TKR Coming along<<

I remember my doctor telling me not to take NSAIDs after my shoulder surgery. What did you take for pain after you broke your foot?

I took Tramadol for a week or so, then just Tylenol 1000mg every 6 hours. We aren't supposed to go over 4000mg a day, so I made sure I didn't do that! I was non-weight baring for 6 weeks which was the hardest thing I ever had to go through! I was thrilled when I could start putting a little of my weight on it. But, boy did it hurt! Elevation, ice and Tylenol helped a lot.

I was surprised that the new recommendations for Tylenol dosing are not to exceed 3,000 mg a day. So that translates to 1,000 mg ev 8 hours. That's the dose they were giving me after my TKR in the hospital, and when I questioned it, they made me aware of the new guidelines.

The new guidelines were issued as a result of people combining other OTC medication with Tylenol, and not counting the Tylenol in the medication toward the total daily dose.

Interesting! I can see how that can happen. The bottle of regular strength Tylenol warns not to take more than 10 pills a day, which is 3,250mg.

So, I went to the dentist today at 7 weeks po. just for an xray to get a film of a tooth that's been bothering me. She didnt see anything other than a small cavity in a different tooth but because the tooth in question has a crown, she said when your immune system is down, your teeth could act up, and is not uncommon to find infection under crowns . Also have some drainage on same side. So I'm taking a decongestant and Amoxicillin.

I'm glad your tooth is OK! I had a friend that had what she thought was a toothache and it turned out to be inflamed sinuses!

Thanks for responding..As you can tell, I've been very anxious about this recovery. Out of the blue, my knee buckled today and I freaked out, thought I was going to fall again. Don't ever remember being this anxious, hope it passes.

I was using a cane when it buckled earlier today. I thought I'd be stronger at 7 weeks po. Well, I did spend the last few months before surgery walking stiff legged due to the pain. Tell me it gets better!

It definitely gets much better! I used a cane for over 20 years before my tkr. Now, I'm not!

Would someone who has had a revision please tell me of their experience. I am asking because I am 62 yo and I'm doing the math. If I am lucky enough to live a long life, will likely need a revision at some point. Of course I realize there may be improvements with this sugery in the near future, (at least my OS believes this to be so).

A TKR can last for 30+ years, so it's quite possible that your current one will outlast you. Don't worry about needing a revision.

I had a revision of a failed partial (PKR) to a TKR. My recovery was very similar to my original recovery - certainly no worse.

That's good to know. My OS told me they last about 20 years, so it's been in my head that I will need a new one. Maybe not!!! I dont even know what kind I have, its 2 names. ___&___. Thank you

Try not to worry about something that may or may not happen that many years away. :console2:

Thank you Jockette, you are so right! I tend to be a worry wart at times. Today, I made an announcement to all the negative thoughts in my head, "Thanks for sharing but I am just not interested in what you have to say" Think I'll focus more on the present. I'm actually doing ok!

It’s hard not to worry, especially if it’s our first replacement. We’ve never done this before, our medical team surely does not prepare us adequately, and people tell us all kinds of things, some of which are not true.

Hang in there. :console2:

True. I am learning that everyone's recovery is different and time and patience is sometimes needed. I am 7 weeks po and have stiffness in the morning. The swelling has gone down a great deal, and I anticipate it will continue to do so. I haven't needed anything more than Tylenol and an occasional celebrex since week 2. I try to avoid NSAIDS but ev once in a while the celebrex helps with the swelling and is invaluable. I fell and broke the metatarsal in my left (non surgical) foot, so that is sore but not really a big deal. I have a carbide steel insert for my shoe which keeps the foot from bending, better than a boot. I dont know how quickly I will heal as I'm early in recovery. I've really slowed the PT, and they don't do half of what they'd like because I am following the guidelines on bonesmart. I cut down to 2x this week and next week I will go once a week for the remainder. Found a new therapy place near me that has a pool and thinking about switching to do some aqua therapy, I'm going to check it out, want to know what their PTs philosophy is before making a switch.
