondered where you were. And I missed a pist as not getting alerts...booooo...

Anyway. Had a serious deep massage last Saturday truly made my eyes water and ached for days after. Will ask her not to do it with her elbow again!! I had cut down on meds until the elbow trick....had to increase them again. But things have settled again now. Except for my butt that just does not like being sat on at all....

I can not get your energy level, its great. Glad you had a good trip to New York too. ...never mind if you ate too much.

Keep on doing well xx

@Suzette
an elbow massage! Yikes! Gotta Love it! :)

what's up with the butt still hurting? is there some complication (or some prior hurt "butt spot" going on pre-op?)? You were anterior, so the butt ought to be pretty free and clear from all the hoopla, no?
:(

Just read through your thread, Dashinghippie. Great story. I have been healing quickly from my bilateral on Aug.18th, too. I also worked out at the gym up until the day before my surgery. I didn't have much pain, even though my hips were bone on bone. I DID have excruciating pain when I was resting from painful ballet a couple of years ago. The atrophy really did me in. I did what you described at the gym. I built up a layer of muscle around the bones and joints. It really alleviated the pain. My gait was really off, though.

Like you, I felt like my thighs had been beaten with a baseball bat right after the surgery. It was pretty hellish. The medications worked, though. I had my surgery two weeks ago on Tuesday, and I'm off the prescriptions now. I take an over the counter Motrin once every four hours. I've been walking about a mile and a quarter each day.

I'm fortunate as far as pain. I feel good, and I didn't have any nerve damage. I'm just doing the basic PT exercises they gave me in the hospital. At four weeks I can start swimming again. I'll go back to my gym routine then. For now I'm doing light housework and watering the yard. That feels like enough, with the walking, cooking, and cleaning.

Congrats on your recovery. How long do you think your replacement hips will last?

Awesome trajectory you're on, @Hip Hip Hooray! Keep it up! I really think working out thru the pain up front (pre-op) is a big key to recovery success.

I waited a full week *after* I was given the okay to submerge to actually do it. Since I know someone who got infected and had a near meltdown and 5 month ordeal because of it, I thought an abundance of caution in the swim department was worth an extra week of waiting.
I wanted no part of either falling nor infection. knock on wood so far! :)

My new hips ought to last me a good solid 10 years and probably more like 15 (the doc says >30 if I act like a 56 yr old man). I have no intention of idling quietly into the night as I age. When I **can't** move quickly and with speed anymore because of age, then I won't...but I don't yet accept that my speed and quickness must diminish just because I got fake hips...but I'll see within these next few months.

I'm doing pretty good lateral movements these days, but no way I'm ready to try any type of sprinting yet...probably 2-3 months away from that. That requires complete flexibility with simultaneous strength at any femur angle. At 10 weeks today, I'm not even close to that yet, imo.

I worked around my pain pre op. It still insulated my hip joints and thigh bones, though. I did a lot of extra work on the abs, upper body, and trunk. I had to modify the leg stuff, but still rebuilt a lot of muscle that had atrophied. I'm adding a little more each day, and it's rewarding.

Glad to hear your recovery has been so speedy!

@Hip Hip Hooray!
I still, at 10 weeks, get random small muscle pains and stiffness in upper and outer hip area...annoying, but tend to work or play right thru that.
No drugs at all since week 4...have a cabinet full of nearly full bottles of everything!

Also, I still, maybe a couple of times per week, get a random wave of "oh my, I'm tired as heck" during the day. Body must be in healing mode at those times...I try to rest then, but do not take naps, as that would destroy any chance of a normal sleep night that night.

Keep workin!
