Avascular Necrosis

An update on my situation. My MRI on the right hip also showed AVN and secondary arthritis. Consultant advised it too will need replacing within 2 / 3 years.
Helped make my mind up.
I will go through with the hip injection on my painful left hip on 13 October.
I have scheduled the left hip replacement for February 2016.
Once that's done and I'm up and about I will decide when to do the right hip.

@mald, welcome to the bilateral AVN club! Quite shocking, isn't it? Should/when I move forward with the first THR, I will have surgery in either January or February. I'll be very interested in knowing if the injection helps. Good luck on your journey!

Hello @mald - just wanted to chime in that although I do not have AVN, the OA in my right hip deteriorated rapidly, like you, and I'm an active person (sports, 3 little kids, etc.) like you, too. It's a little shocking how you can go from running down tennis balls, to having a hard time walking uphill even one block! For me it took months, not even a year. I do think you have to delay surgery for a period of time after you have the shot for some reason, and many doctors use the shot as a diagnostic thing rather than doing it in real hopes that is is a solution. I had a shot and it relieved the pain just for the duration of the anesthetic, then the pain came back, worse! (Sorry, I hope that doesn't deter you; just be ready for anything!). I'm wishing you well. I am 41 years old so not too much difference in age as you. If you have questions about anything let me know. I've been around and around and around (and then around again), researching options for me. My conclusion: RTHR on 11/3, and likely the left soon after (although I'm asking about bilateral at my pre-op). I wish you the best in your quest for a solution!

@sandiegomom many thanks for your comments. Yes the surgeon advised me that the injection might give 3 days or 3 months relief. Or non at all!! It won't cure anything though so ultimately a thr is on the agenda. I believe getting it done whilst I'm fit will be beneficial to my recovery.
Hope your thr goes well!!

Hi @mald
I had 3 cortizone injections in my left hip. They aren't that painful, Just a couple little stings and they are guided quickly and accurately with an ultra sound. They helped a little but for only a few weeks.

@CricketHip thanks for sharing your experience. Were you sedated? I've been offered it?

Update from me. Hip injection (left hip) today. Little discomfort and up and about quickly. Replacement booked for 9 Feb but may be brought forward to early Jan.

Hi @mald. Thought I would add my two cents worth. I was diagnosed with AVN in my left hip, following an MRI in April of this year. This was after I had a cortisone shot that offered zero relief and 4 weeks of PT, thinking it was bursitis, but the PT only worsened my problem. When I saw my MRI, I was shocked that I was still able to walk, albeit with a cane and on the very bad days, crutches. The MRI showed I was near collapse. Fast forward to today...
I am nearly 11 weeks post op and am now bowling and doing 100% of what I used to do, before my hip started giving me problems. I truly believe finding the right surgeon makes all the difference in the world. Best of luck to you.

Well done on getting that date for your THR @mald ! Hope that injection gives you some relief.

This might sound strange but I've had really bad hiccups and indigestion since my hip injection on Tuesday - is there a link? It's very strange.

It could be, but I'm no medical person. Are you on any other new medication? If not, I'd give your DR a call, just to ease your mind. I got horrific heartburn from tramadol, within 20 minutes of taking it.

I would agree with Nana - are you on any new medication or have you increased your meds at all?

They are questioning whether I have I have this. How did they diagnose it?They did an X-ray but that's it.I go to the Doc in Dec. and am going to ask for an x-Ray of both hip and my left knee as everything feels like it's getting worse and I literally can't do a thing about surgery until May

@healer1 hi initially my AVN was found in X-ray however for it to show at X-ray it's already progressed too far to 'repair' and THR the only real option.
Following diagnosis I had MRI on both hips that confirmed the extent of the AVN.
I've since had steroid injection to left hip which gave a couple of weeks relief only. My THR is on 9 February.

@Cynthia777 hi, the injection gave me 2 weeks relief at best so I'm back to my old hobbling self!! Roll on Feb 9 when the left hip goes!!

Unfortunately we see a lot of this. But at least now you know you are heading in the right direction! Hope time flies for you!

@Healer01
My AVN barely showed up on the X-rays. My OS ordered an MRI to confirm his suspicions. From what I understand, the MRI is the go-to step, for diagnosis of AVN, unless, of course, the AVN is so progressed, it is apparent on X-rays.

I had a meeting with my consultant yesterday. He advised that predominantly due to my age he wants to do a Birmingham Hip Replacement. I understand this means he removes less bone meaning when this replacement has run its course a Total Hip Replacement is still possible. Has anybody been through this? I understand it's a more specialist surgery?
