TKR Arrangrls RKR Journey

when my mom was on hospice at home they had us place a rolled towel under her ankles so her heels were raised a bit.

Thanks might give this a go but not so bad today x

Evening everyone

I have read the fantastic articles and they are helpful . One that has struck a cord with me , is the tears I have cried. I can feel all right , 5 minutes later I’m sitting with tears running down my face … it’s a horrible feeling . Of those of you who have experienced this, does it last for long? Did you notice your mood lifting ?
Thank you all .. what a fab wee community this is

I was still having occasional emotional issues 5 months post op.

When I had my first TKR in 2016, I had severe depression for probably 3 months, until I was able to get the pain more under control and to finally get off the opioids! It turns out I’m super sensitive to them, they don’t relieve pain for me and they trigger depression, so it was NOT fun! I found this group about 8-10 weeks in and was so relieved to discover it wasn’t just my failure!

This time, for my right TKR in April, I told the docs no opioids AND they said they’ve gotten away from them anyway! They instead had me use Tramadol and Tylenol, which dealt with most of the pain just fine, and didn’t cause the depression at all.

For many of us, the vulnerability and dealing with pain that accompanies this surgery, possibly also dealing with unsympathetic PT or docs, could easily make it very hard to not feel depressed!

I think you’ll find that quite a few of us have to decide how to manage the emotional component, male or female, youthful or mature, and you are speaking to sympathetic ears here!

Sending you a warm virtual hug Jan. It would be lovely if we could all get together for a little tea party, because no one can understand this long recovery if they have not had this surgery.

Have you explored the social forum threads here at bonesmart?

Oh the tears !!!!I can have fantastic meltdowns over things that wouldn’t have made me bat an eyelid before my Op. I’m 10 weeks post op since yesterday and it still catches me off guard from time to time. Last week I had a belter of a row with a delivery guy(he was at the wrong house but argued with me over not answering my phone)any way I’m am the most passive person ever and even if I was raging I’d rarely row but in one of my more emotional moments I took this guy on and argued with him vehemently. Took my self back into my house and promptly broke down bawling crying leaving my husband and kids all looking at me like I was very strange indeed :heehee: Nobody said anything for fear I’d get worse until I composed myself. And five minutes later for the life of me I couldn’t tell you what I actually got upset over:shrug:

so the emotions definitely run high but I haven’t fought with anyone since so I must be improving

as for shoes I wear eccos or ASICS trainers, however it’s still one of the hardest jobs I do in the day putting on that right shoe !!!! I generally don’t take it off till bedtime if I can manageit so I don’t have to put it on twice in the one day

:dancy:
@Arrangrl I'm only across the pond from you in Ireland !!

sounds like a reasonable goal.

when I had a stress fracture in my foot years ago, the doctor said to increase distance by no more than 5% per week. he said many middle aged stress fractures in the spring are due to people doing too much too soon when the weather warms up.

I wonder if for us a good goal is to add a second 5 minute walk later in the day. there should be multiple rest periods during the day.

I got my old Fitbit working again. by not taking my walker downstairs the simple act of making breakfast and taking it to my easy chair in the living room took 500 steps because with a cane I had to carry everything individually instead of putting it on the walker tray. I ice wrapped while enjoying my coffee and porridge as morning light flowed into the woods. I was able to glimpse a doe and two fawns moving in the woods across the road. they crossed to our side but went onto a neighbor's property.

Hi

I do exactly the same as you , I’m walking downstairs with one stick as, I need my other hand to carry lunch, coffee etc. I then elevate and ice . I’m also drinking plenty of good old water
Your morning view sounds idyllic ❤️
