TKR Coming along<<

I'm familiar with turmeric for other uses and actually have taken quire a bit of it for a year prior to surgery in attempt to reduce inflammation in the knee. It worked well on the arthritis in other areas of my body, including a little around the knee but knee was too far gone to effectively reduce pain in the joint. I just started on what will hopefully be a short course of Zoloft so will check with drug interactions before taking. Thanks again.

I'm 11 weeks post OP tommorow and recovery is slow. Still swollen and stiff but am walking without assistance, just quite slow and minimal pain.
@Elad1002 dont worry. Recovery will happen all of a sudden, you will hit a mark and it seems to accelerate. I remember being the slowest ever at walking an i mean really slow. ...then suddenly realised the other day i am at speed again of 18months pre-op. ....seems like it came from nowhere. I am nearly 5 months postop. It will happen ...that dreaded WORD....PATIENCE

@Kiwigirl62
Thanks for the words of encouragement. I appreciate the support, was hoping to go back to work by March. I'm not quite sure I can handle a 40 hour work week yet.
I am looking forward to leaving this stiffness and swelling behind, that's for sure. I can't remember the bone on bone pain but it sometime feels I've traded one for another.

Is there a point in recovery that you dont wake up stiff and swollen?

@Elad1002, how weird that you should ask this today! It's 640 am here and I just woke up a few minutes ago. I went to get coffee and as it was dripping I realized that I didn't feel quite as stiff. I looked down and for the first time my knee looked to be about the same as my other! How thrilling! And probably temporary, I know. But it's hopeful and I'll take it!

@Elad1002, eventually the morning stiffness goes away or at least less frequent. Even at 10 months, I occasionally have mornings where I notice a bit of stiffness which goes away quite quickly.

@grandma chris
I am having a lot less swelling over the past week. I'm also walking foot over foot upstairs but pain in knee when attempting to go downstairs, so I will wait on that one. Walking without aides even when shopping, I keep a cane in car, just incase. Morning stiffness still there, just wondering when that finally leaves. Glad you are doing well.
@NavyGunns
Glad to hear it. Patience is the name of this game. I started on an antidepressant with the goal.of weaning off in 6 months, I was getting a bit too anxious, this surgery really threw me for a loop. I have all my answers now, but initially wasnt well informed. I'm coming along though....thanks for your respone.

In January 2014 I had a hip replacement. I know that everyone says the knee is much harder to recover from but in my case, the hip replacement knocked me for a loop initially. It's not the same I know, but after my hip I was stiff when I stood up for a long time - more than six months I think. And I continued to use a cane for about the same amount of time. My scar was puckered at one end. All of these things are happening with my knee replacement but I feel that they all went away (and are completely unthought of now) eventually and will again.

@grandma chris
Thanks for posting that, it helps. I know this may sound weird but I was naive going into this surgery. I cant tell you how many times I said. Oh my God, why didnt I research this more. The answer is of course, I felt I was out of options. I decided it was the last thing I could do to feel better and other than a brief talk with the surgeon and talking with a few others who had it done, I knew very little. I would've done a few things differently had I known I had choices. I left everything up to my surgeon and asked few questions. And that is so unlike me in other areas of my life. I have had problems with anxiety in the past so it's no surprise I ended up having some post OP anxiety. I have been dealing with it, went on what will hopefully be a short course of Zoloft, and talking with a therapist. No one could prepare you for this recovery.
I'm also dealing with acceptance that I didnt research the surgery prior, wish I had known about this website. I'm going back to work sometime in March and I'm not sure how long I can be on my feet yet. So it's all a mystery for me to navigate, my surgeon just told me to let him.know when I'm ready...that doesnt help much.
I appreciate your care and concern!
Sounds like you are doing great!

@ebungalow
Hi, hope all is going well with your recovery. Just wanted to ask you how long( hours) you wear your compression thigh highs. Is there a minimum or max that is safe?

Hi @Elad1002!

I have two pair of the thigh-high, open-toe stockings, so I rotate through the 4 stockings and have been wearing one almost constantly. I don’t wear it to PT and OS appointments, but do otherwise wear one all day and all night, swapping in a clean one after showers.

Did you receive your tights? I’ll be interested to know if you think they’re comfortable and if you find they help with swelling.

I have all my answers now, but initially wasnt well informed.
I was so blessed to have joined Bonesmart 6 months before my tkr. I had just had a scope and the OS said I really needed a replacement. I started researching knee replacements and found this site. I had already had 10 knee surgeries and did no PT afterwards just taking care of myself, cats, house and yard. I was thrilled to find that this site agreed with what I had done all along. I knew it was for me. The no PT isn't for everyone, but neither is aggressive PT.

'm also dealing with acceptance that I didnt research the surgery prior, wish I had known about this website.
Don't beat yourself up over it. It's better late than never. At least you're here now and can benefit from all our members' experience.

I had found Bonesmart before my THR in January 2014. I followed the mantras then and so happy I did. So I knew where to come when it was time to do my knee. Thanks to the generosity of all the posters on here, I knew what to expect and what to be aware of. In retrospect it was quite funny to see the PTs face in the hospital when I told him very seriously "Don't touch me". He must have wondered what the heck!!! LOL

@ebungalow
I didnt realize you can wear them at night. In the hospital they told me not to wear compression stockings at night. I didnt recieve the tights yet but purchased a pair of thigh thighs at the local specialty pharmacy.

@Elad1002

It had literally never occurred to me that it might not be ok to wear a compression stocking as much as I’ve been wearing it!

The instructions from your medical team made me wonder.

A quick google search tells me it’s not harmful to wear them unless they don’t fit well, the person has neuropathy, skin issues, etc.

So, I don’t know. I’m going to continue doing what I’m doing. It’s really cold here right now so the extra layer is welcome too.
